Chapter 1

Oz: Vox Nox.

The second he raised his staff, the herd of magic beasts before us let out cries of pain as they evaporated.

The sunlight poured into the creepy Church ruins, as if returning it to its once saintly atmosphere.

Oz: Sage, I’ve dealt with the beasts we were tasked with.

Akira: Thank you, Oz. Now we just wait for the others, I guess.

Thank you too, Sakitty, for protecting me.

I hugged the Sakitty that was floating in front of me as my shield.

This was once a village a few hundred years ago, in the borders of Central Country.

We had received a report that magic beasts were roaming around the village ruins, so we came to deal with them as the Sage’s wizards.

Akira: It sounded like it was going to be a pretty dangerous mission, but they weren’t much of a threat at all.

Oz: These kinds of pests are nothing.

Akira: (That’s our Oz…! He did just execute a whole pack of monsters by himself.)

(Then everyone else should be doing okay too. The Northern wizards probably see it as a chore though…)

Murr: Ahaha! Over here’s slick and clean too!

Arthur: Master Sage, Lord Oz. We have cleaned up the beasts in the western ward.

Shylock: Mitile performed excellently. He was very heroic on his broom luring the beasts with Prince Arthur.

Mitile: Heehee. They were tiny, but even I beat a few!

Akira: Wonderful work, everyone! Welcome back!

Oz: Arthur, there’s a leaf in your hair.

Arthur: Oh, you’re right. I did ride my broom into a tree, so it’s likely from then.

Thank you for taking it off for me!

I couldn’t help but smile seeing Oz remove a leaf from Arthur’s hair like he’d done this many times before.

Oz is Arthur’s foster parent.

He may be called a Demon Lord by the public, but it always warms my heart thinking about the countless occasions he doted on Arthur like this.

Watching over them warmly, the Northern wizards arrived with the annoyed expressions I thought they’d have.

Bradley: Hey, ya gotta be joking. That was it?

That was a walk in the park for a mission that was supposed to be crazy dangerous.
Mithra: Exactly. I came expecting a good time only to see a bunch of weaklings.

Owen: Did you call us out here for pest extermination because you underestimate our strength?

Akira: I, I’m sorry! The report said that vicious beasts had gathered, so…

Arthur: It’s amazing how you three managed to subdue all those beasts this quickly, and with a larger area than the rest of us too.

As expected of our Northern wizards. Don’t you think so, Lord Oz?

Oz:

That is true.

Bradley: Yeah right, your face doesn’t say so.

Owen: His face is saying that he alone was enough.

Mithra: I’m mad now. I’m going to kill you.

Oz: Only in your dreams could you turn me into stone.

Mithra:

Akira: G-Guys, we’ve already finished the mission, so why don’t we cool our heads…!

Shylock: Now now, we should be grateful that we completed the mission with everyone safe and sound.

Though it is a shame that Chloe made these new outfits for us, only to wear it for such a short time.

Murr: I like this fit, so I wanna wear it for longer!

Arthur: How about we leave going home for later and wander around the area for a bit?

Mitile: I like that idea. Then we should have a picnic!

Akira: Woo, sounds fun!

Mitile: Right! I actually have this basket of food from Mister Nero since he thought we’d return late.

Owen: Ooh. Any sweets in that basket?

Bradley: I know there’s fried chicken in there.

Mithra: I want a meatball.

Mitile: Of course! Mister Nero made everyone’s favourites!

Mithra, Owen, & Bradley: Yay.

We went on a stroll around the area while searching for a picnic spot.

The trees of this abandoned village had grown so thick and leafy they were practically its own forest. Here and there we also spotted relics of the past.

While everyone strolled off where they wanted, before me Arthur stopped in his tracks.

Akira: Arthur?

Arthur: This tree…

What Arthur’s eyes were fixed on was an ancient tree.

There was a hole by its base that a small child could fit inside.

Shylock: Is that a tree hollow?

Arthur: Yeah. When Lord Oz picked me up it was also under a tree like this one.

He found me curled up in the hollow of that tree during a snowstorm.

Eyelids slightly closed on those blue eyes that looked to be reminiscing cherished memories.

The place where Arthur was picked up by Oz, was also the place that he was abandoned.

That he can speak of it like a precious treasure to him is a measure as to how meaningful that meeting was to him.

Shylock: …My.

Akira: Shylock?

Shylock: I can sense faint magic from within this tree hollow. It does not feel malevolent however…

Arthur: …You’re right. Let’s look. Please stand back just in case, Master Sage.

Akira: A-Alright. I understand.

I took some distance from the hollow, holding Sakitty in my arms. Mithra and Oz also appeared to have noticed, approaching the hollow from other directions.

Mithra: Something fun in there?

Oz: This presence is…

They leaned their bodies towards the inside of the hollow after Shylock and Arthur.

And then–

???: Kyahaha.

Akira: (Huh, a kid?)

I was startled by the sound of a child’s voice coming from the tree hollow.

Arthur promptly reached his hand inside the hollow. What appeared was…

Oz: Of course, a Siofra…

Akira: Siofra?

What Arthur scooped out from the hollow was a strange being the size of a three or four year old with long hair.

At a first glance they resembled a human child, but their unusual skin colour and hair told me they were of a different species.

Nestled in Arthur’s arms, they looked like both a spoiled child and a feeble one.

Arthur: Are you okay? You seem very weak.

Why were you all alone…where did your friends go?

Oz:

Mithra: I don’t really care, but this one stopped moving after it laughed. Is it dead?

Akira: Eh!?
Shylock: No, they still breathe. Shall we take this child and move to a wider space?

Calling everyone else around us, we made our way back to the church ruins.

The being that Arthur had carried was laid on a stone bench that was still standing.

Arthur: Pernoctant Nixzo!

This is sugar. You’ll feel better if you eat it.

Mitile: I have my water bottle. Here, have some.

Arthur and Mitile tried to get them to eat the sugar and drink the water.

Except all the siofra did was silently stare, like they didn’t know what the two were doing.

Oz: This one still does not understand that sugar and water are to be consumed.

You should show them that by ingesting it first.

At Oz’s suggestion, the two young wizards ate the sugar and sipped water. Once they confirmed that the siofra saw them, they brought out the sugar and water again.

After a pause, the siofra copied their actions and took them both. When they did, I could see their expression brighten up.

Arthur: Want some more? Pernoctant Nixzo!

Their tiny mouth gobbled up the sugar that flowed towards their mouth.

Akira: (Good. They look okay now…)

Bradley: Wow, you picked up somethin’ interesting.

Owen: They sure did. I’m surprised this thing eats sugar.

Akira: (Do they know something about the siofra?)

(Anyways, it’s not just their appearance. Their movements are like that of a human child. It’s sorta uncanny…)

Big eyes as innocent as a baby looked up at us. They were so adorable I couldn’t take my eyes off them.

The siofra had grey skin, covered by clothes made from leaves, and long hair like the branches of trees.

Mitile: This kid…looks like they were born from a tree.

They’re not human, right? Does anyone know what they are?

Murr: A siofra! There used to be a lot in this region, but you’ll rarely find them these days. They’re a strange fairy species.

Chapter 2

Mithra: Siofra…I think I’ve read about them in a book I randomly flipped through once.

Did they look like humans though?

Bradley: Pretty sure they start out lookin’ like a fluffball. They just sleep ‘til they find someone to be their parent.

Akira: Parent?

Oz: Siofras recognize the first living being they see as their parent.

They then imitate their appearance.

Mitile: So they’re mimicking us…?

Shylock: Yes. Did you hear a laugh when we first looked in the hollow?

It is said that siofra laugh in the voice of the species it recognizes its parent as.

And then, between the several days from its birth to adulthood, it grants a wish of the one who gave it love…

A devoted little fairy they are.

Arthur: …Now that you mention it, I think I’ve heard of them before. A fairy that repays the love and kindness it was given.

Akira: Repays…what an upstanding fairy.

Murr: Siofras love humans and animals. They want to mix in with us.

As thanks for keeping them at our side and raising them, they give back a small happiness.

Akira: But surely it can’t grant everything. What about…giving you a yummy meal?

Murr: I think it can do that at least?

Bradley: Like a year’s worth of meat.

Owen: Or a year’s worth of candy.

Murr: Like that! Of course, it can’t do anything big like change the laws of the world.

Akira: I get it now. Ah…but it was the four of you at once who looked inside the tree hollow, right?

If that happens, who ends up being the parent?

Arthur, Shylock, Oz, and Mithra. The four wizards made eye contact.

Mithra: Isn’t it me? I’m going to be the strongest man one day.

Arthur: If it’s the first person they see that becomes their parent, then perhaps it is the one who made eye contact first?

Oz: Did you make eye contact?

Arthur: No…I was the one who carried them out of the hollow, but I don’t remember if I made eye contact with them…

Shylock: The inside of the hollow was dark, so it’s hard to tell.

It could be the same for this child. Though they have taken the appearance of a person, they could still be undecided on who their parent is.

Mitile: So you four are now candidates to be their parent?

We all looked at the fairy, and the siofra squeezed Arthur’s index finger with their tiny hand.

A cherubic face quietly stared at Arthur.

Murr: So far it’s Arthur they’re attached to!

Arthur:

Returning the stare, Arthur looked at the adorable fairy child with love, but there seemed to be something else in his gaze.

I wondered if there was something else on his mind. His gaze was that of one reflecting himself.

He gently patted the tiny fingers with the hand that wasn’t being held, and then he looked at me.

Arthur: Master Sage. If it’s alright, I would like it if you could leave care of this child to me.

Akira: You?

Arthur: Yes. Shylock mentioned that it takes only several days for a siofra to become an adult.

I know I have my duties as a prince and as your wizard, but luckily I have nothing big scheduled for the next few days.

Shylock: Yes, but, this fairy…

Oz: With or without you here to raise them, this fairy will grow up the same.

And if there is something that you wish for, I shall grant it.

Arthur: Thank you, Lord Oz. However, that is not what I meant.

We met each other, and they held my hand.

A tiny body such as theirs surely holds many worries. If they will depend on me, then I want to be there for them.

Oz:

…Is that so.

Arthur: And if I may indulge, Lord Oz. May I ask you to teach me the basics of child rearing?

Oz: Me…?

Arthur: Yes. Just like the days I spent with you in the North…

I want you to be here to help me take care of this child.

Oz:

Just listening got me curious.

What was their past like? I’ve heard stories, but that’s different than seeing it with my own eyes.

Akira: (Oz said he raised Arthur with the intention of turning him to stone and eating him, but Arthur is perfectly alive right now.)

(It’s definitely Oz who picked up a baby Arthur and raised him until he had to return to Central Country.)

(I wonder if I’ll get to know how Oz was like with Arthur by seeing how he takes care of the siofra.)

Owen: Oz and parenting? What a joke.

Akira: Owen.

Arthur: It is no joke. He is the one who did his best to raise me.

Owen: And I’m saying that’s unbelievable. Did Oz cast a hypnosis spell on you?

Owen crouched down by the siofra. Then, he starts poking their soft cheek with his finger.

Owen: He’s a short-tempered, merciless, cold-blooded Demon Lord. He might kill this feeble little fairy quicker than you think.

We wouldn’t want that to happen, so how about you let me raise them instead?

Mithra: Why you? I’m the parent candidate. I have the right to let my wish be granted.

Owen: Ooh. You’re gonna have your wish granted by a weakling such as this?

Mithra: You too. I just don’t like the idea of having what’s mine taken from me.

Bradley: When ya say that it makes this bandit want to take it even more.

I know you two won’t take this wish business seriously. Just watch and see how I put it to more use than you chumps.

Owen: Can the one year’s worth of meat guy not speak?

Bradley: Your wish ain’t any different from mine.

Owen: Huuuh?

Akira: Hey, hey…!

Shylock: Oz. Isn’t there something else you should tell Arthur?

Oz:

Shylock: Oz.

Oz: Do not interfere.

Arthur.

Arthur: Yes.

Oz: …Though you will be looking after them, it is not plausible for you to be together all the time.

You will have to raise them in a way that will not interrupt your life at the palace or manor.

Arthur: ! Yes! I’ll make sure to not trouble everyone else.

Shylock: What a troublesome man…

I understand. Then I shall participate too.

Akira: You too?

Shylock: Yes, I’m a parent candidate too after all.

If that’s alright with you, Oz.

Oz: Do as you like.

Murr: Okay, then I’m gonna volunteer myself as a parental candidate for siofra too!

It’s not everyday you get to watch Shylock stand up to Oz or a siofra growing up after all!

Shylock: Goodness. This isn’t a show, you know?

Akira: (This is kinda surprising. When it comes to stuff like this Shylock usually lets the younger wizards have a go at it…)

(Maybe he has a wish he wants granted?)

Mitile: Then let me help out!

I might know a few things from taking care of the younger grade schoolers back in South.

Arthur: That’s reassuring. I’ll be glad to have you, Mitile.

Lord Oz, will you be raising this child with us too?

Oz:

If that is your wish.

Arthur: Thank you!

Did you hear that, Siofra? There is no man more reliable than Lord Oz. You can rest assured around him.

Akira: Uhm, so “Siofra” is the name of the species, right? Like “Cat” or “Dog”.

Since we’ll be looking after them now, maybe we should give them a nickname.

Like, since it’s siofra…Sif!

Arthur: Sif! That’s nice.

Sif. We’ll be calling you Sif from now on.

Arthur smiled and looked truly overjoyed as he patted the siofra Sif’s head.

I thought that maybe Oz would have a similar expression watching that, but…

Oz:

For some reason, he was averting his gaze.

As if he just ate something bitter.

Chapter 3

Oz: Vox Nox.

We promptly made time the next day, and Oz, Murr, Mitile, and I came to the church ruins.

Akira: I hope Sif’s doing well. If only we could have brought them to the manor…

Oz: It is the siofra’s nature to not depart the land they are born in. We cannot bring them anywhere.

Because of that, it was decided we would commute here to raise Sif.

We would keep in mind our missions and schedules, and come visit when the timing aligned.

Akira: (They’re not like a human child who you have to be around 24/7…)

(And Oz did put up a barrier so magic beasts wouldn’t come in.)

Hellooo. Sif, we’re hereee.

Murr: Where could they be hiding~? Maybe they’d come out faster if we’d brought their beloved Arthur.

Mitile: But he’s not here since he’s got official duties. We have to try hard to find them…ah!

Sif was on the stone bench that Arthur put them to sleep in last night.

They were lying on their side like they were basking in the sunlight, and when they heard us calling, raised their head and got up.

Murr: Hey little siofra…no wait. Sif, tell us lots about yourself.

When you transform into a human, do you also gain the feelings and expressions of people too? For example…when people are hugged or have their name called, they tend to recognize that as being loved.

For the most part at least. When it comes to natural instincts…licking or play-biting is also a way of showing peaceful emotions too.

Tell me, which approach do you recognize as showing love?

Mitile: Mister Murr! Sif’ll hate you if you treat them like some experiment.

And you should crouch when talking to children, so you don’t intimidate them. Like this, and make eye contact…

Murr: Are you teaching me now? Should I be a kid too?

Mitile: Whuuh, how does it come to that!?

As I watched their banter from the corner of my eye, I continued unpacking our things with Oz.

Akira: Thanks Oz, for carrying everyone’s stuff.

Oz: It was nothing.

Everyone in the manor had passed us presents for Sif.

When we told them about the fairy, they brought out all kinds of things they thought we might’ve needed for raising a kid.

Akira: There’s snacks and small meals made by Riquet, Nero, and Rutile in case they can eat,

and pillows and blankets from the other wizards when they heard it was for a small child…

We also received a lot of toys, I hope Sif can play with them…

Oz: That fairy may not be a human, but they have a desire to blend in with people and animals. They might at least take interest.

Still, keep your expectations low.

Akira: You’re right. I’ll just think of it as lucky if they take a liking to them…!

Huh. There’s toys on this chair…they’re dolls made of wood. Did we bring something like this?

Oz: Those were here before. They were likely used by the former residents of this village.

Akira: Makes sense. Maybe the church was looking after children?

If so, do you think a siofra could have been among them…?

Oz: I cannot say for sure, but siofras used to live in groups.

Because of a certain characteristic of theirs however, their numbers have slowly diminished. The one we found was likely the only one left in this land.

Akira: Certain characteristic? Do you mean…

I suddenly heard the sound of running footsteps behind me. When I turned to look, I saw Sif dashing towards me.

When they saw our faces though, they went to hide in the shadows as if they were surprised.

Akira: Eh?

Oz:

Mitile who was chasing after them drooped his eyebrows in bewilderment.

Mitile: It feels like they’re more distant than yesterday.

Murr: The closer we get the farther they go!

Akira: I thought we got pretty close yesterday, I wonder if they’ve forgotten?

Mithra: Arthim.

A large door appeared before me. Out came Mithra and Shylock.

Mithra: Ah, there you are Master Sage.

Shylock: My, is it hide and seek time with Sif? They’re so cute hiding in the shadow of that tree.

Murr: Oh, Shylock. I thought you said you were gonna be busy the whole day.

Shylock: I finished my tasks earlier than expected, so I had Mithra bring me here.

Mitile: Mister Mithra, why’re you still wearing yesterday’s clothes?

Mithra: Too lazy to change them. Anyways, I’ve been looking for you Master Sage.

I want to take a nap so hurry up and take my…hm?

Mitile & Murr: Ah.

Before I realized it, Sif had run from the shadows to Mithra’s legs.

They squeezed the hem of his cloak, and the sight of them looking up at Mithra was that of a child attached to their parent.

Mitile: Huh? They’re not scared of you, Mister Mithra.

Murr: Mithra, they love you!

Mithra: Wow. You may be tiny but you’re smart as well.

That’s right. Your strongest dad is me.

Oz: Wrong.

Mithra: Huh? Are you implying I’m weak?

Shylock: No, he’s not. He means to say that it’s because of your clothes.

You’re the only one wearing the same outfit as yesterday.

Akira: Uhm, do you mean Sif’s taken a liking to those clothes or…?

Oz: Fairies are sensitive to change. Mithra looks the exact same as when they met.

It is likely that Sif sees us as strangers since we’re in different clothes.

Shylock: Inviebelle.

With Shylock’s magic his clothes changed to that of yesterday’s. Then, he spreads his arms out to Sif.

Shylock: Here, it’s your big brother from yesterday. Come to me.

Sif immediately ungrasped Mithra’s cloak and jumped into Shylock’s arms.

Mithra: Wha, hey.

Mitile: If that’s how it works then…

Ortonik Sealsispilce!

Murr: Eanul Rambul!

Oz: Vox Nox.

Akira: (Even Oz…)

Starting with Mitile’s spell, everyone else changed their clothes to the ones they had yesterday. It was Oz’s spell that changed mine.

Mitile: Sif. Hey, do you remember me?

When Mitile reached his hand out, Sif placed their hand on his.

Sif: Kyahaha…!

Akira, Mitile, & Murr: They laughed!

Mithra: Haaaugh…even though they were just attached to me.

Akira: (They must really be sensitive to change if they saw us as strangers for wearing different clothes…)

(I gotta tell the ones who didn’t come today!)

After holding Mitile’s hand, Sif toddled on over to Oz.

Oz:

Sif:

Murr: It’s like they’re having a staring contest.

Mitile: Wow…I don’t think I have the guts to look into Lord Oz’s eyes this long…

Mithra: I could stare into his eyes forever though.

Shylock: Ah…anyways, their attention has slipped once again. They seem to be interested in the gifts by Oz’s feet.

Oz: Vox Nox.

He opened a box with his spell, and stuffed inside were tiny nuts and berries.

As soon as they laid eyes on it, Sif stretched their hand out without hesitation.

Oz: You want these?

Sif:

Oz: That is food.

Taking a berry, Oz chews one as if to make an example.

Sif quickly copied him.

Sif: …! Kyakya!

Akira: They’re happy!

Shylock: It seems the taste is to their liking.

Murr: Let’s open up the other presents!

Akira: Yes!

Mithra: Ah, these pillows and blankets are perfect for naptime.

Mitile: Hey, we brought those for Sif. You can’t just take them for yourself!

Shylock: …Oz.

Shouldn’t you tell the Master Sage and the others at least?

Oz:

Now is not the time.

Shylock: I’d rather not keep them from the truth like this but…

May you have no regrets.

Chapter 4

Mithra: Arthim.

Bradley: Ooh. It sure is handy to go wherever ya want with just a door.

Owen: But you can do that too Bradley. Just sneeze and you’ll go anywhere.

Bradley: I don’t do that ‘cuz I wanna. I’m blastin’ off against my will.

Mithra: Well, you do have to be on my level to use teleportation magic. Be grateful.

Anyways, you two must have nothing good to do to be tagging along with me in the middle of the night.

Bradley: Look who’s talkin’.

Owen: That’s rich coming from you.

Sif: Step step…

Mithra: Ah, you’re here.

Bradley: Yo, One Year’s Meat. Doing well?

Owen: Good evening, One Year’s Candy. Looks like no monsters have come to attack you.

Mithra: Please don’t give them weird nicknames.

Remember, I’m your father. Since I must, I’ll be taking care of you tonight.

Here, come eat this.

Bradley: That’s a big lump of meat. Can they even eat this? Munch munch.

Mithra: I believe when I was this little I also ate something like this, so I’m sure it’s fine.

Owen: So why are you eating meat when we have that lump of meat?

Bradley: Who cares. I stole it from the kitchen before we left.

Owen: Cookies are yummier than some meat. Munch munch…

Bradley: Are you some candy vendor? Can’t believe you’re eating sweets at this time of night.

Owen: Nevermind that, isn’t that lump of meat too big?

Even if they could eat it, that tiny mouth of theirs couldn’t tear it apart.

Mithra: How bothersome…since you’re nagging so much why don’t you feed them.

Owen: No way. What a chore.

Mithra: Bradley.

Bradley: Ask like that and no one’ll do it. Just cut them into pieces, man.

Think of slicing the meat into pieces as part of taking care of them. It’s no biggie.

Mithra:

…You have a point.

Bradley: Anyways, it gets real gloomy here…I shoulda brought beer.

Owen: Too bad. It would’ve been fun to give them alcohol.

Maybe they would’ve gotten so drunk they’d give us a hundred year’s worth of candy and meat.

Bradley: Like I’d waste my precious alcohol doing somethin’ as useless as that.

Owen: Then why’d you wish you brought it?

Bradley: The remains of a once thriving village, with its last remaining siofra…

I was wondering how a drink would taste in memory of them all. Wouldn’t hurt to find out.

Owen: Such a weird hobby. There’s no point in drinking your heart out for those who’ve already gone.

Bradley: Really? I thought you liked these kinds of stories.

Owen: …? What do you mean?

Bradley: This village prospered from taking care of the siofra population near them.

They were probably worshipped like gods. That, or they treasured them the same as they would’ve human children.

…but lowlifes exist anywhere.

Owen: Go on.

Bradley: One day, some guy heard the rumours and came to the village thinkin’ of makin’ a buck or two.

The siofra were captured, and their numbers rapidly decreased.

And then this village that lost its worth and residents was abandoned, becoming the ruins we’re in now.

…How about that?

Owen: Huuuh? That was all a tale you spun?

Bradley: Heh, you never know. I’m just mimicking your chatty mouth when you go on your creepy monologues.

Owen: How about if the village came to ruin because of infighting? That would be more entertaining.

Bradley: Haha! Your personality is shit as ever.

Mithra: Guys, you’re being loud.

Haaaugh…I’m getting bored of caring for the kid.

Owen: If you don’t want them I’ll take them.

Hey siofra. Don’t you wanna have fun with me instead of meanie papa Mithra?

Since you look like a child you probably prefer candy over meat. Here, I’ll share my cookie with you.

Sif: Hmph…

Bradley: Wow, they’re using both arms to push you away. They don’t need your half-eaten goods.

Owen: Huh? Hey, do you wanna die?

Bradley: They know how much of a meanie you are now. Kids’re sharp like that.

C’mere, I’ll make you strong.

Sif: !

Bradley: Come on, up you go. Kids love high places.

You look like one, so you might as well learn a lot to become more human.

Mithra: Hey. Give them back.

Bradley: Woah. Don’t pull so suddenly, that’s dangerous.

Sif: Kyakya.

Bradley & Owen: Ah, they laughed.

Mithra: See, they like me more. Good, good.

Owen: Why’re you stirring up their hair like that?

Mithra: I am petting their head.

When Rutile does this to Mitile he smiles. Children enjoy this action, it seems.

…Actually, I think I remember Tiletta doing this to Rutile too.

Bradley: Haah…man, you and everybody else are really going for it.

Pipehead, the Prince, and the others are one thing, but Oz showing affection for this little fairy? What a joke.

Owen: Seriously. Oz seems like he’d be the least interested in playing house.

Mithra: Hmm, maybe he has a lot of free time too?

Forget that, I’ve cut the meat. You eat it like this. Please chomp away.

Sif: …sniff sniff.

*chomp*

Mithra: Haha, they ate it.

See, it’s yummy isn’t it.

Days passed since we started looking after Sif.

Taking a break between official duties, Arthur had come to see the fairy.

Sif: Kyakya!

Arthur: Hahaha! Amazing, Sif! What a rascal you are, scaling Lord Oz’s back like that.

Oz: Children love high places. You used to climb my back like this too.

You would climb my back no matter what I was doing, so for a period of time I would carry you on my shoulders as I walked.

Arthur: Hehe. The world I saw from your shoulders was so wonderful after all. I remember begging you during our walks to carry me.

Speaking of walks, I also loved when you held my hands and helped me jump.

Especially when Lords Snow and White, and Lord Figaro came over. I would be in the middle and you would all lift me together…

Oz: …Then we should do it.

If you enjoyed it, then Sif surely will too. I will hold their other hand.

Arthur: ! Yes. Come here, Sif!

One, two, up we go!

Sif: Kyahaha!

Akira: Wow, hand swinging. Looks like fun.

Shylock and I asked Oz to take us with him here.

I was holding Sakitty, watching over the three warmly when that beautifully sculpted mouth of Shylock’s let out a deep sigh.

Shylock: I never thought there’d be a day where I would witness Oz playing around with a fairy.

Akira: Ahaha. True, it isn’t something likely to happen.

Seeing it with my own eyes though makes it clear to me that Oz raised Arthur.

A lot of the games that Oz has been playing with Sif use the body…

Judging from their conversation, it’s all stuff that he picked up from trying to play with Arthur.

Arthur: Lord Oz, may I please carry Sif?

Oz: Yes, support their head with your hand to not let them fall.

Arthur: Understood. Just like how you used to hold me…right.

Oz: You still remember?

Arthur: Of course. I remember feeling so safe and warm supported in your arms.

I remember doing upsies, shoulder rides…and oh! I think you did something like this too.

He said, and Arthur flew straight upwards to the sky while carrying Sif.

Shylock, Oz, & Akira: …!?

I thought for a second that he was going to fly into the sun, but as if he lost all his magic he suddenly came falling down with speed.

Akira: (Eeeeek…!)

(If I remember correctly, this is what they call the Kirken Meteor. Everytime I see it it gets me anxious…)

Sif: Kyakya!

Arthur: Ahaha! It is fun, isn’t it Sif?

They repeatedly flew upwards and dropped downwards, laughing happily.

Looking up at that, Oz raised his voice, seemingly a little worried.

Oz: Arthur! Come down this instant.

Arthur: It’s fine! I won’t drop Sif.

Shylock and I stepped up beside Oz who was anxious.

Shylock: Hmhm, children do love these exciting games.

I understand how Prince Arthur grew up to be so courageous and gallant now.

Akira: That game…didn’t Snow and White teach him that?

Did you do that often with Arthur, Oz?

Chapter 5

Oz: …Arthur played it with the twins, and then begged me to try it.

When I attempted it, he was overjoyed. After that I remember doing it countless times whenever he asked.

Though we have flown high into the sky and let ourselves fall down many times now…

It is a dangerous kind of play, now that I think about it.

Akira: (So he didn’t realize it was dangerous before…)

Shylock: …Then how about you inform him now?

If you tell him calmly, he will surely listen to your words. He is no longer a child after all.

Oz:

Akira: …?

(What is it, I wonder. The past few days it feels like Shylock’s words to Oz have been hiding another layer to them…)

I restlessly pet Sakitty, trying to ignore the uneasiness in the air.

Despite being randomly petted a lot, Sakitty didn’t make a bothered face at all, and subjected itself to my hands. (Cutie)

Then, Arthur came back from the sky with Sif in his arms.

Shylock: Welcome back, Prince Arthur. I hope you may let me take care of this child now.

Arthur: Of course. Here, Sif. Shylock’s calling for you.

He let Sif down, and they waddled over to Shylock.

Shylock: My mischievous and cute little master. You played so much, your hair is a mess.

If you insist on running around, at least let me comb your hair first.

He sat Sif down on his lap, and with a spell whipped out a beautifully decorated comb.

His slender fingers took a bundle of Sif’s hair and began gently combing.

Arthur: Isn’t that nice, Sif. Shylock is going to tidy you up.

Arthur sat down next to them, and Sif looked joyful.

I couldn’t stop myself from smiling as I watched the happy smiles on their faces.

Akira: Thanks in no small part to you, Arthur and Sif have become really close.

I feel happy just watching them have fun.

Oz: …Yeah.

Arthur: Ahaha. Sif, if you keep grabbing at the comb like that Shylock won’t be able to untangle your hair.

Shylock: I love it when you’re playful, but could you please stay still for me?

Shylock pleaded, bringing his face close. Sif immediately stopped their antics.

Dangling just their feet, they let Shylock continue with a smile.

Shylock: Hmhm, what a good child you are.

If only you could leave this place, I would take you to my bar and make you a drink you would like.

By the way, are you fond of cats? It would make me happy to see you get along with the strays that come here.

While we were listening to that pleasant voice, Sif’s hair was perfectly tied up.

Shylock let Sif off his lap, and as a finishing touch kindly patted their head.

Shylock: Like this, you can play as wildly as you like with no worries.

Arthur: Nice hairstyle, Sif! Thanks, Shylock.

Arthur picked up Sif in his arms, and did upsies with them. Their energetic laughter echoed throughout the church ruins.

Arthur: Master Sage, come play with us!

Akira: Oh, sure! Let’s go, Sakitty.

On Arthur’s invitation Sakitty and I ran to them.

Being so unconditionally attached to us, Sif was super lovable.

Their happy face was so nice to see, we played the games we learned from Oz over and over again.

Arthur: I know it only takes several days for you to grow up, but I wonder how much longer we get to look after you.

I’m excited to see you turn into an adult. I’m sure you’ll turn out to be a splendid fairy surrounded by everyone’s love.

Oz:

Shylock:

Owen: Ohh…

So that’s what’s up.

It’s now been days since we started caring for Sif.

Mitile and I safely completed a mission, and had just arrived back at the manor.

Akira: So you read Sif a picture book yesterday.

Mitile: Yup, with Prince Arthur. When I was little, my brother often read me books.

Sif was super adorable sitting on our laps and listening so intently!

Akira: Aww. Now I really wish I could’ve made time to go with you guys then.

But at least I got to go on a starry night stroll with them thanks to Mithra bringing me later.

Mitile: Wow, that also sounds nice!

Though the amount of time each of us could spend with Sif varied on our schedules, at least everyday someone in our group was able to visit them.

Sif was so fond of us now that the moment they’d spot us they would come running towards us with a toothy smile on their face.

Mitile: How’s today? Should we go see Sif after this?

Akira: After I finish some other tasks, I was planning on asking Oz or Mithra depending on their availability to take me. Will you come too?

Mitile: Yes! Ah, speak of the Demon Lord!

Oz: Sage.

Akira: Oz. With that outfit on, I’m guessing you’re going to see Sif with Arthur?

Oz: Arthur has gone on ahead. I came to pick you up.

Akira: Me?

(I didn’t ask Oz to pick me up after my mission though, because I had no idea when it would end…)

(I am asking practically everyday though, so maybe he thought of me and stayed behind?)

While I thought that, I could see people going down the stairs.

Shylock: Why, hello everyone.

Akira: Hello. Are you two off to see Sif as well?

It just so happens that Oz came to pick me up.

Murr: Nope! We’re wearing these because we were roleplaying in Shylock’s room!

We’re not going to see the siofra!

Mitile & Akira: Roleplaying?

Mitile: In that outfit…?

Akira: Just what were you…

Shylock: Hmhm, I leave that to your imagination.

However, since we are wearing this we might as well tag along. Is that alright with you?

Oz: I don’t mind. What about you two?

Akira: Could you wait a moment?

We just finished a mission, so before I forget I’d like to write my report down in the Sage’s journal.

Mitile: Me too. I want to report to my brother and the others first.

Murr: I’ll go after saying my greetings to the moon!

Oz: Then I shall take Shylock first. I’ll come back for the rest of you.

Akira: Huh? But won’t that be too much of a hassle…

Oz: This is me you’re talking to. And I mustn’t leave Arthur alone any longer.

Vox Nox.

Akira & Mitile: Ah…

Murr: They’re gone! Even though Arthur should be fine!

Akira: Y-Yeah. There shouldn’t be anything dangerous, so…

(What was that all about?)

Sif: Kyakya!

Arthur: Ahaha. You must really like hugs if you’re that pleased.

I get it. I can’t tell you how many times being wrapped in warmth has made me happy.

But I’ve also realized something hugging you.

That even the hugger gains happiness from holding a tiny warmth in their arms…

I wonder if Lord Oz also felt this way hugging me.

Owen: Hey there, Prince.

Arthur: Owen. You came too.

Owen: Where’s Oz? Not with you?

Arthur: He went to get the others. Do you want to hug Sif too?

Owen: No way. I didn’t come here to babysit.

I came here to chat with you. To tell the Prince the truth he doesn’t know.

Arthur: The truth?

Owen: That’s right. About that little fairy you’ve been coddling.

The more love you pour into that fairy the more love you get back.

And when they become an adult they’ll ask you, who they adore so much, what your wish is.

Then they will grant it, and die.

Arthur: Uh…

Owen: That’ll be this fairy’s whole life. So ephemeral, pitiable, and boring.

Oz knew about this, and kept it from you.

How cruel. Even though he knew it’d hurt you sooner or later.

Just laughable, the sight of you naively and innocently playing around with that fairy.

Arthur: …I’m sure he didn’t tell me for my sake. So as to not hurt me.

Because he is a kind man.

Owen: As if. He’s a coldhearted Demon Lord wearing the skin of a righteous man in order to fool you.

Would a righteous man really stay silent on something so important?

Arthur:

Owen: He keeps you in the dark because you’re still a child he has to protect.

That’s how Oz has kept so many secrets from you.

…Ah, I see. In truth, Oz doesn’t trust you, that’s why.

You’re like a pet to him. You only exist at his side to be doted on.

Arthur: T-That’s not…

Oz: Vox Nox.

Chapter 6

Arthur: …Lord Oz…and Shylock…

Owen: Party poopers. You’re already back.

Shylock: Owen. So you came as well.

Owen: Yup. But I’ll be leaving now. I’ve finished what I came for.

Bye bye, little Prince. Enjoy what time you have left.

Shylock & Oz:

Shylock: …Prince Arthur. Has Owen told you something?

Arthur:

This child…will soon lose their life, for us…

Shylock:

Oz: Arthur…

Arthur: …Lord Oz, I am no longer that little child you knew who is so easily moved to tears.

I have the capability to accept this child’s fate and say goodbye.

…No, not just this child. No matter what fate has in store…

Oz:

…Arthur…

Arthur: Lord Oz. Your ‘Arthur’ is growing up faster than you think.

You don’t realize it, so to you I’m still that young and inexperienced Arthur…

To stay silent about this, knowing that I’ll only ever be someone you have to protect,

…makes me feel lonely.

Oz: …No. I…

I……

Arthur:

…My apologies. I need to cool my head.

Sif. I’m sorry, but I’m going to take a walk.

Shylock: Prince Arthur…

Oz:

Shylock: Please wait, Prince Arthur.

Arthur: Shylock…

Shylock: I’m terribly sorry, for keeping this from you.

Arthur: Please don’t apologize. Lord Oz made you keep quiet.

Shylock: …I felt that prolonging the news was wrong, but I still waited on Lord Oz to tell you himself.

I should have told you sooner.

In the end, trying to keep you away from the terrible truth has only resulted in hurting you more.

Arthur: …Thank you. I made you worry for me.

Sif…or the siofra. Are their deaths inevitable?

It saddens me, but I must accept it.

Shylock: Yes. I know you have that strength in you.

Lord Oz is aware of this as well. However…

Arthur:

It’s not just this time. There’s going to be more like this, meetings, and farewells…

Happiness, sadness, all of it. I want to share them with Lord Oz.

But…I don’t think he wants that.

Shylock:

Arthur: I wonder if from now on, I’ll be the only one left in the dark…

Shylock: In this entire world, you are the one person who knows him best.

And Lord Oz loves you.

Arthur: Shylock…

Shylock: Perhaps now is the time you should tell him how you feel, and open his heart using yours.

Arthur: Me, open his heart…?

Shylock: Indeed. Even I have clashed and soured relations with an old friend, many times.

Again and again, I’d say I’d cut ties with them after a fight.

But we’d still remain friends as if nothing happened. …Do you know why?

Arthur: Because one of you would compromise?

Shylock: Nope. They were so persistent that I’d run out of patience.

Arthur: That’s surprising…I see you as so strong-willed, so it’s hard to imagine you giving in to someone else.

Perhaps that’s why they call this old friend of yours…one of the greatest minds in history.

Shylock: …It is of great annoyance, but that person does know every inch about me.

What I’m attracted to, disgusted, scared, stimulated by, what moves my heart.

That’s why I always end up forgiving him.

Arthur:

Shylock: Your bond with Lord Oz is nothing erratic like ours.

Especially Lord Oz, stern as he is, he hides a pure heart much like the snowfields of North.

And no one is more fond of that view than you.

So please, do not fear. All will be fine.

Arthur:

I…I don’t know if I can open his heart without offending or hurting him though…

Shylock: I know you can. This is something that only you can do.

Arthur: Heh…I hope that’s true.

Then I will try telling him my feelings. And hear his words out without running away.

We’ll keep talking until we understand each other…

Shylock: Yes, that will do. Shall we return to Sif then?

Arthur: Yeah, let’s. Thanks, Shylock.

I’m still sad we have to say goodbye though…

Losing your life in exchange for granting a wish…

Shylock:

By the time I finished writing in the Sage’s journal, the sun was nearly setting.

Akira: (It’s gotten late. I wonder if Oz has returned yet.)

I left my room, and was headed for Mitile’s room when on my shoulder Sakitty turned its head, sensing someone.

Oz: Sage.

Akira: Ah, Oz. Come to pick us up?

Great timing. I just finished what I needed to do–

Oz:

Akira: Oz?

What’s wrong? You seem…

Oz: It’s nothing.

Akira: But…

It didn’t look like nothing.

I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. I could somehow tell on that usually emotionless face of his that he was unhappy about something.

Akira: (What happened? Does it have to do with Arthur…?)

Oz:

Akira: Uhm…Oz. Would you like to talk with me in my room…?

I opened the door that I just closed, and invited Oz into my room.

Face to face with an Oz who won’t meet my eyes, I honestly tell him what’s been on my mind.

Akira: Did something happen at the church ruins?

Oz:

He stayed silent, neither confirming or denying.

His eyebrows crinkled, and after a long pause, his lips finally moved.

Oz: There is something I must tell you.

Akira: Of course. What is it?

Oz: It is about that fairy.

They can grant a wish for the one they acknowledge as their parent.

However, there is a price for that.

Their own life.

I swallowed my breath at the unexpected revelation.

And thought of the person who was the most attached to Sif.

Akira: Arthur…is he aware of this?

Oz: He just found out. From Owen.

The siofra live life with their fates set in stone. Of course, even they are aware of it themselves.

There is nothing we can do about it.

He stopped his words there. His face slightly darkened.

Oz: …But it will still hurt him.

Akira:

Oz: That’s why I avoided telling him the truth.

I thought that he might put on a brave front, while his heart would shed tears…

And that it was still too early for him to accept the truth.

Akira: Oz…

The setting sun’s last light casted long shadows in my room.

The unsettling sky stuck between day and night reminded me of Oz’s heart.

Just as the colours of the sky gradually changed, his heart was lost and wandering.

Oz: But perhaps I was wrong.

Perhaps I could have told him sooner.

Perhaps it would have been better if I said something to him, when he found out the truth…

The chance to know that is now lost to time.

The dignified red eyes I knew were now dull and tightly shut.

Dark shadows hid his face.

Oz: …I might have been afraid.

A sea of regret washed over my heart and drowned it.

Oz is the world’s strongest wizard.

He could bend the world to his will, grant any wish. That’s how powerful he is.

Yet his heart still hurts to see his loved ones in pain.

Akira: (It’s not that Oz just didn’t want to make Arthur sad…)

(Oz himself didn’t want to see him like that.)

There was also Arthur’s prophecy. They might’ve overlapped in his head and made the situation harder for him to face.

I think I’ve found out the source of what’s been worrying me the past few days.

Chapter 7

Oz dropped his hand like it lost all strength, and I scooped it up with both of my hands.

Akira: You haven’t lost your chance yet.

Let’s go see Arthur. You can talk until you feel okay.

You won’t be able to understand the things you should if you don’t exchange words.

I felt that if I didn’t hold onto his hand tight enough, it would slip away.

It was like he had no energy. Or maybe he didn’t care. Maybe he doesn’t need anyone’s hand.

I don’t know the truth, but I press my fingers hard.

Akira: It’s what you and I…and everyone at this manor have been doing.

I know you’ll be fine. Your words are always straightforward and sincere…

And Arthur is a strong person! He will understand!

Oz:

Oz didn’t try to brush my hands away.

He didn’t hold them back, but he did stare silently at our joined hands.

As if something was there.

Oz: …Mitile. You’re there, aren’t you.

He looked at the door and spoke. After a hesitant sounding knock, Mitile poked his face in.

Mitile: I’m sorry…I finished getting ready, so I went to meet the Master Sage, and then heard your conversation…

Oz: It’s fine. I wanted to tell you too.

Mitile:

His gaze drifted elsewhere, searching for the right words. He then raised his face, a little nervous.

Mitile: We have to say goodbye, forever.

Fresh green grass eyes wavered with sorrow.

It wasn’t just Arthur. Mitile also loved Sif a lot.

Mitile: …We got along so well. It’s so heartbreaking to say goodbye.

It doesn’t matter how much you try to steel yourself. It’s still depressing, and lonely.

Akira: Mitile…

Mitile: But that’s all the more reason why we should say goodbye together.

I want Sif to be surrounded by everyone who loves them, and hear our thank yous and farewells.

When I saw Mitile look straight into Oz’s eyes, I instinctively reached for Sakitty.

If we could. If we could tell them something before we parted. Because this must happen.

I don’t want any of us to feel like this anymore. With that wish in my heart I also turn to look at Oz.

Akira: Oz. Let’s go to Arthur.

Oz:

Yes. You’re right.

He nodded, and looked out the window.

The steadily changing sky had become painted in navy blue.

Night was coming.

Mithra: Arthim.

That’s another time today I took you somewhere with my door. Be grateful to my magic.

Bradley: Hell no! Damnit, just when I bumped into you in the hallway ya had to drag me here too.

I thought you got bored of babysittin’.

Mithra: I need to kill time. For the past sleepless week my only friend at night has been that fairy.

Owen: Oh, you guys came too?

Mithra: Owen.

Bradley: You’re here too.

Owen: Mithra, get your door out. I want to go home.

Bradley: Huh? Why’d you come?

Owen: Giving out spoilers. I told the Prince the cold hard truth.

Bradley: He didn’t know?

No one told him, huh. Not Oz, Shylock, or Murr.

Owen: Yup. It wasn’t just the Prince, but Mitile and the Master Sage didn’t know either.

The guy no one believes in, the guy who watches the Demon Lord’s mood, and the guy who finds hiding the truth entertaining–they’re all worthless old coots.

That man’s always stopping me from saying mean things to the children, yet here he goes being the bigger bully.

That fairy dies when it grants a wish. It’s so cruel of him to hide such a sad truth like that.

Mithra: Wait, that fairy’s going to die?

Owen: You didn’t know?

Bradley: No way.

Mithra: Now that you mention it, I think I remember something like that…well, whatever.

Anyways Owen. It’s rather rude of you to go home now. Let’s chat for a bit.

The siofra can’t speak, so killing time with them left me unsatisfied.

Owen: Hah? Don’t wanna.

Mithra: Oh come on.

Owen: Hey, let go!

Bradley: Give it up. That’s how he got me too.

Owen: Tch.

Mithra: Ah, you’re here. So you were playing with Arthur and Shylock.

Arthur: Mithra, Bradley. You guys came.

Shylock: And Owen. You’ve returned.

Owen: By force ‘cuz of this guy.

Mithra: Siofra.

Sif: !

Bradley: Oh, running up to Mithra right when you see him.

Mithra: Of course. They love me.

Good evening, have you been well?

Sif: Kyakya!

Owen: You’re making a mess of their hair again.

Arthur: You’re very unrestrained in your head patting, Mithra.

Oz: Vox Nox.

Arthur: …!

Bradley: Oz’s here too, along with the Sage and the Southern Shrimp.

Mitile: Good evening. Wow, everyone’s gathered!

Akira: Arthur, sorry we’re late. And Shylock, we’ve kept you waiting.

Arthur: No problem. You were on a mission after all, so don’t let it bother you.

Shylock: Did you complete your report in the Sage’s journal?

Akira: Yes, fortunately.

Arthur: Lord Oz, thank you for bringing the Master Sage.

Oz: …Yeah.

Oz & Arthur:

Arthur didn’t look any different in my eyes, despite having learned the truth about Sif from Owen.

Akira: (It’s best if we let those two have a long and private talk…how do I do that…)

Sif: Kyahaha!

Mithra: Hey, no grabbing my cloak. You’ll stretch it out.

Mitile: Wow. Sif is so attached to you…when did you have the time to become friends?

Mithra: We played together night after night. Obviously.

It’s quite easy being the playmate for a child. Should I give you some tips?

Mitile: Uhh? You…?

Akira: (Woah…! Isn’t this my chance!?)

Mithra!!

Mithra: Oh, you startled me. Please don’t shout so loudly all of a sudden.

Akira: P-Pardon me. I just really wanted to hear those babysitting tips of yours.

Shall we talk over there?

Mithra: Huuuh…? Well, I don’t mind teaching you.

Akira: Yay. Thanks a lot, Mithra!

…So while we’re doing that, how about we leave Sif with Oz and Arthur?

Oz & Arthur:

Mitile: ! I, I want you to teach me too, Mister Mithra! Let’s hurry on over there…!

Bradley: ? What’s gotten into you two?

Owen: Did you plan something in secret behind our backs?

Akira & Mitile: Uhm, erm…

Mithra: Actually, why aren’t we taking the siofra with us? I’m supposed to be giving you tips on how to play with them.

Akira: Urk…! That’s…

Shylock: They want you to dote on them, Mithra.

They don’t want to see you dote on Sif as an example, they want to experience it for themselves. Right, Mitile?

Akira: (Shylock…!)

Mitile: Uh? …Y-Yeah! That’s right!

Akira: Please, Mithra! So let’s go over there!

Mithra: Okay, I guess. So you and Mitile are going to be the siofra.

Akira & Mitile: Yessir!

Bradley & Owen:

Bradley: If that’s what you’re doing, we don’t need to be here.

Owen: Yeah. Let’s go home.

Mithra: Where do you think you’re going? You’re coming with us.

Bradley: Damnit!

Owen: You’re the worst.

Sakitty sniffed at the air. When I followed where they were sniffing, I saw a light coming towards us like a shooting star.

Murr: Landing–!

Akira: Murr!

Shylock: Oh, you came by broom.

Murr: Mmhmm! The moon and I just couldn’t say goodbye to each other!

Hey Mithra, why d’ya got Owen and Bradley in your arms like that? A new kinda game?

Mithra: I’m going to showcase my babysitting skills to the two of them. Do you want to see as well?

Murr: What the heck, sounds fun! I’m in, I’m in–!

It became lively once Murr came. Slipping past the others, I took Sif to Oz and Arthur.

Akira: Arthur.

Chapter 8

Akira: We’ll be over there, so I’ll leave Sif with you and Oz.

…While we’re gone, I hope you can have a nice long talk.

Arthur: Master Sage…

…Yes. Thank you very much.

When I look at Oz, he gives me a single nod.

I prayed that their chat would go well, and left with the others.

Shylock: Now, I believe you two have already been informed by Oz.

Mitile: Yes. When a siofra grants a wish, it disappears.

It’s sad but…I feel that’s why we must stay by their side.

Akira: I think so too, Mitile. Before the time comes…we should spend every precious moment we can together.

Bradley: Heh. Those’re some cool expressions you’re puttin’ on, kiddos.

I thought you two would be sobbing messes, but you’re actually keepin’ it together.

Shylock: Yes, but please don’t push yourselves. There is no reason to hide away your feelings.

Mitile & Akira: Thank you…

Murr: So, what babysitting tricks you got, Mithra?

Mithra: I have a variety, but this one made them the happiest.

Akira: !?

Suddenly, Mithra grabbed me by the nape of my neck and lifted me up.

He then mercilessly launched me at the sky.

Akira: Aaaaaaaaah!!

I shot upwards, until gravity took my body back.

Screaming out of fear of falling, Mithra’s expression remained unchanged as he caught me like I was luggage.

Akira: Ow…!?

Bradley: Your throw is sloppy, as is your catch.

Owen: Wow, you didn’t even cast a protection spell.

Mitile: That’s dangerous! What if you didn’t catch the Master Sage!?

Mithra: Shut it, that wouldn’t happen.

Master Sage, that was fun, right?

Akira: F-For thrillseekers, maybe…uhm, could you let me down now…

Mithra: Satisfied already? I could curve my throw a bit, and make you somersault if you’d like.

Akira: No thank you, I’m okay!

Mithra: Haah, if you’re sure. You don’t have to hesitate.

Akira: Hah, I’m saved…

Murr: Your babysitting style is wild~!

Hey Mithra, will you play with the dolls now?

Mithra: Dolls?

Murr: Mmhmm. The ones on top of that bench.

Akira: Ah, those are…

Akira: Huh. There’s toys on this chair…they’re dolls made of wood. Did we bring something like this?

Oz: Those were here before. They were likely used by the former residents of this village.

Akira: Makes sense. Maybe the church was looking after children?

Murr: The dolls the humans who once lived here used to play with the siofra.

Mitile: Wait, really? How do you…

Murr: It piqued my interest, so I examined them and took them apart, to find a letter in one of them!

The paper’s pretty old and hard to read though.

He said, and with his other hand took out a crumpled old letter.

Murr: “To whomever is reading this.”

“I hide this letter in the Siofra’s beloved doll, for their divine protection should keep it safe…”

“I write this letter in hopes that someone will find it.”

“This village since ancient times has lived on the blessings granted by the Siofra, whom we give all our love to.”

“Unfortunately, the wicked outsiders have found out about them.”

“They invade our village left and right, and steal the Siofra from us by force.”

“If you are reading this. Please, save the Siofra.”

“Before their lives are extinguished by greed.”

Mitile & Akira: Ah…

Bradley & Owen: What?

Surprisingly, it was Bradley and Owen who spoke up.

Owen: Did you know? And that’s why you told the story?

Bradley: No way I knew. I just guessed right.

Still…

His words stopped there, and he nabbed the doll from Murr’s hand.

He immediately fiddled with the doll’s hands, and then pinched my cheek with them.

Akira: Owowowow…!?

Bradley: There’s no reason for you to be so down in the dumps now.

‘Cuz you’re gonna use those hands that cared for the siofra to send them off with a proper goodbye.

Akira: Bradley…

Murr: Ahaha! You’re good at playing with dolls, Bradley!

Mithra: Hey, I’m supposed to be teaching right now.

Bradley: Yeah yeah. Sorry for stealing your human siofra.

Mithra: Playing with dolls is for amateurs.

Instead…

He spread his hand on top of my head.

And in the next moment, put strength in his fingers and roughly began scrubbing my head.

Akira: Wa, woah, Mithra…! My hair…I’m, getting dizzy…!

Mithra: You don’t need dolls to have fun like this.

Owen: Oh no, the Master Sage’s head is going to rip off.

Murr: Your eyes are spinning, Master Sage!

Shylock: Since neither of us would ever play with Sif like this, they must have taken it as a novel experience.

It is a bit unrefined, but perhaps they saw it as Mithra’s way of showing affection.

Mithra: Affection? But I don’t have any of that.

Shylock: How about you try remembering a time when your heart was moved by someone else’s actions?

Maybe you will understand why Sif enjoys playing with you then.

Mithra: Like I said, there’s no affection…

Mitile: …What about my mother?

Mithra: Huh?

Mitile: How did you feel about Mother? You met her when you were a child, and learned magic from her, right?

Mithra: Tiletta, hm…

For her, I guess it’s this.

He took a finger and stuck it in the corner of his mouth.

Then he pulled to make a smile as if saying ‘cheese’.

Mithra: She wuld offen laff wiff a big mauth juss like dis…

Bradley: What wuzzat?

Akira: “She would often laugh with a big mouth just like this”…I think?

Murr: Hahaha! That’s funny, Mithra!

Mitile: M-Mother would really laugh like that?

Shylock: Her hearty laugh must’ve left an impression on him. She was a bright, extravagant, and beautiful witch after all.

I’m guessing that’s how you saw her too, Mithra.

Mithra: Really?

Mitile: Mother’s smile…wide open…

He timidly brought his fingers to the corners of his mouth and tried tugging them.

Mithra: You need to pull more. Like this.

Mitile: Awie!

Owen: Haha. Your mouth’s stretching sideways, sooo weird.

Bradley: Oh, the baby’s learning how to look after babies too?

Mitile: Hey, I’m not that little!

Though it was night, the mood was warm.

A sad farewell was coming soon, yet everything felt so at peace. My chest tightened.

I looked to the night sky to try and distract myself, and thought of those two.

Akira: (I hope they’re doing okay…)

(I wonder what they’re talking about now.)

Oz:

Arthur:

Oz: (The Sage said to talk until I felt okay…)

Arthur: (But the words just won’t come out…)

Oz & Arthur: (...Hm?)

Sif:

Pinch pinch.

Arthur: Lord Oz, Sif wants you to hold them.

Oz: Ah…no.

You should hold them.

Arthur: Hmhm…how about we take turns. Come, Sif.

Sif: Kyakya!

Oz & Arthur:

Arthur: Lord Oz. About all this…thank you for trying not to hurt my feelings.

Know that your kindness warms my heart.

Please let me apologize however, for making it sound like I was blaming you earlier.

Oz: You have nothing to apologize for.

Taking your feelings into consideration, it’s what I deserve.

I should have told you things sooner.

Arthur: Lord Oz…

Oz: Everyday I see how you’ve grown. It’s not that I don’t trust in you.

It’s just…

Arthur:

Oz: If someone you love dies for you, you would be heartbroken.

Arthur: That’s…

Chapter 9

Arthur: That’s inevitable. Not only me, but for everyone else too. I’m sure it’s the same for you as well.

…Is that why you always brought someone with me when I came here?

So that I wouldn’t become their parent?

Oz:

Arthur: You really are kind, Lord Oz.

Oz: …This is not kindness.

Arthur: Lord Oz. Could you take Sif please?

Oz: Sure. Come here.

Arthur: …Hehe.

Oz: Arthur?

Arthur: Pardon me. It fills my heart with joy to see you holding Sif.

I was only four when you took me in.

I’m sure I was the same height as Sif at that age.

Oz: …Yeah.

You were a bit taller though. Everything else is the same.

Arthur:

Spending time with Sif made me think about you and the days we spent together.

The day you picked me up. The days you taught me magic, or played with me.

And the day we parted…

Oz:

Arthur: I also hoped that you were having the same thoughts as I was…

Oz:

…Arthur, I also–

Oz & Arthur: …!

Arthur: Sif’s body is lighting up…is this…

Oz: …The time for farewell is fast approaching.

Arthur. Gather everyone.

Arthur: …n, Understood.

Oz:

Young fairy. No one can change your will.

However, if I may ask…

Called by Arthur, we returned to Sif right away.

Sif was in Oz’s arms. Seeing their body overflowing with a bright light, we understood what was happening.

Akira: It’s time to say goodbye…

Oz: If you wish to say something, the time is now.

When they noticed us, Sif got down from Oz. They had a happy smile on their face as they came towards us.

My eyes almost teared up seeing their arms reach out.

Mitile: Sif…

I had a lot of fun spending time with you. Thank you for being friends with me.

Akira: Being with you…seeing everyone with you, always filled my heart with warmth.

Thank you for such a wonderful time.

Bradley: One Year’s Meat, make sure to choose me as your pops.

Owen: It’s One Year’s Candy. Don’t get it wrong.

Shylock: Hmhm, my adorable and mischievous young master. Your hair is a mess again.

Shylock’s gentle hands tied up Sif’s hair.

Even without words, I could tell that he cared for Sif from the love that flowed from his fingers.

Murr inserted a single flower as the finish.

Murr: Bye bye, Sif! Have a safe journey!

Mithra: That was sooner than expected.

…Ah, right.

Like he just remembered something, he peered into Sif’s face.

Then, he used his finger to stretch his mouth wide.

Sif: Kyakya!

Mithra: Haha, you laughed.

Looks like I do have a knack for child rearing.

Oz and Arthur were silently watching everyone saying their goodbyes.

Before I knew it, the moon had risen high in the sky. Beneath it, red eyes reflected blue ones within.

Oz: Arthur. You know what happens next, don’t you?

Arthur: Yes. I am prepared.

Of course, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t going to be sad…

But I will be alright.

I must accept their destiny if I want to celebrate their birth as we send them off.

And Owen…thank you for telling me about this child.

Owen: Ugh, boring.

Arthur smiled at Owen’s words, and then looked straight into Oz’s eyes.

Arthur: I hope that I can give them a proper farewell, so as to not leave any regrets.

Those blue eyes of his were clearer than ever.

Though his heart may ache, there was a serene light in his eyes much like the clear blue sky.

Oz: A farewell, with no regrets…

In contrast, Oz’s red eyes slightly wavered.

Hope and denial blended in the lights and shadows of those sharp vibrant reds.

As he watched Arthur hold Sif and give his words of parting and thanks, Oz didn’t move an inch.

Akira: Oz, if there’s something you wish to say to Sif…

Oz: Then, one thing…

He walked towards Sif.

He stood by their side, watching over them for a moment, and slowly opened his mouth.

Oz: Sif. Arthur is fortunate to have met you.

In a blink, Sif’s body glowed brightly.

Light enveloped their body even further. When I looked again, I could hardly make out their shape anymore.

And then, Sif flew high into the sky where the moon was sitting.

They rose upwards in a straight line, and suddenly dropped downwards.

Watching them repeat the same movements, it was then that I realized.

Akira: Wait, could this be…

Arthur: The game I taught them…?

Sif returned, retying their hair by themself.

With soft and gentle movements.

After that, they stuck a finger to the corner of their mouth, and dragged it into a smile.

Mitile: Ahaha. It’s Mister Mithra.

They ruffled their hair into a mess, imitated when they were being read a book, jumped like when they were doing upsies.

All of these scenes were familiar.

Shylock: It looks like they’re going over the activities we’ve done with them.

It was like they were reminiscing over the love we gave them.

When they finished, Sif looked around at all of us.

Bradley: Oho. They’re having trouble on who to choose as their papa.

Owen: What if they can’t choose, and end up dying without picking anybody.

Murr: Hey, Sif. Who do you think gave you the most love out of everyone here?

With a light step, they glided towards Arthur.

Arthur: …!

Oz:

Kindly, happily, Sif ran circles around Arthur.

Mithra, Owen, & Bradley:

Shylock, Mitile, & Murr:

Oz & Akira:

Until they stopped, and flew elsewhere.

Mitile & Akira: Wha…

With a quicker pace, they were headed towards–

Oz: …nh.

The chest of the one who was silently watching over this moment.

Oz:

Mithra, Owen, & Bradley:

Sif: Kyahaha…!

Sif laughed as if saying he was their parent. Tiny arms wrapped Oz into a tight hug.

Mithra: Huh?

Bradley: Why Oz?

Owen: Are you crazy? Is this a mistake somehow?

Surprise won over objection, and the Northern wizards stared in shock.

Shylock however looked to be enjoying this.

Shylock: My, how unfortunate for me. I still had a wonderful time these past several days though.

Small young beings are so fleeting and precious.

Yet at times they can also see through to one’s true nature.

Oz himself was surprised.

Taken aback, he stared at the fairy in his arms.

Oz: Why…

Arthur walked to his side, and looked up at Oz.

Clear blue eyes like the sky reflected eyes of the morning sun, and gently smiled.

The sunlight of the blue skies, the morning light of daybreak…

Neither of those compared to the dazzling light of the memories flashing in his mind.

Arthur: Because the love I gave this child was the love you gave me.

I think Sif knew that too.

Oz: …gh…

The world’s strongest wizard, who has lived for an overwhelming amount of time. Even he could lose his words.

To one young seventeen-year-old.

Arthur:

Oz:

Urged by Arthur’s smile, Oz cast his eyes down on Sif again, still in his arms.

Slightly, but surely, those eyes of his wavered.

Arthur: Now, Lord Oz. Your wish.

Oz:

I…
