Akira: Riquet!

Oz: Happy…

Arthur & Cain: Birthday~!!

Riquet: Thank you so much!

Hehe. It makes me happy to hear it no matter how many times it’s said. 

Thank you everyone for preparing such a nice surprise for me. 

Cain: Of course. It’s our treasured friend’s special day.

Arthur: Tonight we have a fun time for you planned at this slumber party!

Master Oz, the opening remarks please.  

Oz: Sure. 

We will now hold the “Karuta Tournament: Riquet’s Birthday Edition”.

Arthur, Cain, & Akira: Woo~!!

Riquet: Karuta…that’s a card game from your world, Master Sage. 

I remember playing it together with everyone in the manor. 

Arthur: Indeed. But tonight, we’ve made it special to celebrate your birthday.

Cain: We call it “What We Like About Riquet Karuta”!

The cards all have poems we wrote on what we like about you. 

Riquet: What you like about me…!

Where are these cards? I must see them! 

Oz: Settle down. We have to explain the rules. 

Akira: Heehee. I’ll keep it short so be patient a little longer. 

Normally karuta is a game where you’re supposed to find the torifuda card with an image that matches what’s written on the yomifuda card…

This time however we made it so that the yomifuda card and the torifuda card both have the same poem written on them.

Cain: Basically, whatever words you hear read aloud are the words on the card you gotta find. 

Arthur: You’re always working hard to improve your reading and writing. 

So we thought up this game for you to see the results of your diligence while having fun. 

Riquet: Wow…! This is so thoughtful of you all to prepare this just for me. 

Thank you. You’ve already made me so happy, I’m excited to see what everyone has written! 

Arthur: Then let me prepare the cards. Pernoctant Nixzo.

Arthur recited his spell, and the karuta cards were perfectly aligned in a row atop the carpet. 

As he examined the cards from above, Riquet let out a breath in awe. 

Riquet: There’s…this many things you like about me…

Akira: (Riquet looks overjoyed. I’m glad we made these cards.)

Alright everyone! It’s time to start the karuta tournament!

Please sit in a spot where it’ll be easy for you to take a card. I’ll be in charge of reading the yomifuda cards. 

The torifuda cards the Central Wizards get to play with are written in the letters of this world, while the yomifuda cards I read are written in my language. This way, we can all have fun. 

Riquet: Don’t hold back, everyone! Let’s make it a fair game!

Cain: Yeah! 

Arthur: Of course!

Oz: Very well.

Akira: Okay, here we go!

[A New Morning with Riquet] Part 2

Akira: Our first card is…ahem!

“Lunchtime~/”

Riquet: Lunch, time…

Cain: L, L, L…where is it…?

Arthur: I don’t see it anywhere…

Oz: …

The three young wizards leaned their bodies forward, searching for the right card.

Though he didn’t move, Oz was also participating in the game by looking with his eyes instead. 

Akira: “With his mouth wide open~/ Is Riquet eating an omelette~”

Riquet: …What?

Cain: Got it!

Arthur: Wow, good going Cain. You were fast!

Akira: Then Cain wins the first card! …Hm?

When I turned my eyes over to Riquet, his cheeks were puffed up into a pout, finger pointed at the card Cain won. 

Riquet: Cain! You wrote that card, didn’t you?

Cain: Yeah, you guessed right. 

Riquet: “With his mouth wide open, is Riquet eating an omelette”...

That disgraceful sight is what you like about me?

Cain: Hahaha, ‘course it is. You’re so cute I can’t help it.

Akira: It’s adorable to see you stuff your cheeks with food. 

Arthur: Yes. Whenever I see you deliciously enjoying your meals, I can feel my fatigue just wash away. 

Oz: It’s as if food feeds your heart too. 

Riquet: Hmph…well if you say that…

I guess I will let it slide. It comes from your love for me, so I will accept it graciously. 

Akira: Hehe. Now then, I’ll go ahead and read the second card. 

(....Oh, I wrote this one.)

“Laughter, tears~/ It’s a lot but~/”

Riquet: Laughter…

Arthur: Tears…

Akira: “Riquet still tries to experience the whole world~”

Riquet: ! Got it!

Cain: Wow! Nice one Riquet!

Arthur: You did it!

Oz: Good job.

Riquet: Ehehe. I did my best!

Happily picking up the card, he smiles brightly towards me. 

Riquet: Did you write this one, Master Sage?

Akira: ! That’s right, how did you know?

Riquet: …I can’t put it into words very well.

But if I were to write what I liked about you…

I think I would write the same thing.

Akira: …!

(Riquet…so that’s what you think of me.)

Just as we have things we love about Riquet that we could endlessly write…

Riquet has been on a daily basis, telling us in words and in feelings, what he loves about us. 

Akira: (That shows how much Riquet pays attention to us.)

Thank you, Riquet. To hear you say that and win the card makes me happy. 

Riquet: Heehee.

Master Sage, I’ll get the next one too, so if you could please!

Akira: Yes! The third card is…

[A New Morning with Riquet] Part 3

Akira: Mn…it’s morning?

Yawn…this room is…

When I opened my eyes in a daze, I realized I was laying on the carpet of Riquet’s room. 

Riquet laid next to me asleep, and I remembered the events of last night.

Akira: (Right. We were having a blast playing karuta…)

(We ended our game, but Riquet and I wanted to chat afterwards, and then we fell asleep like that…)

(I don’t think I could carry him to his bed without waking him, so I might as well cover him in a blanket.)

I got up to get a blanket, and then paused. 

Akira: (Oh, wait…Riquet is an early riser, so it’s actually rare that I get to see his sleeping face.)

He was like Sleeping Beauty with his hands resting over his chest and sound asleep. 

As I was thinking about what sort of dreams he must be having behind those softly closed eyelids…

They suddenly opened wide. 

Akira: Woah!?

Riquet: M-Master Sage!?

Wh-what’s wrong? Is it an enemy attack?

Akira: N-No! Everything’s ok!!

I’m sorry. I was just surprised by your eyes suddenly opening when I thought you were asleep…!

Riquet: …Oh, so that’s it? I’m glad you’re okay. 

He let out a sigh of relief.

And proceeded to stretch his back.

In just seconds it looked like he already shook off any sleepiness and was bathing in the morning sunlight. 

Riquet: I follow a righteous lifestyle, so I naturally wake up in the morning. 

I mustn’t miss out on my morning prayers, as God is always watching over me. 

Akira: (What a good kid…)

But…

Riquet: Yawn…

Riquet & Akira: !

A cute yawn slipped out from Riquet’s small mouth. He hurriedly covered his mouth with his fingers. 

Riquet: …Excuse me. I guess I am still a little sleepy…

His cheeks flushed red with embarrassment, a bashful look on his face. 

It was a cute smile fitting for someone his age. As I feel my heart warm from that smile, I giggle. 

Akira: (Riquet, who always tries his hardest, always stays clearheaded, and is always adorable…)

(I hope that he can continue to find more things he likes.)

Akira: (Yawwwn…I wonder what’s for breakfast?)

(Hm? That’s…)

Riquet: Nom. Munch…munch…

Akira: (It’s Riquet. Ahaha, he’s having a good time eating that omelette.)

(I don’t want to disturb him. Where should I sit…)

Riquet: …Ah, Master Sage! Good morning.

If you’re about to eat breakfast, then please have a seat next to me. We can eat together.

Akira: Thank you Riquet. Well then, since you offered…

Riquet: Oh! Mirror…mirror…

Mm, mn…okay.

Akira: Huh? What’s up? Why’d you check your face with a hand mirror?

Riquet: Ah, well…recently, I was in class with the other Central wizards while there was still sauce on my face. 

Prince Arthur and the others kindly reassured me it was alright, but I was so embarrassed…

So, in order to not make the same mistake again, I’ve been keeping this hand mirror with me to check.

Akira: I see. So that’s why, huh.
