Chapter 10

A little hesitant, Oz managed to get his words out.

In a deep and calm voice that would melt into the quietness of the night.

Oz: Not all children receive unconditional love from their parents.

But you were truly loved.

Not for the power to grant wishes, but because you had people who loved you for you by your side.

If there is a next life for you, I hope that you will be cherished the same.

That is my wish.

Akira: (Oz…)

Oz’s wish was filled with his blessing.

It was a wish not for his personal gain, but for happiness.

What could you call that, if not love?

Sif let off a strong light, as if to answer his wish.

A light unlike before, that bathed the whole area in white.

I had to shut my eyes at the brightness, and heard Sif’s laughing voice.

When I opened them, the quiet of the night stretched out before us again, and in Oz’s palm were two gemstones.

Oz: These are…

Arthur: …Beautiful gemstones. They look like ruby and sapphire.

Akira: A red gem, and a blue one…

I recognized those colours. The vibrant morning sun, and the cloudless vast sky of day.

Akira: Uhm…could these colours be…

Owen: Your eyes?

Arthur: Me and Lord Oz’s?

Shylock: Yes. It’s not just the colours, but that strong glint they carry within them is also like your eyes.

Bradley: Wow. That fairy has good sense in their gifts.

Mithra: You think so? If I was getting a rock, a mana stone would make me ten times happier.

Mitile: But Lord Oz’s wish was that in their next life they would be loved as well. So why these gems…

Shylock: Perhaps we can think of these gemstones as Sif’s new life.

Murr: Yup! Sif used their life to become these gems for Oz.

They couldn’t escape their fate, so they turned those eyes that loved them so dearly into similar coloured gems.

This way they can still be by your sides!

To be by the side of those who loved you.

Bathed in moonlight, the red and blue gemstones sparkled bright. A warmth spread from my chest.

Even if one day, Oz and Arthur had to part from each other…

They can look at these gemstones and remember.

Of the eyes that loved them so.

Oz: Arthur.

This gem is for you.

The gemstone he was handing over was the red one.

Arthur: …Huh…

Puzzled, Arthur stared at the red gemstone he was being offered, and the blue one in Oz’s hand, as if comparing the two.

Arthur: …You’re giving me the gemstone that has the colour of your eyes…?

Oz: Mine…? …Ah, that’s right.

That’s why I wanted to give it to you.

Arthur: …Lord Oz…

Thank you, so much…

Like he was handling his heart, Arthur accepted the gemstone delicately with both hands, wrapping them gently.

The sight of him clasping his hands together at his chest resembled a person praying.

Arthur: Lord Oz. I am grateful to have met Sif.

Even if I can’t ever meet them again…

I am proud of the love I gave them.

Oz: …Is that so.

He stared at the dazzling blue gemstone in his hand.

The night wind brushed his cheek, and swayed his long hair.

Oz: In the future, you will experience many meetings and farewells.

Within them, there will be those who you grow affection for, just like this one.

Those affections become bonds. They grow stronger little by little, and before you know it, have made a place in your heart.

However, the day to part will eventually come.

His grasp on the gemstone in his hand tightened.

Like he didn’t want to lose a single fragment of that pure light.

Arthur: …Yes. But until then, I will appreciate every irreplaceable bond I make.

Which is why I will not shy away from giving my love to others.

I want to give my all to those that I care for.

Even if the day we have to part comes…

Because if I didn’t, I know I’d regret it.

His smile was peaceful, yet resolute.

He then looked at Oz with piercing eyes.

Oz: …Even if that loss becomes unbearable?

Arthur: Even if.

Although such precious bonds may be few and far between in a lifetime’s worth of meetings…

I have already had one meeting that I will treasure.

I am fortunate, Lord Oz. So I will be fine.

Arthur’s hand wrapped around Oz’s fist that protected the blue gem and its light within.

Arthur: Lord Oz, I will become stronger.

I don’t want to just share my happiness with you, I want to shoulder your pain too. So…

It doesn’t have to be now. But I ask that one day you will rely on me instead of protect me.

Oz:

His expression was like the moonlight. Quiet, kind, obscure, tinged with complex colours.

Moonlight. It was not only the moon’s light, but the shadows created by the light as well.

Oz: …Arthur…

In place of an answer, a large hand ruffled silver hair.

Arthur’s eyebrows drooped and gently smiled, as if accepting that this was enough for now.

Owen: Poor pitiful Prince, for having believed in the cold-hearted Demon Lord.

Hey Arthur. Call me when you don’t need that stone anymore.

I’ll crush it into pieces for you. I bet it’ll feel refreshing like if I squashed Oz’s eyeball itself.

Bradley: What a waste. That’s a good quality gemstone. If you’re gonna break it into pieces might as well sell ‘em all.

Arthur: I won’t be breaking or selling it. This is my treasure.

Oh, Lord Oz. How about we get these gemstones turned into accessories?

They’re perfect as they are now of course, but it would be great if we could pin them to our clothes.

Oz: That’s a nice idea.

Murr: Then you can leave the cutting to me! I’ll make it extra sparkly!

Shylock: How about you ask Chloe for the decoration part? I believe he will be able to make you two a beautiful accessory fitting of a memento.

And when they’re done you can put them on and come to my bar.

Then I will be able to give my adorable and mischievous young master that special drink they deserve.

Mithra: Haaaugh…what am I to do now that my time killer has gone.

Mitile: Time killer…there’s gotta be a better nickname for someone who was so attached to you.

Mithra: Time killers are time killers. Everyone’s asleep at night, so taking care of that fairy was a perfect fit for me.

Mitile: Mister Mithra. Lately you were always playing with Sif.

Then…how about we keep you company next time.

Mithra: You brothers?

Mitile: Yes! Lately the first floor’s been really quiet, so me, my brother, and Riquet felt it was a bit lonely.

Mithra: But you guys will just fall asleep in the middle of it.

Well, why not. Then next time I will be hanging out with you guys.

When I looked up at the sky, millions of stars were shining.

Twinkle twinkle, like gemstones do.

And in the middle of them, was a giant moon.

A moon that invades once a year, the Great Calamity that seeks to destory this world.

Farewells aren’t that far from us now.

Akira: (We’re all coming together, to defeat that moon.)

(And when that day comes…)

Oz:

Shylock: Now, shall we return to the manor?

Oz: Yeah. –Sage.

Oz held out his hand to me.

Oz: With you by my side, I can overcome the night.

His strong voice echoed as if to tell all the other wizards here.

To tell that moon shining blue, floating behind his back.

If you’re here, everything’s okay. If I’m here, everything’s okay.

I put my hand on his, accepting his trust.

Akira: Yes!

Though our individual wishes may differ, we all had one mission.

Once we’ve gathered and fought together, we’ll probably say our goodbyes to each other.

And, hopefully…

Those farewells will be bright, kind, and warm.

END

Chapter 9

Arthur: That’s inevitable. Not only me, but for everyone else too. I’m sure it’s the same for you as well.

…Is that why you always brought someone with me when I came here?

So that I wouldn’t become their parent?

Oz:

Arthur: You really are kind, Lord Oz.

Oz: …This is not kindness.

Arthur: Lord Oz. Could you take Sif please?

Oz: Sure. Come here.

Arthur: …Hehe.

Oz: Arthur?

Arthur: Pardon me. It fills my heart with joy to see you holding Sif.

I was only four when you took me in.

I’m sure I was the same height as Sif at that age.

Oz: …Yeah.

You were a bit taller though. Everything else is the same.

Arthur:

Spending time with Sif made me think about you and the days we spent together.

The day you picked me up. The days you taught me magic, or played with me.

And the day we parted…

Oz:

Arthur: I also hoped that you were having the same thoughts as I was…

Oz:

…Arthur, I also–

Oz & Arthur: …!

Arthur: Sif’s body is lighting up…is this…

Oz: …The time for farewell is fast approaching.

Arthur. Gather everyone.

Arthur: …n, Understood.

Oz:

Young fairy. No one can change your will.

However, if I may ask…

Called by Arthur, we returned to Sif right away.

Sif was in Oz’s arms. Seeing their body overflowing with a bright light, we understood what was happening.

Akira: It’s time to say goodbye…

Oz: If you wish to say something, the time is now.

When they noticed us, Sif got down from Oz. They had a happy smile on their face as they came towards us.

My eyes almost teared up seeing their arms reach out.

Mitile: Sif…

I had a lot of fun spending time with you. Thank you for being friends with me.

Akira: Being with you…seeing everyone with you, always filled my heart with warmth.

Thank you for such a wonderful time.

Bradley: One Year’s Meat, make sure to choose me as your pops.

Owen: It’s One Year’s Candy. Don’t get it wrong.

Shylock: Hmhm, my adorable and mischievous young master. Your hair is a mess again.

Shylock’s gentle hands tied up Sif’s hair.

Even without words, I could tell that he cared for Sif from the love that flowed from his fingers.

Murr inserted a single flower as the finish.

Murr: Bye bye, Sif! Have a safe journey!

Mithra: That was sooner than expected.

…Ah, right.

Like he just remembered something, he peered into Sif’s face.

Then, he used his finger to stretch his mouth wide.

Sif: Kyakya!

Mithra: Haha, you laughed.

Looks like I do have a knack for child rearing.

Oz and Arthur were silently watching everyone saying their goodbyes.

Before I knew it, the moon had risen high in the sky. Beneath it, red eyes reflected blue ones within.

Oz: Arthur. You know what happens next, don’t you?

Arthur: Yes. I am prepared.

Of course, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going to be sad…

But I will be alright.

I must accept their destiny if I want to celebrate their birth as we send them off.

And Owen…thank you for telling me about this child.

Owen: Ugh, boring.

Arthur smiled at Owen’s words, and then looked straight into Oz’s eyes.

Arthur: I hope that I can give them a proper farewell, so as to not leave any regrets.

Those blue eyes of his were clearer than ever.

Though his heart may ache, there was a serene light in his eyes much like the clear blue sky.

Oz: A farewell, with no regrets…

In contrast, Oz’s red eyes slightly wavered.

Hope and denial blended in the lights and shadows of those sharp vibrant reds.

As he watched Arthur hold Sif and give his words of parting and thanks, Oz didn’t move an inch.

Akira: Oz, if there’s something you wish to say to Sif…

Oz: Then, one thing…

He walked towards Sif.

He stood by their side, watching over them for a moment, and slowly opened his mouth.

Oz: Sif. Arthur is fortunate to have met you.

In a blink, Sif’s body glowed brightly.

Light enveloped their body even further. When I looked again, I could hardly make out their shape anymore.

And then, Sif flew high into the sky where the moon was sitting.

They rose upwards in a straight line, and suddenly dropped downwards.

Watching them repeat the same movements, it was then that I realized.

Akira: Wait, could this be…

Arthur: The game I taught them…?

Sif returned, retying their hair by themself.

With soft and gentle movements.

After that, they stuck a finger to the corner of their mouth, and dragged it into a smile.

Mitile: Ahaha. It’s Mister Mithra.

They ruffled their hair into a mess, imitated when they were being read a book, jumped like when they were doing upsies.

All of these scenes were familiar.

Shylock: It looks like they’re going over the activities we’ve done with them.

It was like they were reminiscing over the love we gave them.

When they finished, Sif looked around at all of us.

Bradley: Oho. They’re having trouble on who to choose as their papa.

Owen: What if they can’t choose, and end up dying without picking anybody.

Murr: Hey, Sif. Who do you think gave you the most love out of everyone here?

With a light step, they glided towards Arthur.

Arthur: …!

Oz:

Kindly, happily, Sif ran circles around Arthur.

Mithra, Owen, & Bradley:

Shylock, Mitile, & Murr:

Oz & Akira:

Until they stopped, and flew elsewhere.

Mitile & Akira: Wha…

With a quicker pace, they were headed towards–

Oz: …nh.

The chest of the one who was silently watching over this moment.

Oz:

Mithra, Owen, & Bradley:

Sif: Kyahaha…!

Sif laughed as if saying he was their parent. Tiny arms wrapped Oz into a tight hug.

Mithra: Huh?

Bradley: Why Oz?

Owen: Are you crazy? Is this a mistake somehow?

Surprise won over objection, and the Northern wizards stared in shock.

Shylock however looked to be enjoying this.

Shylock: My, how unfortunate for me. I still had a wonderful time these past several days though.

Small young beings are so fleeting and precious.

Yet at times they can also see through to one’s true nature.

Oz himself was surprised.

Taken aback, he stared at the fairy in his arms.

Oz: Why…

Arthur walked to his side, and looked up at Oz.

Clear blue eyes like the sky reflected eyes of the morning sun, and gently smiled.

The sunlight of the blue skies, the morning light of daybreak…

Neither of those compared to the dazzling light of the memories flashing in his mind.

Arthur: Because the love I gave this child was the love you gave me.

I think Sif knew that too.

Oz: …gh…

The world’s strongest wizard, who has lived for an overwhelming amount of time. Even he could lose his words.

To one young seventeen-year-old.

Arthur:

Oz:

Urged by Arthur’s smile, Oz cast his eyes down on Sif again, still in his arms.

Slightly, but surely, those eyes of his wavered.

Arthur: Now, Lord Oz. Your wish.

Oz:

I…

Chapter 8

Akira: We’ll be over there, so I’ll leave Sif with you and Oz.

…While we’re gone, I hope you can have a nice long talk.

Arthur: Master Sage…

…Yes. Thank you very much.

When I look at Oz, he gives me a single nod.

I prayed that their chat would go well, and left with the others.

Shylock: Now, I believe you two have already been informed by Oz.

Mitile: Yes. When a siofra grants a wish, it disappears.

It’s sad but…I feel that’s why we must stay by their side.

Akira: I think so too, Mitile. Before the time comes…we should spend every precious moment we can together.

Bradley: Heh. Those’re some cool expressions you’re puttin’ on, kiddos.

I thought you two would be sobbing messes, but you’re actually keepin’ it together.

Shylock: Yes, but please don’t push yourselves. There is no reason to hide away your feelings.

Mitile & Akira: Thank you…

Murr: So, what babysitting tricks you got, Mithra?

Mithra: I have a variety, but this one made them the happiest.

Akira: !?

Suddenly, Mithra grabbed me by the nape of my neck and lifted me up.

He then mercilessly launched me at the sky.

Akira: Aaaaaaaaah!!

I shot upwards, until gravity took my body back.

Screaming out of fear of falling, Mithra’s expression remained unchanged as he caught me like I was luggage.

Akira: Ow…!?

Bradley: Your throw is sloppy, as is your catch.

Owen: Wow, you didn’t even cast a protection spell.

Mitile: That’s dangerous! What if you didn’t catch the Master Sage!?

Mithra: Shut it, that wouldn’t happen.

Master Sage, that was fun, right?

Akira: F-For thrillseekers, maybe…uhm, could you let me down now…

Mithra: Satisfied already? I could curve my throw a bit, and make you somersault if you’d like.

Akira: No thank you, I’m okay!

Mithra: Haah, if you’re sure. You don’t have to hesitate.

Akira: Hah, I’m saved…

Murr: Your babysitting style is wild~!

Hey Mithra, will you play with the dolls now?

Mithra: Dolls?

Murr: Mmhmm. The ones on top of that bench.

Akira: Ah, those are…

Akira: Huh. There’s toys on this chair…they’re dolls made of wood. Did we bring something like this?

Oz: Those were here before. They were likely used by the former residents of this village.

Akira: Makes sense. Maybe the church was looking after children?

Murr: The dolls the humans who once lived here used to play with the siofra.

Mitile: Wait, really? How do you…

Murr: It piqued my interest, so I examined them and took them apart, to find a letter in one of them!

The paper’s pretty old and hard to read though.

He said, and with his other hand took out a crumpled old letter.

Murr: “To whomever is reading this.”

“I hide this letter in the Siofra’s beloved doll, for their divine protection should keep it safe…”

“I write this letter in hopes that someone will find it.”

“This village since ancient times has lived on the blessings granted by the Siofra, whom we give all our love to.”

“Unfortunately, the wicked outsiders have found out about them.”

“They invade our village left and right, and steal the Siofra from us by force.”

“If you are reading this. Please, save the Siofra.”

“Before their lives are extinguished by greed.”

Mitile & Akira: Ah…

Bradley & Owen: What?

Surprisingly, it was Bradley and Owen who spoke up.

Owen: Did you know? And that’s why you told the story?

Bradley: No way I knew. I just guessed right.

Still…

His words stopped there, and he nabbed the doll from Murr’s hand.

He immediately fiddled with the doll’s hands, and then pinched my cheek with them.

Akira: Owowowow…!?

Bradley: There’s no reason for you to be so down in the dumps now.

‘Cuz you’re gonna use those hands that cared for the siofra to send them off with a proper goodbye.

Akira: Bradley…

Murr: Ahaha! You’re good at playing with dolls, Bradley!

Mithra: Hey, I’m supposed to be teaching right now.

Bradley: Yeah yeah. Sorry for stealing your human siofra.

Mithra: Playing with dolls is for amateurs.

Instead…

He spread his hand on top of my head.

And in the next moment, put strength in his fingers and roughly began scrubbing my head.

Akira: Wa, woah, Mithra…! My hair…I’m, getting dizzy…!

Mithra: You don’t need dolls to have fun like this.

Owen: Oh no, the Master Sage’s head is going to rip off.

Murr: Your eyes are spinning, Master Sage!

Shylock: Since neither of us would ever play with Sif like this, they must have taken it as a novel experience.

It is a bit unrefined, but perhaps they saw it as Mithra’s way of showing affection.

Mithra: Affection? But I don’t have any of that.

Shylock: How about you try remembering a time when your heart was moved by someone else’s actions?

Maybe you will understand why Sif enjoys playing with you then.

Mithra: Like I said, there’s no affection…

Mitile: …What about my mother?

Mithra: Huh?

Mitile: How did you feel about Mother? You met her when you were a child, and learned magic from her, right?

Mithra: Tiletta, hm…

For her, I guess it’s this.

He took a finger and stuck it in the corner of his mouth.

Then he pulled to make a smile as if saying ‘cheese’.

Mithra: She wuld offen laff wiff a big mauth juss like dis…

Bradley: What wuzzat?

Akira: “She would often laugh with a big mouth just like this”…I think?

Murr: Hahaha! That’s funny, Mithra!

Mitile: M-Mother would really laugh like that?

Shylock: Her hearty laugh must’ve left an impression on him. She was a bright, extravagant, and beautiful witch after all.

I’m guessing that’s how you saw her too, Mithra.

Mithra: Really?

Mitile: Mother’s smile…wide open…

He timidly brought his fingers to the corners of his mouth and tried tugging them.

Mithra: You need to pull more. Like this.

Mitile: Awie!

Owen: Haha. Your mouth’s stretching sideways, sooo weird.

Bradley: Oh, the baby’s learning how to look after babies too?

Mitile: Hey, I’m not that little!

Though it was night, the mood was warm.

A sad farewell was coming soon, yet everything felt so at peace. My chest tightened.

I looked to the night sky to try and distract myself, and thought of those two.

Akira: (I hope they’re doing okay…)

(I wonder what they’re talking about now.)

Oz:

Arthur:

Oz: (The Sage said to talk until I felt okay…)

Arthur: (But the words just won’t come out…)

Oz & Arthur: (...Hm?)

Sif:

Pinch pinch.

Arthur: Lord Oz, Sif wants you to hold them.

Oz: Ah…no.

You should hold them.

Arthur: Hmhm…how about we take turns. Come, Sif.

Sif: Kyakya!

Oz & Arthur:

Arthur: Lord Oz. About all this…thank you for trying not to hurt my feelings.

Know that your kindness warms my heart.

Please let me apologize however, for making it sound like I was blaming you earlier.

Oz: You have nothing to apologize for.

Taking your feelings into consideration, it’s what I deserve.

I should have told you things sooner.

Arthur: Lord Oz…

Oz: Everyday I see how you’ve grown. It’s not that I don’t trust in you.

It’s just…

Arthur:

Oz: If someone you love dies for you, you would be heartbroken.

Arthur: That’s…

Chapter 7

Oz dropped his hand like it lost all strength, and I scooped it up with both of my hands.

Akira: You haven’t lost your chance yet.

Let’s go see Arthur. You can talk until you feel okay.

You won’t be able to understand the things you should if you don’t exchange words.

I felt that if I didn’t hold onto his hand tight enough, it would slip away.

It was like he had no energy. Or maybe he didn’t care. Maybe he doesn’t need anyone’s hand.

I don’t know the truth, but I press my fingers hard.

Akira: It’s what you and I…and everyone at this manor have been doing.

I know you’ll be fine. Your words are always straightforward and sincere…

And Arthur is a strong person! He will understand!

Oz:

Oz didn’t try to brush my hands away.

He didn’t hold them back, but he did stare silently at our joined hands.

As if something was there.

Oz: …Mitile. You’re there, aren’t you.

He looked at the door and spoke. After a hesitant sounding knock, Mitile poked his face in.

Mitile: I’m sorry…I finished getting ready, so I went to meet the Master Sage, and then heard your conversation…

Oz: It’s fine. I wanted to tell you too.

Mitile:

His gaze drifted elsewhere, searching for the right words. He then raised his face, a little nervous.

Mitile: We have to say goodbye, forever.

Fresh green grass eyes wavered with sorrow.

It wasn’t just Arthur. Mitile also loved Sif a lot.

Mitile: …We got along so well. It’s so heartbreaking to say goodbye.

It doesn’t matter how much you try to steel yourself. It’s still depressing, and lonely.

Akira: Mitile…

Mitile: But that’s all the more reason why we should say goodbye together.

I want Sif to be surrounded by everyone who loves them, and hear our thank yous and farewells.

When I saw Mitile look straight into Oz’s eyes, I instinctively reached for Sakitty.

If we could. If we could tell them something before we parted. Because this must happen.

I don’t want any of us to feel like this anymore. With that wish in my heart I also turn to look at Oz.

Akira: Oz. Let’s go to Arthur.

Oz:

Yes. You’re right.

He nodded, and looked out the window.

The steadily changing sky had become painted in navy blue.

Night was coming.

Mithra: Arthim.

That’s another time today I took you somewhere with my door. Be grateful to my magic.

Bradley: Hell no! Damnit, just when I bumped into you in the hallway ya had to drag me here too.

I thought you got bored of babysittin’.

Mithra: I need to kill time. For the past sleepless week my only friend at night has been that fairy.

Owen: Oh, you guys came too?

Mithra: Owen.

Bradley: You’re here too.

Owen: Mithra, get your door out. I want to go home.

Bradley: Huh? Why’d you come?

Owen: Giving out spoilers. I told the Prince the cold hard truth.

Bradley: He didn’t know?

No one told him, huh. Not Oz, Shylock, or Murr.

Owen: Yup. It wasn’t just the Prince, but Mitile and the Master Sage didn’t know either.

The guy no one believes in, the guy who watches the Demon Lord’s mood, and the guy who finds hiding the truth entertaining–they’re all worthless old coots.

That man’s always stopping me from saying mean things to the children, yet here he goes being the bigger bully.

That fairy dies when it grants a wish. It’s so cruel of him to hide such a sad truth like that.

Mithra: Wait, that fairy’s going to die?

Owen: You didn’t know?

Bradley: No way.

Mithra: Now that you mention it, I think I remember something like that…well, whatever.

Anyways Owen. It’s rather rude of you to go home now. Let’s chat for a bit.

The siofra can’t speak, so killing time with them left me unsatisfied.

Owen: Hah? Don’t wanna.

Mithra: Oh come on.

Owen: Hey, let go!

Bradley: Give it up. That’s how he got me too.

Owen: Tch.

Mithra: Ah, you’re here. So you were playing with Arthur and Shylock.

Arthur: Mithra, Bradley. You guys came.

Shylock: And Owen. You’ve returned.

Owen: By force ‘cuz of this guy.

Mithra: Siofra.

Sif: !

Bradley: Oh, running up to Mithra right when you see him.

Mithra: Of course. They love me.

Good evening, have you been well?

Sif: Kyakya!

Owen: You’re making a mess of their hair again.

Arthur: You’re very unrestrained in your head patting, Mithra.

Oz: Vox Nox.

Arthur: …!

Bradley: Oz’s here too, along with the Sage and the Southern Shrimp.

Mitile: Good evening. Wow, everyone’s gathered!

Akira: Arthur, sorry we’re late. And Shylock, we’ve kept you waiting.

Arthur: No problem. You were on a mission after all, so don’t let it bother you.

Shylock: Did you complete your report in the Sage’s journal?

Akira: Yes, fortunately.

Arthur: Lord Oz, thank you for bringing the Master Sage.

Oz: …Yeah.

Oz & Arthur:

Arthur didn’t look any different in my eyes, despite having learned the truth about Sif from Owen.

Akira: (It’s best if we let those two have a long and private talk…how do I do that…)

Sif: Kyahaha!

Mithra: Hey, no grabbing my cloak. You’ll stretch it out.

Mitile: Wow. Sif is so attached to you…when did you have the time to become friends?

Mithra: We played together night after night. Obviously.

It’s quite easy being the playmate for a child. Should I give you some tips?

Mitile: Uhh? You…?

Akira: (Woah…! Isn’t this my chance!?)

Mithra!!

Mithra: Oh, you startled me. Please don’t shout so loudly all of a sudden.

Akira: P-Pardon me. I just really wanted to hear those babysitting tips of yours.

Shall we talk over there?

Mithra: Huuuh…? Well, I don’t mind teaching you.

Akira: Yay. Thanks a lot, Mithra!

…So while we’re doing that, how about we leave Sif with Oz and Arthur?

Oz & Arthur:

Mitile: ! I, I want you to teach me too, Mister Mithra! Let’s hurry on over there…!

Bradley: ? What’s gotten into you two?

Owen: Did you plan something in secret behind our backs?

Akira & Mitile: Uhm, erm…

Mithra: Actually, why aren’t we taking the siofra with us? I’m supposed to be giving you tips on how to play with them.

Akira: Urk…! That’s…

Shylock: They want you to dote on them, Mithra.

They don’t want to see you dote on Sif as an example, they want to experience it for themselves. Right, Mitile?

Akira: (Shylock…!)

Mitile: Uh? …Y-Yeah! That’s right!

Akira: Please, Mithra! So let’s go over there!

Mithra: Okay, I guess. So you and Mitile are going to be the siofra.

Akira & Mitile: Yessir!

Bradley & Owen:

Bradley: If that’s what you’re doing, we don’t need to be here.

Owen: Yeah. Let’s go home.

Mithra: Where do you think you’re going? You’re coming with us.

Bradley: Damnit!

Owen: You’re the worst.

Sakitty sniffed at the air. When I followed where they were sniffing, I saw a light coming towards us like a shooting star.

Murr: Landing–!

Akira: Murr!

Shylock: Oh, you came by broom.

Murr: Mmhmm! The moon and I just couldn’t say goodbye to each other!

Hey Mithra, why d’ya got Owen and Bradley in your arms like that? A new kinda game?

Mithra: I’m going to showcase my babysitting skills to the two of them. Do you want to see as well?

Murr: What the heck, sounds fun! I’m in, I’m in–!

It became lively once Murr came. Slipping past the others, I took Sif to Oz and Arthur.

Akira: Arthur.

Chapter 6

Arthur: …Lord Oz…and Shylock…

Owen: Party poopers. You’re already back.

Shylock: Owen. So you came as well.

Owen: Yup. But I’ll be leaving now. I’ve finished what I came for.

Bye bye, little Prince. Enjoy what time you have left.

Shylock & Oz:

Shylock: …Prince Arthur. Has Owen told you something?

Arthur:

This child…will soon lose their life, for us…

Shylock:

Oz: Arthur…

Arthur: …Lord Oz, I am no longer that little child you knew who is so easily moved to tears.

I have the capability to accept this child’s fate and say goodbye.

…No, not just this child. No matter what fate has in store…

Oz:

…Arthur…

Arthur: Lord Oz. Your ‘Arthur’ is growing up faster than you think.

You don’t realize it, so to you I’m still that young and inexperienced Arthur…

To stay silent about this, knowing that I’ll only ever be someone you have to protect,

…makes me feel lonely.

Oz: …No. I…

I……

Arthur:

…My apologies. I need to cool my head.

Sif. I’m sorry, but I’m going to take a walk.

Shylock: Prince Arthur…

Oz:

Shylock: Please wait, Prince Arthur.

Arthur: Shylock…

Shylock: I’m terribly sorry, for keeping this from you.

Arthur: Please don’t apologize. Lord Oz made you keep quiet.

Shylock: …I felt that prolonging the news was wrong, but I still waited on Lord Oz to tell you himself.

I should have told you sooner.

In the end, trying to keep you away from the terrible truth has only resulted in hurting you more.

Arthur: …Thank you. I made you worry for me.

Sif…or the siofra. Are their deaths inevitable?

It saddens me, but I must accept it.

Shylock: Yes. I know you have that strength in you.

Lord Oz is aware of this as well. However…

Arthur:

It’s not just this time. There’s going to be more like this, meetings, and farewells…

Happiness, sadness, all of it. I want to share them with Lord Oz.

But…I don’t think he wants that.

Shylock:

Arthur: I wonder if from now on, I’ll be the only one left in the dark…

Shylock: In this entire world, you are the one person who knows him best.

And Lord Oz loves you.

Arthur: Shylock…

Shylock: Perhaps now is the time you should tell him how you feel, and open his heart using yours.

Arthur: Me, open his heart…?

Shylock: Indeed. Even I have clashed and soured relations with an old friend, many times.

Again and again, I’d say I’d cut ties with them after a fight.

But we’d still remain friends as if nothing happened. …Do you know why?

Arthur: Because one of you would compromise?

Shylock: Nope. They were so persistent that I’d run out of patience.

Arthur: That’s surprising…I see you as so strong-willed, so it’s hard to imagine you giving in to someone else.

Perhaps that’s why they call this old friend of yours…one of the greatest minds in history.

Shylock: …It is of great annoyance, but that person does know every inch about me.

What I’m attracted to, disgusted, scared, stimulated by, what moves my heart.

That’s why I always end up forgiving him.

Arthur:

Shylock: Your bond with Lord Oz is nothing erratic like ours.

Especially Lord Oz, stern as he is, he hides a pure heart much like the snowfields of North.

And no one is more fond of that view than you.

So please, do not fear. All will be fine.

Arthur:

I…I don’t know if I can open his heart without offending or hurting him though…

Shylock: I know you can. This is something that only you can do.

Arthur: Heh…I hope that’s true.

Then I will try telling him my feelings. And hear his words out without running away.

We’ll keep talking until we understand each other…

Shylock: Yes, that will do. Shall we return to Sif then?

Arthur: Yeah, let’s. Thanks, Shylock.

I’m still sad we have to say goodbye though…

Losing your life in exchange for granting a wish…

Shylock:

By the time I finished writing in the Sage’s journal, the sun was nearly setting.

Akira: (It’s gotten late. I wonder if Oz has returned yet.)

I left my room, and was headed for Mitile’s room when on my shoulder Sakitty turned its head, sensing someone.

Oz: Sage.

Akira: Ah, Oz. Come to pick us up?

Great timing. I just finished what I needed to do–

Oz:

Akira: Oz?

What’s wrong? You seem…

Oz: It’s nothing.

Akira: But…

It didn’t look like nothing.

I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I could somehow tell on that usually emotionless face of his that he was unhappy about something.

Akira: (What happened? Does it have to do with Arthur…?)

Oz:

Akira: Uhm…Oz. Would you like to talk with me in my room…?

I opened the door that I just closed, and invited Oz into my room.

Face to face with an Oz who won’t meet my eyes, I honestly tell him what’s been on my mind.

Akira: Did something happen at the church ruins?

Oz:

He stayed silent, neither confirming or denying.

His eyebrows crinkled, and after a long pause, his lips finally moved.

Oz: There is something I must tell you.

Akira: Of course. What is it?

Oz: It is about that fairy.

They can grant a wish for the one they acknowledge as their parent.

However, there is a price for that.

Their own life.

I swallowed my breath at the unexpected revelation.

And thought of the person who was the most attached to Sif.

Akira: Arthur…is he aware of this?

Oz: He just found out. From Owen.

The siofra live life with their fates set in stone. Of course, even they are aware of it themselves.

There is nothing we can do about it.

He stopped his words there. His face slightly darkened.

Oz: …But it will still hurt him.

Akira:

Oz: That’s why I avoided telling him the truth.

I thought that he might put on a brave front, while his heart would shed tears…

And that it was still too early for him to accept the truth.

Akira: Oz…

The setting sun’s last light casted long shadows in my room.

The unsettling sky stuck between day and night reminded me of Oz’s heart.

Just as the colours of the sky gradually changed, his heart was lost and wandering.

Oz: But perhaps I was wrong.

Perhaps I could have told him sooner.

Perhaps it would have been better if I said something to him, when he found out the truth…

The chance to know that is now lost to time.

The dignified red eyes I knew were now dull and tightly shut.

Dark shadows hid his face.

Oz: …I might have been afraid.

A sea of regret washed over my heart and drowned it.

Oz is the world’s strongest wizard.

He could bend the world to his will, grant any wish. That’s how powerful he is.

Yet his heart still hurts to see his loved ones in pain.

Akira: (It’s not that Oz just didn’t want to make Arthur sad…)

(Oz himself didn’t want to see him like that.)

There was also Arthur’s prophecy. They might’ve overlapped in his head and made the situation harder for him to face.

I think I’ve found out the source of what’s been worrying me the past few days.

Chapter 5

Oz: …Arthur played it with the twins, and then begged me to try it.

When I attempted it, he was overjoyed. After that I remember doing it countless times whenever he asked.

Though we have flown high into the sky and let ourselves fall down many times now…

It is a dangerous kind of play, now that I think about it.

Akira: (So he didn’t realize it was dangerous before…)

Shylock: …Then how about you inform him now?

If you tell him calmly, he will surely listen to your words. He is no longer a child after all.

Oz:

Akira: …?

(What is it, I wonder. The past few days it feels like Shylock’s words to Oz have been hiding another layer to them…)

I restlessly pet Sakitty, trying to ignore the uneasiness in the air.

Despite being randomly petted a lot, Sakitty didn’t make a bothered face at all, and subjected itself to my hands. (Cutie)

Then, Arthur came back from the sky with Sif in his arms.

Shylock: Welcome back, Prince Arthur. I hope you may let me take care of this child now.

Arthur: Of course. Here, Sif. Shylock’s calling for you.

He let Sif down, and they waddled over to Shylock.

Shylock: My mischievous and cute little master. You played so much, your hair is a mess.

If you insist on running around, at least let me comb your hair first.

He sat Sif down on his lap, and with a spell whipped out a beautifully decorated comb.

His slender fingers took a bundle of Sif’s hair and began gently combing.

Arthur: Isn’t that nice, Sif. Shylock is going to tidy you up.

Arthur sat down next to them, and Sif looked joyful.

I couldn’t stop myself from smiling as I watched the happy smiles on their faces.

Akira: Thanks in no small part to you, Arthur and Sif have become really close.

I feel happy just watching them have fun.

Oz: …Yeah.

Arthur: Ahaha. Sif, if you keep grabbing at the comb like that Shylock won’t be able to untangle your hair.

Shylock: I love it when you’re playful, but could you please stay still for me?

Shylock pleaded, bringing his face close. Sif immediately stopped their antics.

Dangling just their feet, they let Shylock continue with a smile.

Shylock: Hmhm, what a good child you are.

If only you could leave this place, I would take you to my bar and make you a drink you would like.

By the way, are you fond of cats? It would make me happy to see you get along with the strays that come here.

While we were listening to that pleasant voice, Sif’s hair was perfectly tied up.

Shylock let Sif off his lap, and as a finishing touch kindly patted their head.

Shylock: Like this, you can play as wildly as you like with no worries.

Arthur: Nice hairstyle, Sif! Thanks, Shylock.

Arthur picked up Sif in his arms, and did upsies with them. Their energetic laughter echoed throughout the church ruins.

Arthur: Master Sage, come play with us!

Akira: Oh, sure! Let’s go, Sakitty.

On Arthur’s invitation Sakitty and I ran to them.

Being so unconditionally attached to us, Sif was super lovable.

Their happy face was so nice to see, we played the games we learned from Oz over and over again.

Arthur: I know it only takes several days for you to grow up, but I wonder how much longer we get to look after you.

I’m excited to see you turn into an adult. I’m sure you’ll turn out to be a splendid fairy surrounded by everyone’s love.

Oz:

Shylock:

Owen: Ohh…

So that’s what’s up.

It’s now been days since we started caring for Sif.

Mitile and I safely completed a mission, and had just arrived back at the manor.

Akira: So you read Sif a picture book yesterday.

Mitile: Yup, with Prince Arthur. When I was little, my brother often read me books.

Sif was super adorable sitting on our laps and listening so intently!

Akira: Aww. Now I really wish I could’ve made time to go with you guys then.

But at least I got to go on a starry night stroll with them thanks to Mithra bringing me later.

Mitile: Wow, that also sounds nice!

Though the amount of time each of us could spend with Sif varied on our schedules, at least everyday someone in our group was able to visit them.

Sif was so fond of us now that the moment they’d spot us they would come running towards us with a toothy smile on their face.

Mitile: How’s today? Should we go see Sif after this?

Akira: After I finish some other tasks, I was planning on asking Oz or Mithra depending on their availability to take me. Will you come too?

Mitile: Yes! Ah, speak of the Demon Lord!

Oz: Sage.

Akira: Oz. With that outfit on, I’m guessing you’re going to see Sif with Arthur?

Oz: Arthur has gone on ahead. I came to pick you up.

Akira: Me?

(I didn’t ask Oz to pick me up after my mission though, because I had no idea when it would end…)

(I am asking practically everyday though, so maybe he thought of me and stayed behind?)

While I thought that, I could see people going down the stairs.

Shylock: Why, hello everyone.

Akira: Hello. Are you two off to see Sif as well?

It just so happens that Oz came to pick me up.

Murr: Nope! We’re wearing these because we were roleplaying in Shylock’s room!

We’re not going to see the siofra!

Mitile & Akira: Roleplaying?

Mitile: In that outfit…?

Akira: Just what were you…

Shylock: Hmhm, I leave that to your imagination.

However, since we are wearing this we might as well tag along. Is that alright with you?

Oz: I don’t mind. What about you two?

Akira: Could you wait a moment?

We just finished a mission, so before I forget I’d like to write my report down in the Sage’s journal.

Mitile: Me too. I want to report to my brother and the others first.

Murr: I’ll go after saying my greetings to the moon!

Oz: Then I shall take Shylock first. I’ll come back for the rest of you.

Akira: Huh? But won’t that be too much of a hassle…

Oz: This is me you’re talking to. And I mustn’t leave Arthur alone any longer.

Vox Nox.

Akira & Mitile: Ah…

Murr: They’re gone! Even though Arthur should be fine!

Akira: Y-Yeah. There shouldn’t be anything dangerous, so…

(What was that all about?)

Sif: Kyakya!

Arthur: Ahaha. You must really like hugs if you’re that pleased.

I get it. I can’t tell you how many times being wrapped in warmth has made me happy.

But I’ve also realized something hugging you.

That even the hugger gains happiness from holding a tiny warmth in their arms…

I wonder if Lord Oz also felt this way hugging me.

Owen: Hey there, Prince.

Arthur: Owen. You came too.

Owen: Where’s Oz? Not with you?

Arthur: He went to get the others. Do you want to hug Sif too?

Owen: No way. I didn’t come here to babysit.

I came here to chat with you. To tell the Prince the truth he doesn’t know.

Arthur: The truth?

Owen: That’s right. About that little fairy you’ve been coddling.

The more love you pour into that fairy the more love you get back.

And when they become an adult they’ll ask you, who they adore so much, what your wish is.

Then they will grant it, and die.

Arthur: Uh…

Owen: That’ll be this fairy’s whole life. So ephemeral, pitiable, and boring.

Oz knew about this, and kept it from you.

How cruel. Even though he knew it’d hurt you sooner or later.

Just laughable, the sight of you naively and innocently playing around with that fairy.

Arthur: …I’m sure he didn’t tell me for my sake. So as to not hurt me.

Because he is a kind man.

Owen: As if. He’s a coldhearted Demon Lord wearing the skin of a righteous man in order to fool you.

Would a righteous man really stay silent on something so important?

Arthur:

Owen: He keeps you in the dark because you’re still a child he has to protect.

That’s how Oz has kept so many secrets from you.

…Ah, I see. In truth, Oz doesn’t trust you, that’s why.

You’re like a pet to him. You only exist at his side to be doted on.

Arthur: T-That’s not…

Oz: Vox Nox.

Chapter 4

Mithra: Arthim.

Bradley: Ooh. It sure is handy to go wherever ya want with just a door.

Owen: But you can do that too Bradley. Just sneeze and you’ll go anywhere.

Bradley: I don’t do that ‘cuz I wanna. I’m blastin’ off against my will.

Mithra: Well, you do have to be on my level to use teleportation magic. Be grateful.

Anyways, you two must have nothing good to do to be tagging along with me in the middle of the night.

Bradley: Look who’s talkin’.

Owen: That’s rich coming from you.

Sif: Step step…

Mithra: Ah, you’re here.

Bradley: Yo, One Year’s Meat. Doing well?

Owen: Good evening, One Year’s Candy. Looks like no monsters have come to attack you.

Mithra: Please don’t give them weird nicknames.

Remember, I’m your father. Since I must, I’ll be taking care of you tonight.

Here, come eat this.

Bradley: That’s a big lump of meat. Can they even eat this? Munch munch.

Mithra: I believe when I was this little I also ate something like this, so I’m sure it’s fine.

Owen: So why are you eating meat when we have that lump of meat?

Bradley: Who cares. I stole it from the kitchen before we left.

Owen: Cookies are yummier than some meat. Munch munch…

Bradley: Are you some candy vendor? Can’t believe you’re eating sweets at this time of night.

Owen: Nevermind that, isn’t that lump of meat too big?

Even if they could eat it, that tiny mouth of theirs couldn’t tear it apart.

Mithra: How bothersome…since you’re nagging so much why don’t you feed them.

Owen: No way. What a chore.

Mithra: Bradley.

Bradley: Ask like that and no one’ll do it. Just cut them into pieces, man.

Think of slicing the meat into pieces as part of taking care of them. It’s no biggie.

Mithra:

…You have a point.

Bradley: Anyways, it gets real gloomy here…I shoulda brought beer.

Owen: Too bad. It would’ve been fun to give them alcohol.

Maybe they would’ve gotten so drunk they’d give us a hundred year’s worth of candy and meat.

Bradley: Like I’d waste my precious alcohol doing somethin’ as useless as that.

Owen: Then why’d you wish you brought it?

Bradley: The remains of a once thriving village, with its last remaining siofra…

I was wondering how a drink would taste in memory of them all. Wouldn’t hurt to find out.

Owen: Such a weird hobby. There’s no point in drinking your heart out for those who’ve already gone.

Bradley: Really? I thought you liked these kinds of stories.

Owen: …? What do you mean?

Bradley: This village prospered from taking care of the siofra population near them.

They were probably worshipped like gods. That, or they treasured them the same as they would’ve human children.

…but lowlifes exist anywhere.

Owen: Go on.

Bradley: One day, some guy heard the rumours and came to the village thinkin’ of makin’ a buck or two.

The siofra were captured, and their numbers rapidly decreased.

And then this village that lost its worth and residents was abandoned, becoming the ruins we’re in now.

…How about that?

Owen: Huuuh? That was all a tale you spun?

Bradley: Heh, you never know. I’m just mimicking your chatty mouth when you go on your creepy monologues.

Owen: How about if the village came to ruin because of infighting? That would be more entertaining.

Bradley: Haha! Your personality is shit as ever.

Mithra: Guys, you’re being loud.

Haaaugh…I’m getting bored of caring for the kid.

Owen: If you don’t want them I’ll take them.

Hey siofra. Don’t you wanna have fun with me instead of meanie papa Mithra?

Since you look like a child you probably prefer candy over meat. Here, I’ll share my cookie with you.

Sif: Hmph…

Bradley: Wow, they’re using both arms to push you away. They don’t need your half-eaten goods.

Owen: Huh? Hey, do you wanna die?

Bradley: They know how much of a meanie you are now. Kids’re sharp like that.

C’mere, I’ll make you strong.

Sif: !

Bradley: Come on, up you go. Kids love high places.

You look like one, so you might as well learn a lot to become more human.

Mithra: Hey. Give them back.

Bradley: Woah. Don’t pull so suddenly, that’s dangerous.

Sif: Kyakya.

Bradley & Owen: Ah, they laughed.

Mithra: See, they like me more. Good, good.

Owen: Why’re you stirring up their hair like that?

Mithra: I am petting their head.

When Rutile does this to Mitile he smiles. Children enjoy this action, it seems.

…Actually, I think I remember Tiletta doing this to Rutile too.

Bradley: Haah…man, you and everybody else are really going for it.

Pipehead, the Prince, and the others are one thing, but Oz showing affection for this little fairy? What a joke.

Owen: Seriously. Oz seems like he’d be the least interested in playing house.

Mithra: Hmm, maybe he has a lot of free time too?

Forget that, I’ve cut the meat. You eat it like this. Please chomp away.

Sif: …sniff sniff.

*chomp*

Mithra: Haha, they ate it.

See, it’s yummy isn’t it.

Days passed since we started looking after Sif.

Taking a break between official duties, Arthur had come to see the fairy.

Sif: Kyakya!

Arthur: Hahaha! Amazing, Sif! What a rascal you are, scaling Lord Oz’s back like that.

Oz: Children love high places. You used to climb my back like this too.

You would climb my back no matter what I was doing, so for a period of time I would carry you on my shoulders as I walked.

Arthur: Hehe. The world I saw from your shoulders was so wonderful after all. I remember begging you during our walks to carry me.

Speaking of walks, I also loved when you held my hands and helped me jump.

Especially when Lords Snow and White, and Lord Figaro came over. I would be in the middle and you would all lift me together…

Oz: …Then we should do it.

If you enjoyed it, then Sif surely will too. I will hold their other hand.

Arthur: ! Yes. Come here, Sif!

One, two, up we go!

Sif: Kyahaha!

Akira: Wow, hand swinging. Looks like fun.

Shylock and I asked Oz to take us with him here.

I was holding Sakitty, watching over the three warmly when that beautifully sculpted mouth of Shylock’s let out a deep sigh.

Shylock: I never thought there’d be a day where I would witness Oz playing around with a fairy.

Akira: Ahaha. True, it isn’t something likely to happen.

Seeing it with my own eyes though makes it clear to me that Oz raised Arthur.

A lot of the games that Oz has been playing with Sif use the body…

Judging from their conversation, it’s all stuff that he picked up from trying to play with Arthur.

Arthur: Lord Oz, may I please carry Sif?

Oz: Yes, support their head with your hand to not let them fall.

Arthur: Understood. Just like how you used to hold me…right.

Oz: You still remember?

Arthur: Of course. I remember feeling so safe and warm supported in your arms.

I remember doing upsies, shoulder rides…and oh! I think you did something like this too.

He said, and Arthur flew straight upwards to the sky while carrying Sif.

Shylock, Oz, & Akira: …!?

I thought for a second that he was going to fly into the sun, but as if he lost all his magic he suddenly came falling down with speed.

Akira: (Eeeeek…!)

(If I remember correctly, this is what they call the Kirken Meteor. Everytime I see it it gets me anxious…)

Sif: Kyakya!

Arthur: Ahaha! It is fun, isn’t it Sif?

They repeatedly flew upwards and dropped downwards, laughing happily.

Looking up at that, Oz raised his voice, seemingly a little worried.

Oz: Arthur! Come down this instant.

Arthur: It’s fine! I won’t drop Sif.

Shylock and I stepped up beside Oz who was anxious.

Shylock: Hmhm, children do love these exciting games.

I understand how Prince Arthur grew up to be so courageous and gallant now.

Akira: That game…didn’t Snow and White teach him that?

Did you do that often with Arthur, Oz?

Chapter 3

Oz: Vox Nox.

We promptly made time the next day, and Oz, Murr, Mitile, and I came to the church ruins.

Akira: I hope Sif’s doing well. If only we could have brought them to the manor…

Oz: It is the siofra’s nature to not depart the land they are born in. We cannot bring them anywhere.

Because of that, it was decided we would commute here to raise Sif.

We would keep in mind our missions and schedules, and come visit when the timing aligned.

Akira: (They’re not like a human child who you have to be around 24/7…)

(And Oz did put up a barrier so magic beasts wouldn’t come in.)

Hellooo. Sif, we’re hereee.

Murr: Where could they be hiding~? Maybe they’d come out faster if we’d brought their beloved Arthur.

Mitile: But he’s not here since he’s got official duties. We have to try hard to find them…ah!

Sif was on the stone bench that Arthur put them to sleep in last night.

They were lying on their side like they were basking in the sunlight, and when they heard us calling, raised their head and got up.

Murr: Hey little siofra…no wait. Sif, tell us lots about yourself.

When you transform into a human, do you also gain the feelings and expressions of people too? For example…when people are hugged or have their name called, they tend to recognize that as being loved.

For the most part at least. When it comes to natural instincts…licking or play-biting is also a way of showing peaceful emotions too.

Tell me, which approach do you recognize as showing love?

Mitile: Mister Murr! Sif’ll hate you if you treat them like some experiment.

And you should crouch when talking to children, so you don’t intimidate them. Like this, and make eye contact…

Murr: Are you teaching me now? Should I be a kid too?

Mitile: Whuuh, how does it come to that!?

As I watched their banter from the corner of my eye, I continued unpacking our things with Oz.

Akira: Thanks Oz, for carrying everyone’s stuff.

Oz: It was nothing.

Everyone in the manor had passed us presents for Sif.

When we told them about the fairy, they brought out all kinds of things they thought we might’ve needed for raising a kid.

Akira: There’s snacks and small meals made by Riquet, Nero, and Rutile in case they can eat,

and pillows and blankets from the other wizards when they heard it was for a small child…

We also received a lot of toys, I hope Sif can play with them…

Oz: That fairy may not be a human, but they have a desire to blend in with people and animals. They might at least take interest.

Still, keep your expectations low.

Akira: You’re right. I’ll just think of it as lucky if they take a liking to them…!

Huh. There’s toys on this chair…they’re dolls made of wood. Did we bring something like this?

Oz: Those were here before. They were likely used by the former residents of this village.

Akira: Makes sense. Maybe the church was looking after children?

If so, do you think a siofra could have been among them…?

Oz: I cannot say for sure, but siofras used to live in groups.

Because of a certain characteristic of theirs however, their numbers have slowly diminished. The one we found was likely the only one left in this land.

Akira: Certain characteristic? Do you mean…

I suddenly heard the sound of running footsteps behind me. When I turned to look, I saw Sif dashing towards me.

When they saw our faces though, they went to hide in the shadows as if they were surprised.

Akira: Eh?

Oz:

Mitile who was chasing after them drooped his eyebrows in bewilderment.

Mitile: It feels like they’re more distant than yesterday.

Murr: The closer we get the farther they go!

Akira: I thought we got pretty close yesterday, I wonder if they’ve forgotten?

Mithra: Arthim.

A large door appeared before me. Out came Mithra and Shylock.

Mithra: Ah, there you are Master Sage.

Shylock: My, is it hide and seek time with Sif? They’re so cute hiding in the shadow of that tree.

Murr: Oh, Shylock. I thought you said you were gonna be busy the whole day.

Shylock: I finished my tasks earlier than expected, so I had Mithra bring me here.

Mitile: Mister Mithra, why’re you still wearing yesterday’s clothes?

Mithra: Too lazy to change them. Anyways, I’ve been looking for you Master Sage.

I want to take a nap so hurry up and take my…hm?

Mitile & Murr: Ah.

Before I realized it, Sif had run from the shadows to Mithra’s legs.

They squeezed the hem of his cloak, and the sight of them looking up at Mithra was that of a child attached to their parent.

Mitile: Huh? They’re not scared of you, Mister Mithra.

Murr: Mithra, they love you!

Mithra: Wow. You may be tiny but you’re smart as well.

That’s right. Your strongest dad is me.

Oz: Wrong.

Mithra: Huh? Are you implying I’m weak?

Shylock: No, he’s not. He means to say that it’s because of your clothes.

You’re the only one wearing the same outfit as yesterday.

Akira: Uhm, do you mean Sif’s taken a liking to those clothes or…?

Oz: Fairies are sensitive to change. Mithra looks the exact same as when they met.

It is likely that Sif sees us as strangers since we’re in different clothes.

Shylock: Inviebelle.

With Shylock’s magic his clothes changed to that of yesterday’s. Then, he spreads his arms out to Sif.

Shylock: Here, it’s your big brother from yesterday. Come to me.

Sif immediately ungrasped Mithra’s cloak and jumped into Shylock’s arms.

Mithra: Wha, hey.

Mitile: If that’s how it works then…

Ortonik Sealsispilce!

Murr: Eanul Rambul!

Oz: Vox Nox.

Akira: (Even Oz…)

Starting with Mitile’s spell, everyone else changed their clothes to the ones they had yesterday. It was Oz’s spell that changed mine.

Mitile: Sif. Hey, do you remember me?

When Mitile reached his hand out, Sif placed their hand on his.

Sif: Kyahaha…!

Akira, Mitile, & Murr: They laughed!

Mithra: Haaaugh…even though they were just attached to me.

Akira: (They must really be sensitive to change if they saw us as strangers for wearing different clothes…)

(I gotta tell the ones who didn’t come today!)

After holding Mitile’s hand, Sif toddled on over to Oz.

Oz:

Sif:

Murr: It’s like they’re having a staring contest.

Mitile: Wow…I don’t think I have the guts to look into Lord Oz’s eyes this long…

Mithra: I could stare into his eyes forever though.

Shylock: Ah…anyways, their attention has slipped once again. They seem to be interested in the gifts by Oz’s feet.

Oz: Vox Nox.

He opened a box with his spell, and stuffed inside were tiny nuts and berries.

As soon as they laid eyes on it, Sif stretched their hand out without hesitation.

Oz: You want these?

Sif:

Oz: That is food.

Taking a berry, Oz chews one as if to make an example.

Sif quickly copied him.

Sif: …! Kyakya!

Akira: They’re happy!

Shylock: It seems the taste is to their liking.

Murr: Let’s open up the other presents!

Akira: Yes!

Mithra: Ah, these pillows and blankets are perfect for naptime.

Mitile: Hey, we brought those for Sif. You can’t just take them for yourself!

Shylock: …Oz.

Shouldn’t you tell the Master Sage and the others at least?

Oz:

Now is not the time.

Shylock: I’d rather not keep them from the truth like this but…

May you have no regrets.

Chapter 2

Mithra: Siofra…I think I’ve read about them in a book I randomly flipped through once.

Did they look like humans though?

Bradley: Pretty sure they start out lookin’ like a fluffball. They just sleep ‘til they find someone to be their parent.

Akira: Parent?

Oz: Siofras recognize the first living being they see as their parent.

They then imitate their appearance.

Mitile: So they’re mimicking us…?

Shylock: Yes. Did you hear a laugh when we first looked in the hollow?

It is said that siofra laugh in the voice of the species it recognizes its parent as.

And then, between the several days from its birth to adulthood, it grants a wish of the one who gave it love…

A devoted little fairy they are.

Arthur: …Now that you mention it, I think I’ve heard of them before. A fairy that repays the love and kindness it was given.

Akira: Repays…what an upstanding fairy.

Murr: Siofras love humans and animals. They want to mix in with us.

As thanks for keeping them at our side and raising them, they give back a small happiness.

Akira: But surely it can’t grant everything. What about…giving you a yummy meal?

Murr: I think it can do that at least?

Bradley: Like a year’s worth of meat.

Owen: Or a year’s worth of candy.

Murr: Like that! Of course, it can’t do anything big like change the laws of the world.

Akira: I get it now. Ah…but it was the four of you at once who looked inside the tree hollow, right?

If that happens, who ends up being the parent?

Arthur, Shylock, Oz, and Mithra. The four wizards made eye contact.

Mithra: Isn’t it me? I’m going to be the strongest man one day.

Arthur: If it’s the first person they see that becomes their parent, then perhaps it is the one who made eye contact first?

Oz: Did you make eye contact?

Arthur: No…I was the one who carried them out of the hollow, but I don’t remember if I made eye contact with them…

Shylock: The inside of the hollow was dark, so it’s hard to tell.

It could be the same for this child. Though they have taken the appearance of a person, they could still be undecided on who their parent is.

Mitile: So you four are now candidates to be their parent?

We all looked at the fairy, and the siofra squeezed Arthur’s index finger with their tiny hand.

A cherubic face quietly stared at Arthur.

Murr: So far it’s Arthur they’re attached to!

Arthur:

Returning the stare, Arthur looked at the adorable fairy child with love, but there seemed to be something else in his gaze.

I wondered if there was something else on his mind. His gaze was that of one reflecting himself.

He gently patted the tiny fingers with the hand that wasn’t being held, and then he looked at me.

Arthur: Master Sage. If it’s alright, I would like it if you could leave care of this child to me.

Akira: You?

Arthur: Yes. Shylock mentioned that it takes only several days for a siofra to become an adult.

I know I have my duties as a prince and as your wizard, but luckily I have nothing big scheduled for the next few days.

Shylock: Yes, but, this fairy…

Oz: With or without you here to raise them, this fairy will grow up the same.

And if there is something that you wish for, I shall grant it.

Arthur: Thank you, Lord Oz. However, that is not what I meant.

We met each other, and they held my hand.

A tiny body such as theirs surely holds many worries. If they will depend on me, then I want to be there for them.

Oz:

…Is that so.

Arthur: And if I may indulge, Lord Oz. May I ask you to teach me the basics of child rearing?

Oz: Me…?

Arthur: Yes. Just like the days I spent with you in the North…

I want you to be here to help me take care of this child.

Oz:

Just listening got me curious.

What was their past like? I’ve heard stories, but that’s different than seeing it with my own eyes.

Akira: (Oz said he raised Arthur with the intention of turning him to stone and eating him, but Arthur is perfectly alive right now.)

(It’s definitely Oz who picked up a baby Arthur and raised him until he had to return to Central Country.)

(I wonder if I’ll get to know how Oz was like with Arthur by seeing how he takes care of the siofra.)

Owen: Oz and parenting? What a joke.

Akira: Owen.

Arthur: It is no joke. He is the one who did his best to raise me.

Owen: And I’m saying that’s unbelievable. Did Oz cast a hypnosis spell on you?

Owen crouched down by the siofra. Then, he starts poking their soft cheek with his finger.

Owen: He’s a short-tempered, merciless, cold-blooded Demon Lord. He might kill this feeble little fairy quicker than you think.

We wouldn’t want that to happen, so how about you let me raise them instead?

Mithra: Why you? I’m the parent candidate. I have the right to let my wish be granted.

Owen: Ooh. You’re gonna have your wish granted by a weakling such as this?

Mithra: You too. I just don’t like the idea of having what’s mine taken from me.

Bradley: When ya say that it makes this bandit want to take it even more.

I know you two won’t take this wish business seriously. Just watch and see how I put it to more use than you chumps.

Owen: Can the one year’s worth of meat guy not speak?

Bradley: Your wish ain’t any different from mine.

Owen: Huuuh?

Akira: Hey, hey…!

Shylock: Oz. Isn’t there something else you should tell Arthur?

Oz:

Shylock: Oz.

Oz: Do not interfere.

Arthur.

Arthur: Yes.

Oz: …Though you will be looking after them, it is not plausible for you to be together all the time.

You will have to raise them in a way that will not interrupt your life at the palace or manor.

Arthur: ! Yes! I’ll make sure to not trouble everyone else.

Shylock: What a troublesome man…

I understand. Then I shall participate too.

Akira: You too?

Shylock: Yes, I’m a parent candidate too after all.

If that’s alright with you, Oz.

Oz: Do as you like.

Murr: Okay, then I’m gonna volunteer myself as a parental candidate for siofra too!

It’s not everyday you get to watch Shylock stand up to Oz or a siofra growing up after all!

Shylock: Goodness. This isn’t a show, you know?

Akira: (This is kinda surprising. When it comes to stuff like this Shylock usually lets the younger wizards have a go at it…)

(Maybe he has a wish he wants granted?)

Mitile: Then let me help out!

I might know a few things from taking care of the younger grade schoolers back in South.

Arthur: That’s reassuring. I’ll be glad to have you, Mitile.

Lord Oz, will you be raising this child with us too?

Oz:

If that is your wish.

Arthur: Thank you!

Did you hear that, Siofra? There is no man more reliable than Lord Oz. You can rest assured around him.

Akira: Uhm, so “Siofra” is the name of the species, right? Like “Cat” or “Dog”.

Since we’ll be looking after them now, maybe we should give them a nickname.

Like, since it’s siofra…Sif!

Arthur: Sif! That’s nice.

Sif. We’ll be calling you Sif from now on.

Arthur smiled and looked truly overjoyed as he patted the siofra Sif’s head.

I thought that maybe Oz would have a similar expression watching that, but…

Oz:

For some reason, he was averting his gaze.

As if he just ate something bitter.

Chapter 1

Oz: Vox Nox.

The second he raised his staff, the herd of magic beasts before us let out cries of pain as they evaporated.

The sunlight poured into the creepy Church ruins, as if returning it to its once saintly atmosphere.

Oz: Sage, I’ve dealt with the beasts we were tasked with.

Akira: Thank you, Oz. Now we just wait for the others, I guess.

Thank you too, Sakitty, for protecting me.

I hugged the Sakitty that was floating in front of me as my shield.

This was once a village a few hundred years ago, in the borders of Central Country.

We had received a report that magic beasts were roaming around the village ruins, so we came to deal with them as the Sage’s wizards.

Akira: It sounded like it was going to be a pretty dangerous mission, but they weren’t much of a threat at all.

Oz: These kinds of pests are nothing.

Akira: (That’s our Oz…! He did just execute a whole pack of monsters by himself.)

(Then everyone else should be doing okay too. The Northern wizards probably see it as a chore though…)

Murr: Ahaha! Over here’s slick and clean too!

Arthur: Master Sage, Lord Oz. We have cleaned up the beasts in the western ward.

Shylock: Mitile performed excellently. He was very heroic on his broom luring the beasts with Prince Arthur.

Mitile: Heehee. They were tiny, but even I beat a few!

Akira: Wonderful work, everyone! Welcome back!

Oz: Arthur, there’s a leaf in your hair.

Arthur: Oh, you’re right. I did ride my broom into a tree, so it’s likely from then.

Thank you for taking it off for me!

I couldn’t help but smile seeing Oz remove a leaf from Arthur’s hair like he’d done this many times before.

Oz is Arthur’s foster parent.

He may be called a Demon Lord by the public, but it always warms my heart thinking about the countless occasions he doted on Arthur like this.

Watching over them warmly, the Northern wizards arrived with the annoyed expressions I thought they’d have.

Bradley: Hey, ya gotta be joking. That was it?

That was a walk in the park for a mission that was supposed to be crazy dangerous.
Mithra: Exactly. I came expecting a good time only to see a bunch of weaklings.

Owen: Did you call us out here for pest extermination because you underestimate our strength?

Akira: I, I’m sorry! The report said that vicious beasts had gathered, so…

Arthur: It’s amazing how you three managed to subdue all those beasts this quickly, and with a larger area than the rest of us too.

As expected of our Northern wizards. Don’t you think so, Lord Oz?

Oz:

That is true.

Bradley: Yeah right, your face doesn’t say so.

Owen: His face is saying that he alone was enough.

Mithra: I’m mad now. I’m going to kill you.

Oz: Only in your dreams could you turn me into stone.

Mithra:

Akira: G-Guys, we’ve already finished the mission, so why don’t we cool our heads…!

Shylock: Now now, we should be grateful that we completed the mission with everyone safe and sound.

Though it is a shame that Chloe made these new outfits for us, only to wear it for such a short time.

Murr: I like this fit, so I wanna wear it for longer!

Arthur: How about we leave going home for later and wander around the area for a bit?

Mitile: I like that idea. Then we should have a picnic!

Akira: Woo, sounds fun!

Mitile: Right! I actually have this basket of food from Mister Nero since he thought we’d return late.

Owen: Ooh. Any sweets in that basket?

Bradley: I know there’s fried chicken in there.

Mithra: I want a meatball.

Mitile: Of course! Mister Nero made everyone’s favourites!

Mithra, Owen, & Bradley: Yay.

We went on a stroll around the area while searching for a picnic spot.

The trees of this abandoned village had grown so thick and leafy they were practically its own forest. Here and there we also spotted relics of the past.

While everyone strolled off where they wanted, before me Arthur stopped in his tracks.

Akira: Arthur?

Arthur: This tree…

What Arthur’s eyes were fixed on was an ancient tree.

There was a hole by its base that a small child could fit inside.

Shylock: Is that a tree hollow?

Arthur: Yeah. When Lord Oz picked me up it was also under a tree like this one.

He found me curled up in the hollow of that tree during a snowstorm.

Eyelids slightly closed on those blue eyes that looked to be reminiscing cherished memories.

The place where Arthur was picked up by Oz, was also the place that he was abandoned.

That he can speak of it like a precious treasure to him is a measure as to how meaningful that meeting was to him.

Shylock: …My.

Akira: Shylock?

Shylock: I can sense faint magic from within this tree hollow. It does not feel malevolent however…

Arthur: …You’re right. Let’s look. Please stand back just in case, Master Sage.

Akira: A-Alright. I understand.

I took some distance from the hollow, holding Sakitty in my arms. Mithra and Oz also appeared to have noticed, approaching the hollow from other directions.

Mithra: Something fun in there?

Oz: This presence is…

They leaned their bodies towards the inside of the hollow after Shylock and Arthur.

And then–

???: Kyahaha.

Akira: (Huh, a kid?)

I was startled by the sound of a child’s voice coming from the tree hollow.

Arthur promptly reached his hand inside the hollow. What appeared was…

Oz: Of course, a Siofra…

Akira: Siofra?

What Arthur scooped out from the hollow was a strange being the size of a three or four year old with long hair.

At a first glance they resembled a human child, but their unusual skin colour and hair told me they were of a different species.

Nestled in Arthur’s arms, they looked like both a spoiled child and a feeble one.

Arthur: Are you okay? You seem very weak.

Why were you all alone…where did your friends go?

Oz:

Mithra: I don’t really care, but this one stopped moving after it laughed. Is it dead?

Akira: Eh!?
Shylock: No, they still breathe. Shall we take this child and move to a wider space?

Calling everyone else around us, we made our way back to the church ruins.

The being that Arthur had carried was laid on a stone bench that was still standing.

Arthur: Pernoctant Nixzo!

This is sugar. You’ll feel better if you eat it.

Mitile: I have my water bottle. Here, have some.

Arthur and Mitile tried to get them to eat the sugar and drink the water.

Except all the siofra did was silently stare, like they didn’t know what the two were doing.

Oz: This one still does not understand that sugar and water are to be consumed.

You should show them that by ingesting it first.

At Oz’s suggestion, the two young wizards ate the sugar and sipped water. Once they confirmed that the siofra saw them, they brought out the sugar and water again.

After a pause, the siofra copied their actions and took them both. When they did, I could see their expression brighten up.

Arthur: Want some more? Pernoctant Nixzo!

Their tiny mouth gobbled up the sugar that flowed towards their mouth.

Akira: (Good. They look okay now…)

Bradley: Wow, you picked up somethin’ interesting.

Owen: They sure did. I’m surprised this thing eats sugar.

Akira: (Do they know something about the siofra?)

(Anyways, it’s not just their appearance. Their movements are like that of a human child. It’s sorta uncanny…)

Big eyes as innocent as a baby looked up at us. They were so adorable I couldn’t take my eyes off them.

The siofra had grey skin, covered by clothes made from leaves, and long hair like the branches of trees.

Mitile: This kid…looks like they were born from a tree.

They’re not human, right? Does anyone know what they are?

Murr: A siofra! There used to be a lot in this region, but you’ll rarely find them these days. They’re a strange fairy species.

Chapter 10

Oz: Are you alright.

Mitile: Lord Oz…

Riquet: Oz...h.

They suddenly frowned, nodding their heads quickly.

I wondered if they were full of relief having finally met with the Oz they had been searching for.

Their eyes were red, and cheeks tear-stained. They must’ve used a lot of courage.

Observing that, Oz quietly let out a sigh.

His fingers drew a shape on their foreheads, and their numerous cuts stained with blood softly closed up.

Mitile: …Ah…

Oz: It is time for you to rest. I will end things.

Sage.

Akira: Yes…!

Surrounded by those frightening monsters that hunted after Mitile and Riquet to the point they were battered, I strongly gripped the hand that was in mine.

Gently, I began to float.

With just my hand in his, no spell or broom, Oz and I floated upwards to the ceiling.

And he raised his staff high.

It was a movement as simple as that, but I could feel goosebumps growing.

The world rumbled.

Something big was going to happen.

Owen: …!

Cain: Owen!? Where’d…

Snow: No good! Everyone, on your brooms now!

White: Or else you’ll be dragged into Oz’s spell!

Chloe: Eh!?

Mitile: B-But…

Riquet: We're out of mana…

Cain: Get on mine! I’ll carry you!

Mitile: Underst…gweh!

Owen: You’re with me. Three on a broom with Cain’s magic won’t get you out quick enough.

If you fall, I won’t catch you. So cling on for your life.

Mitile: Thank…waaaaugh!!

Cain: Thanks, Owen! Alright Riquet, hold on tight!

Riquet: Yes!

Chloe: Lords Snow and White! I’ll take your picture frame then.

Snow & White: Thank you!

Akira: Everyone’s gone!? W-What about, me…

If it was a spell strong enough that they had to leave the grounds, then what would that mean for me who was standing in the middle of it all?

When I started to panic, Oz brought me in close as if to soothe a child.

Oz: Fear not. I won’t let you or anyone die.

Akira: (Ah…the goosebumps are gone. Oz must’ve cast something.)

Just as I calmed down.

Oz: Vox Nox.

A thunderous lighting strike tore the ground apart.

My sight was stolen by a bright white light flashing.

A second delayed, the sound of destruction entered my ears.

Akira: Waaaaaugh!?

Debris larger than a person flew past me like it was a snowflake in the wind.

The world was breaking apart, lightning strike by lightning strike.

Blue flames fell like the stars in the night sky descended.

A snowstorm like the breath of the grim reaper.

The ceiling was cracking, the walls were tearing.

The mausoleum crumbled down in seconds as if it were a bunch of building blocks.

And burned to cinders by chillingly blue flames, the living cucaruccas with it.

Their death throes were cut short, and they became ashes before they could even writhe from the flames. Cold eyes looked down upon their bodies.

Akira: Oz…

Oz: I require a little more of your power.

We must ensure these beasts of their extinction.

The heavens thundered. Over and over and over, obsessive lightning destroyed the hiding spots of the cucaruccas.

Hellfire poured from the skies and incite the blizzards to become more ruthless.

That face of Oz was more cold, beautiful, and terrifying than the hell that spread beneath him.

The merciless destruction he wrought reminded me of his other title.

But this man who was so absolute, remorseless, unsympathetic, was our saviour and vanquisher of evil.

Akira: (...Divine punishment…)

A remarkable flash of light shined.

A thunderous roar that could wake the sun up.

My eyes closed from the shock.

Akira: …? Huh…

When I came to, I was in a snowfield.

The wizards, back in their training clothes, were facing the same direction.

Mitile and Riquet, who were both peering into my face, relaxed their expressions.

Mitile: Master Sage! Good, you’re awake.

Riquet: It seems you lost consciousness during the final blow of Oz’s spells. It must’ve been quite the fright.

Akira: Is that so…but, what about the cucaruccas…

Snow & White: Over there.

The twins pointed to where the other wizards were staring.

When I looked, in the far distance was a plain engulfed in blue flames.

For a moment I wondered what it was, until I realized.

It was the remains of the mausoleum ruins.

Snow: Those flames will eventually be put out by snow. The cucaruccas have been completely extinguished.

White: They won’t be coming back.

Mitile, Riquet, & Akira: …Thank goodness…

The night wind softly blew across the snowfields in the tune of a lullaby.

We let out a breath of relief as Oz slowly approached us.

Riquet immediately nestled up close to him, like a tired kitten.

Oz gently patted that tiny back, and then summoned enough magic sugars to fill a small palm.

He stares at Mitile while blinking away his sleepiness.

I noticed that Mitile was paler than when he had to leave me.

Wondering why he was being looked at, Mitile’s eyes darted elsewhere, his shoulders trembling. Oz grabbed his hand and opened it.

Oz: You used a lot of magic. Eat these sugars.

Mitile: Th..thank you very much. …Does sugar work on mana exhaustion?

Oz: No such miracle medicines exist. It all depends on your heart.

Mitile: I see…

Oz: …When we regrouped, the cucaruccas were already weakened and in pain.

I could smell some kind of potion. Was that you?

Mitile: Y-Yes.

Riquet: It was Mitile’s idea. He thought of spreading pesticide through a tornado.

It was our last resort with the little mana we had left.

Oz: That so…

Watching the young pair of wizards, Oz was silent.

He then turned to each of them, eyes like a fireplace.

Oz: …It was not the training session we had in mind…

But tonight you two exceeded expectations, having fought with bravery and wit while protecting the Sage and yourselves.

…Good job.

Mitile & Riquet:

Riquet: Yes…

Riquet nodded with tearful eyes.

For a split second, Mitile also frowned, crinkling his eyebrows.

Except he then lifted his face with a dignified look.

Mitile: I did my best!

His cheeks were still pale. His exhaustion from using magic to his limits settled in with every blink.

Even so–he stood with his back straight and tall.

Proud.

As a wizard who managed to survive a frightful night.

Riquet: Still, I wanted to try that training of yours, Oz. I was prepared to give it my all.

Can we still do it, on another day?

Oz: Yeah.

Riquet: Yay. Let’s work hard, Mitile!

Mitile: Huh? I, I think I’m good for awhile…

Oz: Do not fret. It will not be right away.

You must rest and recuperate, and when you restore your spirits we will hold it in a safer location.

Riquet: How long to restore our spirits?

Oz: A year…

Mitile & Riquet: That’s too long!

Feeling at peace with the three that regained their usual banter, I look up at the night sky.

The Great Calamity floated in the sky. Pale and beautiful as it shined its light on the blankets of snow.

As if this was any other peaceful night, with no storms or disasters.

Akira: (...The youngest wizards of the Sage, Mitile and Riquet.)

(And Oz, who cannot use magic at night…)

Next to me I could hear their lively voices brightening up.

In my heart, I earnestly made a wish.

Akira: (Please–)

(May we still safely laugh like this, after our battle with the Great Calamity.)

(May the nights we know come to visit us as always…)

Chapter 9

Snow: They’re all going somewhere together.

Cain: Weird. Should be instinct for them to be trying to poke a hole in Oz and the twin’s defenses to nab the Master Sage…

Owen: …It’s normal for starving beasts to forget instinct when there’s easier prey nearby.

I know of some mountain dogs that were just like this. Mountain dogs usually run away if they fail to hunt down their target.

But even though a herd of deer fought them off, those dogs turned back and went after a baby deer that strayed from the herd.

Chloe: So…the cucaruccas are right now going after…

Snow: …Mitile and Riquet are in danger! Let’s move!

Mitile: That was bad…! Riquet, you alright!?

Riquet: …Mitile…

…, h…! Why did you come after me! Go back this instant!

Mitile: Back…is, isn’t that uncalled for!? I came to save you!

Riquet: I didn’t ask! If you use too much magic your heart will be consumed…

You could lose your mind and die! Don’t you understand!?

Mitile: I know that! But right now we’re in an emergency situation, so I have to use it whether I like it or not!

You too Riquet, why’d you go off on your own!? You have barely any mana left!

Are you telling me to shut up and leave you so you can get turned into stone!?

Riquet: I am!

Mitile: Huuuh!?

Riquet: Leave me alone! I’ll make do by myself!

I’d rather that than you turning into stone for my sake, I’d hate, hate, hate it…!

Mitile: Then…!! …

…, …*breathe* …Haah…

…I didn’t come after you just to fight. What I wanted to say is…

I’m worried about you.

I know you’re worried about me too.

So…thanks.

Riquet: …Mitile…

Mitile: It’s as you’ve heard Riquet. I mustn't use too much magic.

…but I…instead of hearing you say things like “I’m worried, so don’t you do anything”...

I want to hear you say “I’m worried, so let’s do this together”. I want you to tell me to try harder.

Riquet:

Mitile: I know it’s not very Southern wizard-like of me. I know it’s different to who I was before.

…I know that you probably hate this kind of me…

But you’re my first friend I’ve made at the manor, the one I’m always with.

You’re the only one I want to hear say “It’s dangerous, but I know you can do it. It’s not safe, but you must fight.”

Riquet:

…I know that.

I know the words that you want me to say.

I know that you’ve always been trying your hardest, before you ate that mana stone and after.

I know that you’re a brave wizard who would risk his life to save me if I just asked you to.

Because you’re always with me.

Mitile: …Riquet…

Riquet: …But…that’s why…

I’m worried about you.

You’re the person I want to be the most safe. To never risk his life.

I’ve come to care for you so much because we’re always together, but I’ve also become scared.

…I want to go on adventures with you, yet when I think of you getting hurt I lose all the strength in my legs…

Mitile, you’re my very first…and precious friend…

So if anything happened to you, I…even I…

…h, I feel like my heart would burst…

Mitile:

Riquet: …Even so...

…will you fight by my side, for a little longer?

Mitile: …!

…Of course. Let’s put our all into it, Riquet!

Mitile & Riquet: …!?

Mitile: There’s cucaruccas coming at us from every direction!

Riquet: And there’s more of them than before! Why…!?

Mitile: N-Nevermind that, we gotta run! They’ll get us at this rate…!

Riquet: Haah, haah…Sanretea Edif!

Mitile: Scintilla! …

Haa, haaaugh…! No matter how much we fend off their numbers aren’t decreasing one bit!

Riquet: Right, it’s more like they’re increasing…

Mitile: …Scintilla!

…? Scintilla! Ortonik Sealsispilce!

Riquet: Mitile! Don’t tell me, you’re at your limit…

Mitile: I’m fi…Riquet!! Behind you!!

Riquet:  Huh? A, Aaaaaaahhh…!!

Mitile: Scintilla!!

Riquet: Sanretea Edif…!

…I casted a blinding spell. It’s just for a short while, but the cucaruccas shouldn’t be able to find us for now…

Thank you Mitile.

Mitile: …Ah…

…Hehe.

Riquet: Mitile? Why the laugh…

Mitile: Haha…aha.

Ahahaha! Aahahaha!!

Riquet: What’s wrong!? Miti…

Mitile: Kyahahahahaha! Geheeheeheehee!!

Aahahahahaha!

Riquet: Mitile!!

(What do I do, what do I do, what do I do! Mitile’s acting strange!)

(Is he being consumed by the stone…!?)

Mitile: Keeheeheehee! Geehahaha!

Riquet: Mitile, come to your senses! Mitile!

(O God, I ask for your help! Please save him, save Mitile, Mitile…!)

(Please, come back!)

(I don’t want to lose you…!)

Mitile…!

Mitile: …! Ah, hand…?

Riquet: …! Are you back to normal!?

Mitile: …? Hm, hmhm, hahahaha…!

Riquet: Mitile, Mitile! I’m holding your hand. Don’t lose yourself.

Mitile, you’ll be okay won’t you?

Mitile: …Riquet…

Ahaha! Hah…

Aha…h, …h! …

…Sorry. I think…I’m okay.

Riquet: Mitile! …Oh thank goodness…

You really mustn’t use magic now. Leave the rest to me.

Mitile: No…no! You’re almost at your limit now. There’s gotta be another way…

…Right…I put it in my pocket…

…! Here!

Riquet: That? What is it…

Mitile: Our ace. Riquet, I’ve thought up a plan to outrun those caterpillars.

I want you to cast a tornado around us.

Can you still cast wind spells?

Riquet:

If you’re holding my hand, then surely.

Mitile: Riquet…

Of course. We’re together ‘til the end.

I’ll explain. The plan is…

Mitile: Haah, haah…okay, let’s enact it here.

Riquet: Got it. Let them come to us first…

Mitile & Riquet:

Riquet:

Mitile. I want to tell you something, just in case.

Thank you for being my…

Mitile: Don’t say it.

Riquet: But…

Mitile: It’ll be…it’ll definitely be okay. Don’t speak like it’s our last moments.

Riquet: …Mitile…

Mitile: Let’s hold hands, Riquet. It’s almost time.

Riquet: …Yes! I’m ready when you are!

Mitile: Then, now!

(First I gotta take off the cork on my bottle of pesticide.)

(Then I’ll aim it at the ceiling, as high as I can…)

(...and throw it!)

The pesticide’s up! Riquet!

Riquet:

…Sanretea Edif.

Mitile & Riquet: …!

Riquet: Look at that! The pesticide sprayed from the tornado is working on the cucaruccas!

Mitile: Yeees! Even if they are magic beasts, they still are caterpillars…!

Riquet, this is our last chance! Time to find Lord Oz…

Akira: Mitile! Riquet!

Mitile & Riquet: …! Master Sage!?

The cucaruccas wriggled in anguish, like a living snowfield with rippling waves.

In the center of the pure white ring, I saw two wizards hand in hand, eyes widened. I thought I might cry out of relief.

They were beaten up, but safe.

They managed to survive this horrible night.

Chloe: We’ve found you…!

Snow: You’re safe now.

White: Leave the rest to us.

Snow & White: Noscomnia!

Cain: You did your best, you two! Gladius Procella!

Owen: Quare Morito.

Ice, a swinging sword, and the spirits of beasts, tear apart the revolting white waves surrounding Mitile and Riquet.

With my hand in his and a staff in the other, Oz speedily approached the two.

His heels stamped and scattered the dying caterpillars, as he made his way to a spaced out Mitile and Riquet.

Chapter 8

Akira: (It’s because of those two I still have energy to run. If it’s a short distance I should be able to outrun them.)

(I’ll open the door, and make a dash for it.)

(I’ll make it to where Oz and the twins are!)

The door hinge shook slightly, and I shoved it open with two hands.

I almost tumbled onto the floor exiting.

Akira: Mitile! Riquet! O…

All I could see were hundreds of white caterpillars filling my vision.

The two who were screaming were not in sight.

Neither the three who were supposed to be approaching.

It was all fake.

Akira: …, ah…

I lost all the strength in my legs, and slumped to the floor.

Run. Get out.

Something in my head was telling me to, but my body wouldn’t listen.

Akira: (I’m, such an idiot…I was completely tricked.)

(...But, at least this means Mitile and Riquet are safe. Thank goodness…)

(...I guess this is how I die…)

My thoughts became disordered.

Strangely, tears weren’t flowing.

The caterpillars came closer to their weak and magic-less prey.

Akira: (...Mitile said to believe in him…)

I simply watched the white wave that was about to envelop me.

Riquet: (...I can see Mitile in the distance…that must be the cucarucca that was chasing us earlier.)

…!

(The caterpillars changed from Mitile to Cain! H-How gross…!!)

(The spells we cast on that room aren’t perfect. I need to grab the cucarucca’s attention so it won’t notice them.)

(I have to protect Mitile…)

…You’re fine. You can do this, you can do this…

Mitile: Riquet!

Riquet: …!? Mitile!?

Why are you here…! Did you chase after me?

Mitile: Riquet! Do our best!

Riquet: …Mitile? You’re acting…

Mitile?: Let’s do this! I won’t leave Riquet alone.

Riquet: A fake…!

Stand down, foul beast! Sanretea Edif!

…h, I messed up! What do I do, my magic is…

Waaah…!

Mitile: Haa, haa…! Riquet, where did you go? I can’t sense his mana…

Ugh! Why would you go off on your own in a place like this!

Treating me like I’m deadweight! Just ‘cuz you’re worried about me…

(It’s the complete opposite with the Ruins of Mesa. He got mad and called us cowards for not going inside the ruins.)

(But…he later apologized. Saying that though he couldn’t understand the Southern wizard’s feelings, he loves our good nature.)

(If the me now went to the Ruins of Mesa then, I think I would have gone inside with the Central wizards.)

(I can use awesome magic now. I would’ve been helpful, and done a lot.)

(Is this not very Southern-like of me? Will he hate me for not being good natured?)

(...But…)

Riquet is…

Riquet is the only…

Riquet: –Stand down, foul beast! Sanretea Edif!

Mitile: …! Riquet! He’s being attacked by a cucarucca…!

Riquet: Waaah…!

Mitile: Scintilla!

That was bad…! Riquet, you alright!?

Riquet:

…Mitile…

Akira: …Ah…

Snow & White: Noscomnia!

O Sage!

Oz: Are you unharmed!

Akira: Snow, White! Oz…!

The frozen cluster of caterpillars broke into pieces with a crash.

The remaining cucaruccas that weren’t hit by the spell were sent into a panic, their escape being deterred by the three wizards rushing over here.

At that moment, like a knot had come undone, warm tears bursted from my eyes.

Oz hurried to my side, holding the picture frame of the twins, and bent down on his knee.

Oz: Sage. Are you hurt?

Akira: No…thanks, you three.

Snow: It’s a relief we made it in time. Good thing we ran, right Ozzy?

White: There there, it must’ve been quite the scare. Why are you alone, though? Where have Mitile and Riquet gone?

Oz: Were you separated? Are they safe?

Akira: That’s…

Rapidly wiping my tears, I told them about what happened thus far.

Akira: But then I heard these noises and screaming outside. It sounded like Mitile and Riquet were being attacked and eaten by the cucaruccas…

I was panicking about what to do, and then I heard your voices…so I…

…h, I believed in those voices…thinking I could reunite with you guys and save them…

Oz: …Except it was all a trap.

Akira: Yes…

I stared at the floor.

Recalling the events made me realize how careless I was.

Akira: …Mitile told me to not open that door. To believe in him and wait.

I should’ve listened to his words no matter what.

…I wasn’t able to believe in him, so that’s why…

Snow: Stop, Sage. That is not it.

I lifted my head to Snow’s kind admonishing. He leaned in close.

Snow: Your frustrations are clouding your vision. What made you open that door was not your failure to believe in your friends.

It was your courage and camaraderie to them that did.

Akira: Snow…

Snow: Disbelief and concern are similar, but still different.

You could have kept Mitile’s words in mind and stayed in that room, disregarding their fates.

Except you think so dearly of him and Riquet that you couldn’t. That’s how I see things went.

You did a great job, even though it was scary. What a courageous child.

He caressed my cheek, wiping the tears I missed.

That hand from the painting looked a little transparent like the shadow of the moon, yet it was still warm.

Snow’s confident words dispelled the despair and regrets I had when I opened that door.

It filled me with the strength to stand up.

Akira: …Thank you so much, Snow. I tried my best, even if it didn’t go well.

Snow: Ohohoho. That’s our Sage.

Cain: –Master Sage! Everyone!

Akira: Cain! You guys!

He was running while waving his hand. Chloe and Owen were with him.

Owen was the only one on his broom, probably because he didn’t like running. Odd coloured eyes had their sharpness back in them.

Akira: (That’s Owen alright…he’s back to normal.)

Oz: …Are you real.

Owen: Are you real? Should I let my dogs have a bite and see?

Cain: Oh good, we’re all the real ones. That was a proper conversation just now.

Snow: Was it?

White: Are proper conversations even normal for these two?

Chloe: I’m glad you’re okay! Where’s Mitile and Riquet?

Oz: We still have yet to regroup. The moment we find them I will burn these cucaruccas to ashes.

Sage, your hand.

Akira: Yes…!

I took the hand that was offered to me, and Oz silently stared into my eyes.

Oz:

Do not ever let go.

Without you by my side, I…

Red eyes wavered ever so slightly.

I remembered the words Cain once said to me.

“He may have lived for thousands of years, but not being able to use magic at night is new for him.”

The time he’s been afflicted with this injury is the same amount of time that Mitile and Riquet have been the Sage’s wizards.

Akira: …I won’t.

If I’m with you, you’ll always be the world’s strongest wizard.

I tightly squeezed his hand.

The Sage’s power is not omnipotent. It can fail, like how it cannot stop the flames of Shylock’s heart.

I ignored the cracks in my confidence.

I muster all the strength I have in me to smile.

Just like Mitile, who is now fighting somewhere in this mausoleum, did.

Akira: Oz. Let’s save Mitile and Riquet.

Oz:

Though it was just a tiny bit, I could tell the hand in mine squeezed back.

Those eyes that looked into mine were that of the world’s strongest wizard, the one who watched over us for countless missions.

Oz: We will.

Chloe: …! Look, the cucaruccas are moving!

Chapter 7

Riquet: Anyways Mitile, you need to stay here. Master Sage, I’ll be going now.

Akira: Wai…

Mitile: Wait…Riquet!

…Geez! Riquet you dummy! Won’t even listen to me one bit!!

Watching where Riquet ran off to, Mitile stomped his feet in frustration.

I hurriedly searched for the right words to say, but nothing came out. That was because I didn’t really understand their conversation.

I know more about magic now, but I still have yet to truly understand their innate relationship between the heart and magic.

Mitile:

Before I could say anything, Mitile squeezed his fists tight.

Mitile: …I can’t use too much magic. I know that.

I know that, but…

He strongly bit his lip for a second, and he turned to look at me, a determined look in his eyes.

Mitile: I won’t leave Riquet alone.

I’m going to find Riquet, and like I said before, reunite with Lord Oz. Until then, please hide in here, Master Sage.

Make sure not to open the door.

Akira: …I understand. Please, take care…

My voice trembled a bit,

since it could be the last time we saw each other.

Yet Mitile gave me a bright smile and a nod like he didn’t notice a thing.

Even though he’s the one who’s hurt and worn out, about to dive into the darkness to save his friend and fulfill his duty.

Even though his legs that carried him so far have started to shake ever so slightly.

Mitile: We will find Lord Oz and make everything alright.

Please believe in us and wait!

With all the willpower I could muster, I gave a wide smile.

For the kind and brave wizard who smiled for me.

Akira: I believe in you two. You can do this!

Mitile: Yes!

Oz:

Snow: Oz? Why did you stop?

Oz: Quiet. …, …

…It’s hard to tell with the presence of the bugs, but I can sense traces of magic in that direction. Incomplete spells, elaborately layered atop each other…

White: …, …Oh! You’re right! It’s faint, but there certainly is something!

Snow: Could it be Mitile and Riquet’s magic? Good job, Oz! Now we can unite!

The Trio: …!

Snow: The cucaruccas are crawling over there too.

White: Heinous beasts, so you’ve picked up the scent too…Oz, we must hurry!

Oz: Of course.

(Mitile, Riquet…)

(...Akira…)

Akira: (...)

(...It sure is dark…)

Now alone in the small room, I carefully sat myself down on the floor to calm my nerves.

I couldn’t tell if my eyes were open or closed in this pitch black darkness.

I was paranoid that the monsters would be able to hear the loud thumping of my heart.

Akira: (...Don’t worry. It’ll be okay. It’ll all go well…)

(Mitile and Riquet are best friends. I am worried about Riquet, but if they talk it out they’ll surely make up.)

(They’ll be able to find Oz sooner without me weighing them down. And they’re definitely searching for me too.)

(So it’s gonna be okay. It’ll be fine, fine…)

Mitile & Riquet: …Master Sage!

Akira: …! Mitile, Riquet!

I almost jumped trying to stand up. I quickly put my hands on the door.

Akira: You already found Oz! That was fa–

(...Right. Isn’t that too fast?)

(The darkness may be messing with my sense of time, but I’m sure it wasn’t that long since I parted with Mitile.)

(And, if Oz is with them why isn’t he saying anything?)

(...Is it really Mitile and Riquet?)

Riquet: Master Sage.

Mitile: Are you okay?

I strained my ears to listen to their voices clearly,

but those worried voices sounded so real to me.

Akira: (Maybe there was trouble and they had to come back to me. Maybe hours have already passed. It’s normal for Oz to be silent too…)

I felt so alone and hopeless in this darkness. It made me want to open the door even more.

Akira: (...But, if they were really real…)

(They would’ve undone their own spells and opened the door by themselves, before talking to me.)

(Right, these must be fakes. I mustn’t open this door, just like Mitile said!)

As soon as I made my decision and backed away from the door,

I could hear the rustling sounds of caterpillars crawling faster than I’ve ever heard until now.

Without even a second to think, something slammed against the door with a loud thud.

It was the sound of something large and soft hitting the door.

Like a human.

Riquet: Aaaaah!!

Mitile: Riquet! …Waaaaugh!

Akira: Mitile!? Riquet!?

Riquet: Waaaah, …ah! Agh, …, …!!

Mitile: Aaaah, gh, …, ahhhhh…!!

Akira: What’s going on!? Are you okay!?

All I could hear were Mitile and Riquet’s shrieking and crying voices.

And something heavy being battered without end.

Those two were being shoved and beaten.

Broken, squashed, shredded, torn, mushed…

Akira: …h, Mitile!! Riquet!! Please answer me!!

It can’t be real…it’s all fake, right!? None of this is real right!? Give me an answer, please, please, please, please…!

In a craze I pounded the door. Words spilled from my throat without me realizing.

My vision flickered. I thought I might barf going numb with fear.

Akira: (No, no, NO! It’s not real! It’s fake, it’s fake, it’s fake, it’s all fake!)

(I’ve seen these tricks in horror movies…! I mustn’t open the door!)

(I mustn’t, I won’t……but, but…)

(This isn’t a movie.)

(It’s reality.)

(What if beyond this door was Mitile and Riquet?)

(What if they really were being attacked?)

Riquet: Gaah…h,...h! Nn, aaah…

Mitile: Riquet, Riquet! Riquet!! Ri…h, waaaaah…!

I couldn’t stop shaking at their painful wailing. I thought my heart would crush from agony.

My head felt light, and I was getting dizzy, but I desperately continued to think.

Akira: (I didn’t hear any stones breaking. They’re still alive.)

(If those two really are being attacked…)

(I could leave these room, and let those two run away while the cucaruccas go after me.)

(..., but. If they’re fakes…)

Mitile: Master Sage!

I return to my senses. The voice was right behind this door.

My kind and brave wizard whispered to me in a hushed voice that sounded like it could cut off at any moment.

Mitile: Make sure not to open the door.

Ah, ah…uu, uuu…

Spongy chewing noises entered my ears, along with Mitile’s sobbing.

I could only imagine the worst happening behind that door.

Akira: (...He’s being eaten, alive…)

I rejected the images that tried to come to mind in my despair.

In that moment however, a light shined.

And from far away I could slightly pick up someone’s voice.

Snow: –kids…aren’t anywhere.

Akira: …!

White: Nor…Cain…others…

Oz: …This maus…is like…th.

Akira: Snow! White! Oz…!!

I cling to the door, shouting the names of the wizards we’d been searching for.

They didn’t reply, but I could hear their voices come closer.

The sounds of the cucaruccas devouring and attacking fell silent.

It could be that they were feeling wary at the presence of powerful wizards.

If I take this chance I could reunite with Oz and the twins.

I could give the Mitile who was being eaten alive and the Riquet who was torn apart a second longer to live.

Chapter 6

Owen: Pant, pant…Uu, I’m tired…

Cain: …Ha, ha…shit. To think the cucarucca would transform into Chloe…

(We managed to shake them off, but there might be no next time. Owen can’t run anymore.)

(To beat a cluster of cucarucca we have to kill the whole body in one strike. I don’t have that level of magic, though…)

(Relax! Take your time and think. Our goal is to return home with everyone. What we need to make that happen is to reunite the Master Sage and Oz.)

(Okay then, what’s my best move? What is it I should do right now?)

Owen: …Sir Knight…

Cain: (...What can I do to protect a frightened child?)

Owen: Sir Knight? Why did you let go of my hand…?

Cain: Owen. Calm down, and listen to my words.

From here on we’re gonna move separately.

I’ll stay here, so you go and find Oz. Help him out.

We won’t be able to leave this place for a while, but Oz will protect you.

Owen: N…No…gh! I want to stay with you!

I, I won’t say I’m tired anymore! I’ll be a good kid, so…kh.

Cain: That’s not it. I want you to get away safely so I’m gonna stall the…

Owen: No! Don’t wanna! Sir Knight is a l-liar!

You said you wouldn’t leave me…!

Cain:

…You remember that. Even though you don’t have most of your adult memories…

Owen.

Owen: W-What…?

Cain: Look at me please. Look straight into my eyes.

Owen. For me to not leave you in the true sense, this needs to happen.

It sucks, but I can’t win against those monsters, and there’s a limit to how much we can run.

So I’m going to trust you with my hope. That you will survive.

Owen: …To survive…

Cain: Knights don’t fight alone. Against a tough opponent, we believe in our victory and do our part to the fullest.

And this is my part.

I’m going to leave my hope with you, and in the end I will come back for you.

Owen:

You’re going to leave your hope, with me…

Gh…!

Cain: Crap, they found us!

Owen, run! I’ll…

Cerberus!? Owen…

Owen: Tear them apart.

Tch…a lot of them got away. These dogs suck at squashing smaller beasts.

Cain: You’re…back to normal. Honestly, that’s a relief.

Owen: Hmph. …

Cain: …What? If you’re gonna complain, complain to yourself who stuffed those guys into your trunk.

Owen: No. Before…

You said you were going to leave your hope with me.

Cain: …Yeah. You remember.

Owen: That’s…no, I…

Cain:

Owen: …Are you okay with that?

Cain:

…I’m…

Chloe: Cain! Owen!?

Cain: Chloe…!? Wait…

Chloe: Woahwoahwoah! Don’t point your sword at me! I’m the real one!

Wait, but are you two the real ones? Or fake!?

Oh I know, Owen, can I hug you!?

Owen: What’re you doing, you idiot!

Cain: What’re YOU doing!? He’s clearly the real Chloe!

Chloe: Owie…ouchie ouch…

Cain: You alright, Chloe? Did you hit your head?

Chloe: I’m A-Okay! Sorry for startling you.

But seriously, I’m glad you pushed me away. Thanks, Owen!

Owen & Cain: Hm?

Chloe: Just earlier, I thought I found Owen. So out of relief I hugged him without thinking, and he just hugged me back like it was normal!

I was like, wait, he can do that? And then the Owen in my arms turned into caterpillars! It was mega scary!

The real Owen should push you away if you tried to hug him. That’s the right reaction, yep! I was so relieved~...

Owen: Hey Mr. Knight, are you sure he didn’t hit his head?

Cain: I’m sure…well, either way, it’s good we’re all okay.

We should move together. That way we won’t be fooled by more tricks.

And now that Owen’s…in a good mood, we don’t have to run around anymore. Let’s search for Riquet and the others, and protect them.

Then all we gotta do is reunite Oz and the Master Sage, and Oz will end this nightmare. Capisce?

Owen: I guess.

Chloe: Mmhmm. I hope the Master Sage and the others are safe…

Akira: Pant, haah…hg…

I took in deep breaths searching for oxygen.

We had just taken a sneak attack from the cucarucca, and were sent on a massive chase.

Akira: (We shook them off thanks to Riquet and Mitile’s magic but…)

There was still no sign of Oz. All we could find were cucaruccas transformed into our friends.

Riquet: …We must, bring the Master Sage, to Oz, at once…

Mitile: …but, we’re, so…

I could see how pale they were.

Exhausted faces a vivid reminder of when they fought the minotaurus, I understood why even without magic.

Akira: (...They’re almost at their limit…)

I could feel the fear and uneasiness creep up from my toes.

If we were found by a cucarucca without any mana left, we’d have no way of fending them off.

We had hardly any stamina left to keep running until the sun rose or we found Oz.

Akira: (We have to do something. But what…)

Mitile: …Master Sage.

There’s a small room with a door over there and no webs. Please hide in that room.

Riquet and I will go find Lord Oz and bring him to you.

Akira: No, I can’t be the only one hiding…

I shook my head right away, but suddenly realized what would lie next.

Their raspy breaths, the sweat on their foreheads, their hoarse voices from saying their spell too much. The cuts they had all over, stained with blood.

The only reason why I was unwounded out of the three of us was because Mitile and Riquet had been protecting me.

Akira: (If I stay with them, they’ll have to keep on fighting to protect me.)

(I can’t have them using any more magic than they should…)

…I understand. I’m sorry that I can’t be of help.

Mitile: Don’t be. This is our duty.

Here, go inside.

Akira: …It’s dark…

Mitile: Even if you’re afraid, please don’t light any flames. Bugs are sensitive to light.

Riquet and I will cast all the blessing and protection spells we know, so they won’t find you.

Ortonik Sealsispilce.

Your turn, Riquet.

Riquet: …Sanretea Edif.

Mitile: …Once this door closes, you will be safe.

The spells will break if you open the door from the inside though, so please do not leave until we come for you.

Riquet, let’s go.

Riquet:

Mitile: Riquet?

He finally raised his face.

His vacant eyes suddenly held an intense light in them, concentrated on Mitile.

It was an unstable light, like when a cat jumped into the middle of the road, eyes frozen in fear at the car in front of it.

Riquet: …Mitile, you should stay in there too. I alone will search for Oz.

Akira: What!?

Mitile: Wh…huuuh!? What’re you saying all of a sudden!

Riquet: Do not worry. My magic is stronger than yours, Mitile.

Mitile: Ah…are you trying to tell me I’ll just be deadweight!? That’s mean, Riquet!

You know I’ve become stronge…

Riquet: That’s why you can’t come!

His shout was closer to a scream.

Small hands gripped Mitile’s shoulders, shaking them.

Riquet: You can’t use too much magic, Mitile! Hasn’t Figaro warned you of this?

Don’t you know what being consumed by a mana stone is?

If you do, then you should understand what I’m saying, right!? Listen to me!

Mitile: But…, …

He looked like he wanted to say something, but swallowed his breath in shock.

Because Riquet was crying.

Pristine tear drops flowed down his cheeks, mixed with the blood from his cuts, and continued without end.

Pain coloured tears were repeatedly wiped with the back of his hand.

He didn’t have any magic left to clean his cuts or tears.

Riquet: …h. The cucaruccas are coming close…

Chapter 5

Twins in the Painting: Mmmng…

White: Yeah, I’m out!

Snow: Wakey wakey Oz. Noscomnia!

Oz:

…I…right, magic beasts came out of the trunk…

Where is everyone? I don’t see Cain or Chloe, nor Owen.

Snow: They ran away. I can’t sense their mana very well, but they should all be on the run from those caterpillars…the cucarucca.

White: Owen went with them, but in that state…I wonder if he’ll be any help.

Oz: What is this ‘Cucarucca’ you speak of. I’ve never heard of it.

Snow: They are a species we made extinct from before you were born.

White: Though each individual caterpillar had weak mana, there were so many of them you couldn’t count, and together they would hunt and kill humans. Truly a beast to be feared.

What’s more, those caterpillars…

Cain: Here! Move those legs, we’re running!

Snow: Cain!?

Oz: Vox…!

White: Stop, Oz!

Snow: Do not use magic!

Snow & White: …This is…

Cain: Don’t get close! Move, run!

…h, aaaaaaugh…!

Snow & White: Noscomnia!

Cain?: Gaaaaugh…! Gaaaah…aaaaaaaaaaaah…

Oz: Cain became a cluster of caterpillars…so they have the power of mimicry.

Snow: Exactly. We dispelled their imitation, and now they’re running away with their cluster.

White: Ew…it never fails to make me sick to see a face we know crumble into a bunch of maggots.

Snow: If someone you knew came running to you bleeding and asking for help, anyone would feel disturbed and err in judgement.

White: …That craftiness is the most troublesome part about these magic beasts.

Snow: The cucarucca can perfectly transform themselves to people or animals and parrot the words they hear.

And with the voice they stole they can let out screams of death, harming themselves to appear bloodied, all to despicably fool you even more.

White: Not just humans, even Northern wizards had been fooled and fallen prey to them.

Which was why when we were more youthful and energetic than now, we went around the North killing them all…

Snow: Though it seems they’ve revived due to the Great Calamity’s influence.

Oz:

……

Snow & White: Woah woah woah…!?

Snow: Wait Ozzy!

White: Watch how you hold the frame!

Oz: We must find Riquet and Mitile at haste. I will borrow the Sage’s power and exterminate these beasts.

If they can eat Northern wizards, then younger wizards and humans do not stand a chance.

…Those three are honest and goodhearted. They won’t doubt mimics.

Let us hurry.

Riquet: Haa, haa…!

Mitile: Keep at it, Riquet! They’re still after us!

Oz?:

Akira: Those caterpillars have transformed into Oz too…!

We were running for our lives from the cucaruccas that were constantly crawling after us.

Just before this at the end of a pathway we’d spotted Oz. I was relieved from the bottom of my heart, but holding his hand was a mistake.

I still remember how wrong it felt.

Oz’s hand was cold and sodden.

The moment I pulled my hand back, he silently stared at me like the real Oz would, but in his eyes I could spot a caterpillar creep out.

Those gruesome monsters would then keep turning into Oz and breaking down, all while chasing us at a speed unbelievable for a caterpillar.

Mitile: …Ugh, take this! Scintilla!

Oz?: n…

Mitile: I did it! I casted the inextinguishable flame spell! I can toast these magic beasts…!

…er, they’re still after us!

Akira: I see a huge pillar at the end of this pathway! Maybe we can hide in its shadow…!?

Riquet: Alri...n-no, we can’t! It’s wrapped in webs!

Mitile: How about that stone statue over there? There’s no webs on it!

I’ll blind their eyes…

Riquet: I will do it! Sanretea Edif!

Now is our chance! Let’s hurry…!

We dashed behind the crumbling stone statue, killing our breaths and huddling close together.

As the flash of light dissipated, the cucarucca that had transformed into Oz slowly turned their heads left and right, reminding me of a hairy caterpillar when it felt threatened.

In the end, the white caterpillars crumbled their forms and scattered down the pathways.

Akira: …Haa…we’re safe, for now…

Are you two okay?

Mitile: Y-Yes, somehow…

Riquet:

Akira:

Riquet: Ah…yes, I’m fine.

He nodded in a panic. Contrary to his words, he was definitely spacing out.

On a face full of sweat, eyes that were normally courageous were now vacantly blinking.

Akira: Are you really okay? You look exhausted…

Mitile: You’re running out of mana aren’t you? Riquet, you’ve been using too much magic.

You even casted a blinding spell when I was going to. If you keep pushing yourself you’ll run out of mana…

Riquet: I won’t!!

Riquet’s voice echoed throughout the mausoleum.

I could hear the rustling of cucaruccas in the distance.

But rather than fear, surprise took over me.

Riquet isn’t one to lose his temper and shout from his friend worrying over him.

Mitile: …Riquet? Is something wrong?

He talked in a soft voice. Riquet quickly covered his mouth, crouching lower in embarrassment.

Riquet: I’m so sorry, I…but I really am fine.

There is nothing you need to worry about, Mitile. Really…nothing.

Akira: (...There is something. Anyone could tell he’s not himself right now.)

(Is it the fear of the cucarucca? Nervous that Oz and Cain aren’t with him? Usually he’d still be brave though…)

Mitile: …Riquet…

Riquet quickly stood up, as if to interrupt Mitile from saying anything.

Riquet: My apologies. Because I raised my voice, the cucaruccas might come to us now.

Sitting around won’t help us find the real Oz, so let’s get moving.

Mitile:

He starts walking with haste. Mitile follows after him with a troubled expression.

Snow: The kids aren’t anywhere.

White: Nor are Cain and the others.

Oz: …This mausoleum is like a labyrinth.

Why did we choose this space for the training session?

Snow: Huuuh~?? Before this all happened you were all like “Oh looks good” about this place weren’tcha!

White: Stop, you two! We don’t have time for squabbles.

If we fight here, the younger wizards will be turned to stone before the sun rises.

Snow & Oz:

Snow: Oz, you should say “Sorry” here. Then I shall reply “It’s okay”.

Oz: You say it.

White: Ugh!! Keep at it for the rest of your lives then! Idiots!!

Snow: Sorry sorry sorry! I won’t do it anymore! I’ve turned over a new leaf!

*breathe* Haa…let’s change the topic…

Right, speaking of fights, the state of Mitile’s heart worries me. This is certainly no situation to be pointlessly fighting.

That child has consumed a mana stone far stronger than him. Though Figaro is looking after him…

He doesn’t seem to be following the rule of not using too much magic.

Now that we’re in this mess, there’s no doubt that he will ignore the strains on his heart and keep on using magic. I can only hope that the stone won’t devour him…

White: That’s true…at least we can have some relief that Riquet’s with him.

Magic is used with a clear mind. With a trusted friend by your side, it is easier to keep one’s head and maintain your sense of self.

Oz:

The other day…

I was asked by Riquet if there was any way he could help Mitile should he be consumed by the mana stone.

I told him that there was no way to help him.

Snow & White: …!

Snow: So…as of now, Riquet is fighting thinking his best friend is going to turn into stone?

White: …That changes things…he must be thinking that he has to resolve this all by himself.

Oz:

Snow: …You too, Oz. Calm down.

Oz: I am calm.

Snow: How? Walking hastily like that.

Accept it. Though you pride yourself as the world’s strongest, there is nothing you can do now.

White: Snow. Stop. I told you no fighting.

Snow: I am not. I am merely telling my student the truth.

We who are stuck to this painting are the same. We can’t do anything, it’s best to accept the truth then deny it.

Oz:

…That’s why I’m hurrying. If I can take the Sage’s hand…

Snow: You can use magic at night.

…However, the current you is the same as a mere human. Should you stumble over on your high heels you could not heal yourself with magic.

So calm your nerves. Accept your powerless and human-like self.

Oz:

……

Chapter 4

The red blood the slain caterpillar sucked spread throughout its cluster, and disappeared as if it was swallowed.

Just as I was frozen at the sight of what appeared like one large creature, the caterpillars parted into several clusters.

Now it was as if each cluster was its own individual creature, all wriggling for different directions with a rustling noise.

A few clusters rushed towards a paralyzed Chloe and sword wielding Cain like a deluge.

Twins in the Painting: Cain, Chloe! Take Owen and run!

Snow in the Painting: These monsters are man-eating beasts we made extinct ages ago, the Cucarucca!

White in the Painting: They’re clever and abominable magic beasts who exist in clusters with a natural instinct to go after the weakest ones first!

Snow in the Painting: Now that they’ve sucked Owen’s blood, neither you nor we can contend with them!

White in the Painting: Leave Oz and us behind for now, you three must start running!

Chloe: I…I got it! Keep safe, you guys!

Cain: This way, Chloe! Owen, we’re gonna run now, with me!

Owen: Sniff…o-okay…!

Snow in the Painting: Mitile, Riquet! Did you hear that!?

White in the Painting: This is no beast you can handle. You must take the Sage and flee…

–There, like it was blotted black with darkness, the snowman shaped window disappeared.

The Three of Us:

We looked at each other and immediately dashed for the entrance.

However…

Akira: It, it won’t open!?

Mitile: There’s sticky web-like stuff all over the doors…don’t tell me, those caterpillars have already made their way here…!

Riquet: Then let’s break the door down with magic!

Sanretea Edif!

Mitile: Ortonik Sealsispilce!

Akira: It won’t even budge…!

Mitile: It’s being enhanced by Lord Oz’s barrier! Sure it’s tough enough that a dragon won’t be able to bust it, but that also means no one inside can leave…!

Riquet: It, it’ll be fine! Let’s calm down, you two.

Even if we can’t deal with our pursuers, we just don’t have to get caught by them.

If they are caterpillars that crawl on the ground, we can fly on brooms to not let them catch us. So, let’s pull out our brooms…

Mitile: …Ah, ah…that’s…

As soon as Riquet said those words, Mitile, who was looking at the ceiling, widened his eyes. His knees wobbled, and he shrunk back in fear.

When we followed his line of sight there was a herd of pure white bats crawling on the ceiling not too far from us.

–My gut told me those were cucaruccas.

Even on brooms we wouldn’t be able to escape them.

Riquet & Akira: …h…

Akira: (Nothing’s there, nothing’s there, nothing’s there! Go away, go away, go away...!)

I desperately prayed in my mind as I cowered in fear.

But there was no point.

They had crawled right above us, and dangled upside down ominously.

They screeched like bats, before sniffing the air like they caught a scent–and then came dropping down altogether.

The Three of Us: Waaaaaaah…!!

Riquet: Woah!?

Mitile: Lord Oz’s compass…!

As if to stop the herd of bats, a lone compass flew out from Mitile’s pocket.

It opened its lid, and after vigorously spinning its needle, grey thunderclouds formed a thick wall around us.

Protected by a barrier of clouds, we could hear an earth splitting lightning strike.

When the clouds parted the herd of bats had become blueish ashes that scattered away.

Riquet: …Th…

The Three of Us: Thank goodness~...!

Mitile: Th-that was terrifying…so this compass was a protection charm from Lord Oz.

Akira: A powerful one at that! I’m sure we’ll be okay now with this…

Just as I spoke, the compass began forming cracks in it.

And as if it used all its power, fell onto the ground with a crash.

Akira: Ah…!

Riquet: …Looks like it was a one-time use magic tool. It wouldn’t be training with a protection charm to rely on…

B-But Mitile, don’t you carry Mithra’s protection charm on you too?

Mitile: No…I didn’t take it with me this time. It malfunctions when it senses Lord Oz’s mana…

Akira: I see…so, basically…

Riquet: …There’s nothing that can protect us now…

He lowered his voice in fear. I couldn’t breathe properly.

A darkness with no escape. A mysterious mausoleum as complicated as a labyrinth.

Stuck with a horde of man-eating monsters after us.

Mitile:

Beside me and Riquet who froze up, Mitile took numerous deep breaths.

He then slowly raised his face.

Mitile: …Riquet. Let’s take the Master Sage to where Lord Oz is.

Even when the sun sets, he should still be able to use magic if the Master Sage is there.

Within the chilling darkness, eyes the colour of fresh green leaves shone with the most confidence they could muster.

Except, Riquet weakly lowered his gaze, as if to avoid that light.

Riquet: …Can we manage that? We couldn’t even handle magic creatures weaker than us.

And…

He glanced at Mitile and hesitantly turned silent.

Normally he would straighten his back like a brave Central wizard and say something like “Nothing will stop us!”.

Akira: (What happened…now that I think about it, earlier he also seemed to be concerned about Mitile…)

Mitile’s eyebrows drooped seeing an unconfident Riquet.

Though he quickly raised his face again and looked him in the eye.

Mitile: We have to.

The Great Calamity is surely going to be stronger than these monsters.

Riquet:

…You’re right. I’m sorry, I wasn’t being myself.

Master Sage. We will definitely protect you.

The two young wizards gave me a serious face.

I nodded to those determined eyes, having made up my mind.

Akira: …Thank you. I’m relying on you two.

No map, no light.

No guardians to save us.

We squeezed each other’s feeble hands and started walking down a hall.

Cain: Guess we’ve finally outrun them. Crap, we’ve lost sight of Chloe…where…

(...Damnit, I can’t trace his mana. The mausoleum’s a mess from the presence of the bugs mixed in with Owen’s blood.)

(This…is gonna make it hard trying to sense anybody, be it the twins or Oz. That means it’ll be a battle of speed and endurance but…)

Owen. You alright?

Owen: …Sir Knigh…

Cough, cough cough! Pant, pant…blegh…

Cain: Aah right, my bad. I didn’t think about it seeing as you kept up with me, but you don’t usually run do you…

Here, I’ll rub your back. Show me the finger that was bitten.

Owen: Cough…mm…

Cain: Ah…there’s still blood on it. Poor thing, I bet it hurt.

Let me heal you. Gladius Pro…

Owen: Waahn…! No! Stop it!

Cain: Huh!? What? You okay?

Owen: My finger, it tingled.

And it was itchy itchy, I wanted to scratch it…hated it.

Cain: Did the pain and itching surprise you? Sorry, I’m not used to casting healing spells on others.

But we have to patch it up. Can you bear with the tingles and itchy itchy for me?

Owen: Uu…

Cain: It’ll be done in a jiffy, okay! See, Gladius Procella!

Owen: Tingly…itchy itchy…

Cain: …And we’re done. …

(...The Owen right now couldn’t even heal a tiny bite like that. I guess he can’t use magic very well.)

(If the cucaruccas target the weaker ones first, he shouldn’t be on the top of the list. But, what if…)

…! Damn, right around the corner is a cucarucca…!

Owen, we’re going! Run!

Owen: A-Again? How long will the ghost bugs chase us for?

I’m tired, Sir Knight…I want to leave this place now…sniff…

Cain: It’s gonna be okay. We’ll leave this place for sure.

(...I say, but how? I don’t have the magic to beat those monsters…)

Owen: …Ah…hey Sir Knight, there’s someone over there!

Cain: …! Chloe!

Chloe:

Cain: Phew, happy to see you’re alright!

Let’s hurry and make a run for it! There’s a cucarucca on our tail!

Chloe: …H-Hey…

Cain: …? What…?

Chapter 3

Cain: To be honest, I’m concerned too…but if we’re doing it, it should be today.

I know Mitile doesn’t have enough confidence in his own power, so I can imagine the delays are making him feel bad about himself.

Akira: That’s…true…

Oz:

…I will strengthen the barrier around the mausoleum. So that not even a single bug or gust of wind can come in while my and the twins’ powers are restricted at nightfall.

Vox Nox.

Akira: …And that’s why we’re here. The training session should end in the evening, so we’ll fly on brooms to the Town of Ice and sleep there for a night.

As I explained to them I quietly let out a tired sigh.

The reason we were so late with our preparations was because of Bradley and Mithra’s interference.

I thought about the unrelenting and meddlesome fights they kept picking.

Akira: (They were kinda weird today. Rather than beating up Oz or the twins it was more like they wanted to stop us…)

(And numerous times Mithra would say “Owen’s reward is…” before Bradley stopped him.)

(What could he mean by reward? Owen wasn’t there at all, so I wonder if he’s connected somehow…?)

Mitile: It’s a late start but…that means we just gotta do our best to hurry and clear it!

Let’s do this, Riquet!

Riquet: Yes!

Riquet nodded with enthusiasm, before putting on a serious face.

He was on alert from head to toe, staring at Mitile.

Riquet: …By the way Mitile, how are you feeling? Does your magic feel stable?

Mitile: …? Yeah, I’m bursting with energy!

Riquet: … I see…

Akira: (...? Riquet…?)

Snow & White: Noscomnia!

Suddenly, a snowman shaped window that reminded me of the window of roses that once appeared at Granvelle Castle, opened in the air.

Snow: Testing testing!

White: Ah ah ah–

Mitile & Riquet: It, it’s starting…!

Anxiety and anticipation in our hearts, we stared through the window with intense gazes.

Like a television showing us a broadcast, we could see a room different from the one we were in, and the twins bobbed for a peek into the window.

Behind them we could see Oz, Cain, and Chloe.

Snow: We can’t see you from here, but can you see us?

We’re currently in the innermost room of the mausoleum, the burial chamber. It’s a bit later than expected, but we have carefully finished our preparations.

White: In place of Mr. Oz who sucks at explaining, we will tell you all about the special training we have in store for you!

Chloe & Cain: Woo! *clap clap clap*

Snow: Mm, thank you for the hype. First, let us explain the itinerary.

White: To put it simply, it will be a game where you must protect the Sage while collecting candy and reach the destination.

Think of it as a step up from the treasure stealing training we did at the Ravages of Oz the other day.

Snow: Throughout the mausoleum as your opponents with candy are us twins, Cain, and Chloe.

White: You must steal the candy from each of us.

Snow: Once you’ve gathered all the candy you will make your way to the burial chamber to reunite with Oz, and it’s game clear.

White: Of course, you must have the Sage with you when you reach the final room.

Your clear objectives are 1. To have four candies, and 2. Have the Sage with you.

Snow: Your opponents will not be sitting around waiting for you. We will be constantly on the move, aiming for a chance to seize the Sage from you.

Should you concentrate on gathering candies, or focus on protecting the Sage? You must think on one’s feet.

Mitile & Riquet: Yes!

Snow: And…here, Oz. You go tell them about the compass.

Oz: …There is no map that leads to the burial chamber. Instead, you will have a compass.

Mitile: Woah! I can feel something in my pocket…!

Oz: You must go in the direction the compass points to. If in any case the compass does not work, sense my magic to find the way.

The opposition will not use attack spells. However, they may work in groups like packs of wolves when hunting.

Cain: Oh, but you two are allowed to use attack magic.

Chloe: G-Go easy on me, though!

Snow: …Anyways, don’t hold back. You are practicing against those stronger than you, so it’d be good to come at us full force.

White: Before we start, we shall take Sacrificium back, since you see it as your lifeline.

Akira: Really?

Riquet: Yes. During the training at the Ravages of Oz, we also had it staying behind, right?

Mitile: We were worried we’d take it too easy if Sakitty was with us. Though I understand if you’re nervous, Master Sage…

Akira: I’m okay! I want to be on the same wavelength with you two. It’s your special training after all.

Snow: Sage, could you hold out Sacrificium into the air? We will take it back with magic.

Akira: See you later Sakitty. Ta-da!

Sacrificium: Yawn~...

Snow: Noscomnia.

…That’s that.

Snow & White: Now then…

Owen: Hey, this looks like fun.

Snow & White: !

Chloe & Cain: Owen!?

Through the window Owen appeared all of a sudden.

While everyone was in their black training clothes, he alone was wearing his usual ghostly garb. He smiled like he was in a good mood.

Apart from Owen, we all stood on edge, guards up.

Because it’s when he’s in a good mood that the worst will happen.

Chloe: Owen…! You broke through Lord Oz’s barrier!?

Owen: I didn’t though? I’ve been here the whole time. You idiots just didn’t notice.

Snow: You cast a vanishing spell strong enough so that even we couldn’t detect it? Just what are you planning…

Owen: Hehe…Oz, Twins. Did you enjoy your playdate with Mithra and Bradley?

Oz: …You knew they came.

Owen: Of course. I was the one who asked them to.

I told them to stall you three here until sunset, that I would give a special mana stone to the one who did his very best.

And that after the sun set I would come over to play with my special toy.

Here, have a look. I’ll open my trunk for you.

Cain: Hey, stop it!

Owen: Cure Memini.

Chloe: …Uhm, bunnies?

Owen: Huh?

What hopped out of Owen’s trunk was a herd of white hares with horns growing from their heads–the North’s Horned Hare.

They were ferocious and carnivorous magic beasts, considered a danger to humans. However, they were ants compared to Oz and the Northern wizards.

The twins, watching the hopping hares, looked extremely let down.

White: Whaaat. They’re just horned hares.

Snow: Right, there’s other things in your trunk aside from Cerberus. You stuffed something in there after the Lemora trouble too.

Oz: You’re interrupting Mitile and Riquet’s training. Throw them away.

Owen: …That’s weird. I thought I’d stuffed in a hydra from the Forest of Dreams…

Chloe: H-Hey! Aren’t these bunnies kinda weird?

Cain: Well it is weird for a hydra to turn into a bunch of bunnies.

Chloe: That’s weird too, but…I wonder…I just have this bad feeling like I just looked into the eyes of a liar…

Snow: Hmmm…? If a Western wizard thinks it odd, then there must be some sort of illusion or transformation spell cast on them.

White: I’ve never heard of hydras being able to cast that kind of magic before though…

Snow & White: …No.

Unless it’s not a hydra…

Snow: …Oz, Oz! Burn these things to ashes!

White: To cinders, now!

Chloe & Cain: Huh?

Oz & Owen: …?

It was then.

The fluffy fur of the hares wriggled like worms gushing forth.

No, those really were worms, forming in a cluster.

They were a mass of unnaturally white caterpillars, enough to make an adult’s arm.

Chloe: Eeeek!?

Cain: Woah, what the!? Even our clothes…!

Oz: Vox No…

…n…

Snow: No good, it’s sun down!

White: We’re going to be inside the painting…!

White in the Painting: gh, Owen you…! You were planning to unleash a hydra on us when the sun set, right!?

Snow in the Painting: We’ll let it slide this time! You need to kill all these bugs immediately!

Owen: …Caterpillars, maggots…

White in the Painting: …Owen?

Owen: My friends inside the soggy mud…

He held out his hand to the caterpillars. That naive smile told me instantly.

Akira: (His mind’s turned into a kid, it’s his Calamity injury…!)

Cain: …! Owen, don’t go near them!

He pulled out his sword at the same moment the caterpillars leaped.

A tiny mouth bit onto Owen’s finger and chewed.

Owen: Waaah…!

Cain: Gladius Procella!

Owen, are you alright!? You’re bleeding…

Chloe: …!? The caterpillar’s mana has…!

Altogether the hundreds of caterpillars wriggled their bodies in joy.

Chapter 2

Mitile: …That was him being worried for us?

Riquet: Yes. Oz usually lets me do whatever I’d like, but after something dangerous happens he always gets like this.

Mitile nervously looked up at Oz. The area between his eyebrows was firmly creased.

Oz: It is still too early. You must focus on recovering your spirits.

Mitile: Ah…

He looked a little relieved to know that Oz wasn’t mad at him,

but his gaze quickly fell to the floor.

Mitile: …Uhm…

Oz: What is it.

Mitile: …If we were Shino or Prince Arthur, would you still have said that?

Oz: Yes.

Mitile: …Really?

Oz:

Depending on the situation and context I may reconsider.

Mitile: Is that because the two of them are powerful wizards?

Are you worried about us because we aren’t strong?

Oz:

Mitile:

Oz: …Medicines are another story.

Mitile: H-Huh?

Oz: If you were holding a weed toxic enough to kill a horse, I would not be worried.

However, if I saw Arthur or Shino even touching it, I would stop them right away.

It is the same for training.

Mitile: …Okay…

Snow & White: Oz. We agree with the idea of a trial.

Snow: If you are so worried, how about you create a safe space for them to fight.

White: It may be true that it is a bit early for Riquet to challenge a real monster or magic creature like he desires.

Snow: Except as practice it wouldn’t hurt to do some training that is harder than normal.

Oz: But…

Snow: The Great Calamity will come sooner than you expect.

White: The younger wizards need experience.

Oz:

He moved his gaze to the window.

Outside the broken window was the giant moon, gazing back as if it were having a good chuckle ridiculing us.

Eventually, he let out a sigh, and looked to the younger pair.

Oz: You will not be fighting against monsters or magic creatures.

But I will prepare a special training session for the two of you.

Mitile & Riquet: …!

Riquet: Yay!

Mitile: Thank you Lord Oz!

They took each other’s hands in joy.

Seeing them smile again felt like a lightswitch had turned on, and it was as if the entire room brightened up.

Cain: So we’re putting on a training session for them. You can be sure I’ll lend a hand.

Chloe: Me too!

Snow: We will help too.

White: As teachers ourselves we will give you a most special and fun session.

Akira: If there’s anything I can do, please count me in!

Snow: Now that we’re decided we ought to start preparing. We’ll contact you later about the date and time.

White: You’d better sit in anticipation for what kind of unique training session awaits you.

Riquet: Thank you so much! No matter what sort of training it is, we will give it our all!

Mitile, let’s do our best together!

Mitile: Yeah!

Mitile and Riquet clenched their fists tightly with power. There was a passionate fire in their similarly green eyes.

It was as though their enthusiasm and motivation suddenly burst into a roaring flame.

Heartwarmed, I take the tray off the table and bring it to them once again.

Akira: Alrighty then, with the special training session in mind it’s time to fill our stomachs! Please, have a creampuff.

Riquet: Ah, right! We wouldn’t want Nero’s creampuffs to go to waste.

Mitile: I’ll go pour the tea! For everyone here too.

Snow & White: Yaaay!

Chloe & Cain: Thanks!

The tutorial room became lively, and I quietly prayed as Mitile went to pour us tea.

Akira: (May this special training session go well…)

–Days later.

Headed by the teachers Oz and the twins, the preparations for the training session were proceeding steadily.

Riquet: Oz, have you decided on a location yet for the session?

Oz: In the North’s…

Riquet: Wait, don’t say it! It won’t be special anymore if I know.

Oz: …Then why did you ask.

Riquet: I wanted to know how the preparations were going. I was worried about its progress.

So have you decided on what it’ll be on? Oh, spare the specifics of course.

Oz: …It’s not been decided yet. I’m still discussing it with the twins, but we’re having trouble.

Mitile ate a strong mana stone, but he has yet to fully make it his own power.

The twins warn that should he exhaust his heart through excessive use of magic, he may be consumed by the stone.

Riquet: Is that so…ah, right. I just remembered something I had to ask you.

In case Mitile does get consumed by the mana stone during our training session, what should I do? Please tell me how to help him.

Oz: You can’t.

Riquet: …Huh?

Oz: If he’s lucky, he will return to his senses. If he’s not, then that’s it for him.

Should you lose your mind, you will forget yourself. There are some who lose their lives too.

Riquet: B-But…then, how…

Mi…Mitile…if he uses too much magic then…

Oz: You have no need to worry.

Part of our preparations is ensuring that will not have the slightest chance of happening.

You and Mitile both will be able to complete this training safely.

We will be watching over you.

Riquet:

Another few days passed–

Mitile: Next is the roots of this tree…hmmm, I still have a lot of pesticide left. I guess I made too much.

…We still haven’t gone on training yet. Looks like it’s not gonna be today either.

(Lord Oz and the others should be working on the training grounds. I wonder if something happened?)

(Or maybe it’s because they think I’m still not healed yet…so they’re thinking of delaying it…)

(No no, it’s no good to think like this. I wonder what the training will be like? What kind of magic will they make me work on?)

(It’s Lord Oz’s idea, so maybe there will be a lot of fighting.)

(That book of magic I saw in the library recently had a spell about inextinguishable flames. I think I could pull that off. Maybe I can try it out?)

(I’m the son of the Great Witch Tiletta. There’s gotta be tons more magic I can do. This time, I’ll show them what I can do!)

(I’ll surprise everyone! They’ll say “Wow Mitile, you’re so skilled with that attack spell!”.)

(“Even though you’re a Southern wizard, you’re so strong and amazing!”.)

Heehee, hmhmhm! Ehehehe…

…Ah…

But…

(...Shock isn’t always good. What if they think “You’re a Southern wizard, but you’re so battle hungry!” and stuff?)

(Mr. Leno and Dr. Figaro know how to fight, but they don’t often use attack spells. In the South, it’s just me who…)

(...Why should I worry? I’m me. I’m gonna be a strong and awesome Southern wizard.)

(...Though…)

…Riquet…he said he holds those who seek fighting and violence in contempt, that they’re fools.

He told me that since I’m kind and pure, fighting in good faith suits me but…

…Will he think the me now is foolish…?

…! That’s the signal to meet up!

(I was so deep in my thoughts that I didn’t finish spreading the pesticide. I want to hand it over to Dr. Figaro but…)

It rang again…there’s no time to search for him. I’ll just bring it with me to training.

Into the bottle and…done! Let’s make a dash for it!

Akira: –It’s finally time, Mitile, Riquet!

Mitile: My heart’s pounding…!

Riquet: First let’s take a deep breath and calm down…

The space for the special training session was an old mausoleum in North Country.

Once dreaded as a "Labyrinth” in the borders of the territory overseen by the twins, it now stands as a long abandoned ancient ruin.

Even though we were just at the entrance, I could feel a severe gloom coming from the eerie damp darkness.

Riquet: I thought that it wouldn’t be held at all today, you know.

Oz said that he would call us with his magic past noon when it was time, and he didn’t call us at all.

Mitile: Me too. I’d given up and went to spray pesticide in the garden.

Akira: I’d think the same if it became sunset while I was waiting…sorry about the long wait.

We were discussing postponing it too…

Oz: The sun is nearly down. Let’s not do it today, but another…

Snow & White: That will be difficult.

Snow: Spirits run rampant in these parts. The times they are calm enough for the young ones to come near are limited to a few days in a year.

White: According to our divinations, the spirits will begin raging again starting tomorrow.

Chloe: And we don’t have the time to find another perfect place to hold the session, they’ve already waited this long…

Chapter 1

It was mid-afternoon.

I took a deep breath at the entrance to the tutorial room, a tray in my hands.

Akira: (Alright. Just be natural…)

Mitile, Riquet. So you were here!

Nero made creampuffs for snacktime~!

On my shoulder Sakitty reacted with an exaggerated meow as if in a variety segment.

The two would usually rush to me with eyes sparkling at the mention of Nero’s creampuffs.

However…

Mitile: Ah…yes. Thank you very much.

Riquet: …We will partake in them later…

Mitile idly stirred a bubbling tin cauldron with his head lowered.

Riquet nodded listlessly with his chin resting on his palm.

Akira: (Mn…still no good…)

–It happened a few days ago.

Mitile and Riquet were assigned a mission to deal with some magic creatures.

They were like tiny rhinos, weak enough that even a human could drive away one or two.

The two were chosen because it seemed like a task they could handle. They were careful in their preparations and headed for the irrigation canals that the beasts were occupying…

Mitile & Riquet:

But it ended up being a bust.

The beasts charged at them, so Oz, who was accompanying them as Riquet’s teacher, sent the whole herd flying and ended the mission himself.

Akira: (It sucks when you end up failing something you thought you could do…you feel way more upset with yourself than the regular mistake…)

(Mitile even declined Figaro’s offer to tag along on the mission, saying they could handle it themselves too, so he must feel really bummed…)

They still aren’t in the mood to be excited over sweets.

Unable to find the right words to say, I place the tray of creampuffs on the table.

That’s when Sakitty started sniffing at the air like something caught its attention.

Akira: (Huh, something smells strange. It’s a weird mix of sour and burnt…)

My eyes moved to the cauldron Mitile was stirring.

Akira: Hey Mitile, what’re you making? Is it a new potion?

Mitile: No, nothing magic. I’m making a pesticide for caterpillars.

The flowerbeds in the garden had tons of caterpillars munching at their roots, so before it becomes a problem I’m gonna spray some on them.

Akira: Wow! You know how to make pesticides too?

The toxins in those chemicals are really strong, aren’t they? Like if you get the amount wrong it could be a disaster…

Mitile: It’s true that you have to be very careful with them, but handling chemicals is second nature to me.

I’ve been spraying pesticide in the yard of Dr. Figaro’s clinic too.

He sounded a little more energetic talking about his strengths. Those clouds in his green eyes cleared up a bit.

Akira: (Phew. He’s cheered up a little talking about what he’s good at.)

Just as I started feeling a little relieved–

Someone broke in through the window with a loud smash.

Riquet: Woah!

Akira: O…Owen!?

Mitile: It’s, it’s a fight…!

Mitile blew out the stove's flame in a hurry, and carried his cauldron to a corner of the room.

Suddenly, from the forcibly opened window of the tutorial room, appeared a wild Oz.

He took one look at Owen who was on the floor surrounded by broken pieces of glass, and raised his staff.

Oz: Vox No–

Chloe: Hey, wait wait!

Cain: Oz, put down your staff! I think there’s a misunderstanding!

Snow: He’s guilty! No questions!

White: Get him~!

Right when Chloe and Cain rushed into the room, the twins flew in from the window on their brooms.

The tutorial room became chaotic in a matter of seconds.

Shouting came from all four corners. With a stern look in his eyes, Riquet, who stayed calm, stood up straight.

Riquet: Silence! Can’t you see the Master Sage is disturbed?

Let’s first look at the wounded. Owen, are you alright?

Owen:

Cain: He’s passed out. Should we heal him?

Snow: Leave him be. Northern wizards hate to be patronized.

Riquet: Then we can forego the healing. Now, please explain what happened here.

Normally, I would ask the first person here in this case, but he’s currently unconscious…so let’s hear what you have to say, Oz.

Oz: …Owen stole the sweets Nero made for you two.

Mitile & Riquet: Huh?

Akira: Uhm…do you mean the creampuffs?

If so, they’re right here…

I point to the tray on the table. Oz froze in place, blinking twice.

Oz:

Snow: Aw, so he’s innocent.

White: Ya done it, Ozzy.

Oz: You two said he was guilty. To punish him.

Mitile: Uhh, so what happened exactly? How does our creampuffs being stolen lead to a whole fight?

Chloe: Well when we made a ruckus about your creampuffs disappearing, Owen just happened to be passing by with a creampuff in each hand.

There was supposed to be one creampuff for each person in the manor. So when I asked why he had two, he said he stole them…

Cain: Then I asked from who, and he said, “I’ll leave that to your imagination.”. The twins shouted guilty, and then Oz…

Snow: Oh, come on. Of course we’d think of Mitile and Riquet when he says that, right?

White: Wenny becoming the suspect is totally all his fault, right?

Cain: Well, sure you can argue that but…I did tell you that one of the puffs he had was taken from me.

Oz: …So apart from the victim it still stands true that he committed theft.

Akira: Er, well, I think I understand the situation now. I should’ve announced it louder when I took the tray.

Owen suddenly opened his eyes. With a deep grimace, he slowly got up.

Chloe: You alright, Owen?

White: Your suspicions have been cleared, Owen.

Snow: You still got what you deserved, though.

Owen: …nh, haha…it must have been very fun for you, Demon Lord, to beat the naive and innocent me to a pulp.

Akira: It’s all because I took the tray, I’m sorry. You can have my creampuff.

Owen: Shut up. I already ate yours.

Akira: Huh!?

Cain: Hey, so the other one was the Master Sage’s?

Owen: I said cram it. Or should I squash all of you like a smushed creampuff?

His mood was not good in the slightest.

He roughly grasped at the air, summoning his trunk that growled from the inside.

When he saw the glare Oz gave him, he paused for a moment and then flapped his coat.

All while shooting back at him a glare that could kill someone.

Chloe: Ah! He’s gone…

Snow & White: Aww.

Snow: That was his “I’ll get you back for this” face.

White: The one where he’ll hold a grudge for a bit, and later come back at you full force.

Oz:

…Riquet, Mitile. What were you up to?

Akira: (He changed the subject…)

Mitile: Uhm, I…I was making a pesticide to deal with caterpillars.

Riquet: I was…thinking about going to see you, Oz.

Oz: Me?

Riquet clasped his hands together. He looked up at Oz with a fierce gleam in his eyes.

Riquet: Oz. Please grant me and Mitile a trial. One where we subdue monsters or magic creatures will do.

Mitile: …!

Riquet: I’ve been thinking about it since the day we failed our mission. What we could’ve done to succeed.

But the answer wouldn’t come to me…

So I figured it was not to be found in my head. It must be something I will learn from experience.

Cain: You got a point there. Experience is the best teacher, as they say.

I remember when the tactics I’d thought up at the training grounds didn’t work out in real battle.

Mitile: …So that’s why…a trial…

He muttered, a strong light beginning to shine in his eyes.

He clenched his fists together tight, and talked to himself like he was in a daze.

Mitile: …It didn’t go well last time but, if I build up more experience and overcome a trial, even I…

Oz: No. Training will be too much on you two.

Mitile: …nh. Y-You’re right. I’m sorry…

Riquet: Goodness! Our wounds from that last mission have already healed.

Now is the time to learn. Your consideration warms me, but you are such a worrywart, Oz!
